I used to drink here years and years ago - has always been a good boozer, good atmosphere, good food, and a large beer garden. dont get that end of town as much these days - def worth a visit. Hot_Stuff - 10 Oct 2008 16:23
The longest walk away from the general direction of the crawl, but pleasant enough via the pedestrianised New Walk, rather than London Rd. An Everards house, Tiger, Beacon, Sunchaser, Original, also Old Rosie on handpump, a friendly welcome at the bar. Bright conservatory to left, dark wood bar, plenty of seating, banquettes in big bay windows at front, pool table, dartboard & plasma in separate room to rt which is beyond a smaller, interim bar. Check out the life-size Blues Brothers – Jake & Elwood are reclining in the courtyard to rear, beyond this a large well tended lawn with picnic sets. Not sure about the table formed of a coffin opposite the bar – quite out of keeping with the pub & slightly disconcerting. trainman - 5 May 2008 11:19
I left the waking horror that is the Stoneycroft Hotel just off London Rd, desperately seeking sanctuary in a sympathetic hostelry. Happily, I didn't have to walk for long - about 4 minutes. The Old Horse is a large yet homely 'come-one-come-all' boozer with a good range of beers (including Everard's Sunchaser - in December?!) and a big menu. The food isn't as impressive as the beer, and one of our party had to send his inedible chicken back, but it's serviceable pub grub. (If you want haute cuisine, there are about 10,000 curry houses in Leicester vying for your custom.) A friendly, vibrant atmosphere, very good ales and no holds barred with the Christmas decorations - just the job to stave off the terrors of staying at a cross between Bates Motel and The Overlook (off of The Shining). tommarto - 12 Dec 2007 17:44
A lot of effort has gone into making this pub an attractive place for a pint or two or indeed whatever takes your fancy. It has the largest pot and jug collection that I have come across and all the beams are festooned with them. If you find this fascinating, then take a look outside. There is an extensive “real” beer garden and to reach it one has to pass through a small courtyard featuring two bizarre Blues Brother type model characters either side of a real beer engine complete with a “Tiger” badge on the handle but, sadly dispensing only a continual stream of water. Alongside there is a metal frog trio of musicians. Hanging baskets and tubs rings the whole area. Superb. Alerover - 17 Jul 2007 14:25
