| I think that the 'anti Dermot' comments on here are a little precious. This place was like the Marie Celeste for 5 years before the Mc Canns rolled into town. Yes, they do run a tight ship. I got a friendly ticking off for going mental when my fotball team scored and have no problem with this as Dermot was only communicating correctly that it isn't that sort of pub. The Adelaide is one of the few pubs that you can guarantee is totally free of PBFS (Professional Bar Fly Scum) and this is all credit to the Land Lord. The Mc Canns can't do enough for us, our friends and families in order to make us feel welcome. It speaks volumes that I have seen at least 3 pilgrimages from East and North London from Dermots old regulars at the Cheshire Cheese in Holburn. They are rightly mourning the loss of a highly talented publican and friendly charachter. The Cheshire cheese has by the way died on its arse since 'The Dermot factor' evaporated. As well as being a great host, Dermot has also bent over backwards to support philanthropic endeavours at the pub and helped to raise over £500 for a friend of ours with cancer. He has a real pride in his establishment, if this pride comes across to some people as occasional tardiness then so be it. My wife and I have never found Dermot, Vera, Marianna or the team to be anthing less than totally hospitable, warm and welcoming in a manner that goes way beyond the call of duty. My best ever local by a long chalk and somewhere where I feel far too comfy! monkwearmouth - 6 Sep 2008 17:42 |
| I have also witnessed Dermot being a little aggressive to people re drinking outside - apparently he has some stroppy neighbours who complain. A very nice pub with a sensible middle aged clientele. Food good and fresh if a little unexciting. 1_hot_totty - 29 Aug 2008 18:22 |
| I tend to agree with the comments from Froosch when it comes to the landlords behaviour. I've personally always found him the charming host - very friendly, welcoming, helpful etc etc. However..... I was in the beer garden a couple of Friday evenings ago and it was quite crowded (why was there only lighting around the smoking area and not beyond?) and everyone was enjoying a very relaxed and quiet night. Noise levels were very low with never a raised voice in the time I was there (8.00 til 11pm). At 10.50, the landlord was collecting glasses from the beer garden and being his usual self asking how everyone was etc then without warning he suddenly rushed to a table of about six or seven people and very agressively told them to "keep the noise down" or they would have to leave - they and everyone else were totally stunned. They all sat motionless in a state of shock and had been humilated for no reason whatsoever. It ruined their evening, that of my wife and I and many others. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. The landlord went back indoors and most people drank up and left. On us leaving, he was then the charming host again and invited us back as if nothing had happened. From what both myself and Froosch have witnessed, he does appear to be a bit Jekyll and Hyde. mr_toon - 3 Aug 2008 17:49 |
| You say the new man runs a tight ship and that the Adelaide is all the better for it? Well I will just have to respect that. All I can say is that on the one occasion I visited since he took over his behaviour was completely unacceptable. You do not smack patrons in the back of the head. You can cut them off or you can ask them to leave (neither of which I believe would've been appopriate as the chap wasn't alone in berating the ref) but you do not hit them. | couldn't disagree with froosh more, the adelaide is a great pub since Dermot took control, he takes no messing, which is as it should be, and keeps a great clean and friendly house, anyone remember the place before he took over? it was bloody terrible. dannysboy - 20 Jun 2008 18:04 |
