| I`m going to be perfectly honest and concede that any cocktail bar is facing an uphill struggle when it comes to me. Firstly, I simply don’t like cocktails – for me an alcoholic drink belongs in a pint glass and should not come with its own umbrella. Secondly, “cocktail bars” in my experience are hellish nightmares that Satan himself usually has had a personal hand in designing: all swanky wanky surfaces, overloud music, expensive non-cocktail booze and pounce staff who have one eye glued permanently to their own reflection in the nearest mirror. However, compared to other bars of this nature, Imagine isnt actually that bad at all. According to the wife (more predisposed to the whole experience) the range of cocktails is pretty extensive and relatively cheap (although littered with the usual graphically sexual titles – how anyone can ingest something with a name such as “Bent roughly over the kitchen table” is beyond me). For none cocktail drinkers the options are naturally limited and slightly dear, but on both fronts not as shocking as one might expect. The interior too is pretty easy on the eye, still superficial and glistening, yet with a good wooden floor and some nice earthy touches. Most commendable of all there doesn’t appear to be a self-loving pounce amongst the staff, in fact they are all extremely friendly without being sycophants. As a pint man though I still cant give Imagine more than a respectable 6/10, even though someone more cocktail inclined might lean towards a 7 or an 8. However, for me the limitations in booze and style doesn’t make Imagine anything other than a temporary (and wife pleasing) stop off before better places are taken in later in the night. pgazz - 30 Apr 2005 11:54 |
