user reviews of County Arms, Winchester
please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
| Visited on way back from train station, had a decent pint of IPA that was a good temperature and a very good price. Toilets etc all great as well and the pub was very clean. We both ate, and although nothing special the food was hot, well presented but a bit bland. Good value for food as well. Would go back for a Ruddles when i am back in Winchester. sebby20 - 16 Sep 2011 12:35 |
| Opposite the pub situated on the side of the original Hillier's Nursery (before Alan Tichmarsh) you will find 'Home Nursery Green' described as a "mini Kew Garden on our doorstep". In 1874 Edwin Hillier bought a parcel of land adjoining the County Gaol and this was called the Home Nursery or No. 1 as it became known. The Nursery stretched all the way down to Greenhill Road and covered 14.5 acres. Specimen trees were planted around the site and many of them are still there dating back back to those early beginnings. It is believed that a seedling of the Andalusian Oak is growing in the gardens on Buckingham Palace. The area was sold off slowly for housing. When Nursery Gardens was created in 1979, the half-acre behind the existing garden centre was planted as a community open space and at least 13 of the original specimen trees. Many of the gardens near by have protected trees. The variety and diversity found in this small area is something worth visiting. The County Arms was the second stop of a 'pub crawl' by my Brother and I. it's a stiff climb up the hill from the Station. The Hampshire County Hospital which is near by moved up the hill from the City in 1861 when sites in the town centre proved problematic and Florence Nightingale advised on the building. The pub dates from this period and has been recently refurbished, this Greene King pub follows the contours of the land and descends from the entrance down through a number of levels to a large eating area at the bottom. Carlsberg £1.99 Ruddles £2.15 Fosters £2.80, with IPA on hand pump which the bar man promptly changed the barrel over without us asking as he thought it was at its end and we found it in fine form. Quiz night (Thursdays), Live music (Fridays), All major sporting events shown on nine screens (count em!), including 4 private booths. Function room available., Jukebox, Pool table, Dartboard, Fruit machines, Quiz machines (itbox * 2), Bar billiards. Real ale, Cocktails. Outside seating in the form of two areas, one non-smoking, Car park, Wireless internet access(provided by The Cloud). They also have an ATM machine (£1.50 charge) should you run out of cash. Food served from 11am til 9pm all day everyday!, Sunday roast. The menu is extensive and too large to list, so link to this for details anf offers: http://www.gkpubs.co.uk/uploads/Mainstream-External-Menu-HS-PB3.pdf This is a good 'locals' pub and worth a visit if you start a pub crawl at the top of Town and want to survey the journey ahead through the City.
