| Looks to be all change at the Maxwell. The landlady Anne has (I gather,) bought the pub from the Spirit group and so now really is the guvnor! New range of beers and £ ales on tap. Lets hope all goes well for her in a brave new world of owner management Norealaleinorpington - 11 Sep 2007 10:12 |
| Top pub and certainly not typical of the grot you normally find near a station. Only drawback is a lack of decent ale. They usually have Green King IPA (passable,) but have now moved away from a choice of 2 or 3 that they had a while back. So come on Anne get some decent beer in! Food is very good value. | Went in there 2 years back or so, and was alright but wasn't blown away by any aspect it. Then again it was just after opening so explains why it was empty. No idea what it's like at night, but I've no inclination to really try it now. Certainly wouldn't bother walking there from Olaves every lunchtime ;) (only joking fellas) man_of_kent - 19 Jun 2006 14:24 |
| This pub was our frequent haunt until it became a 21s only, we came in here many a time for lunch and a pint. It was never too busy and the staff were always friendly and helpful. Good ales on tap but no more Speckled Hen which is a personal favorite of mine. Tubes - 1 Jun 2006 18:25 |
| In the same breath that God decreed Jodie Marsh’s brain should be no bigger that pinhead, He also let it be so that the closer a pub is to a railway station, the greater the content of shit per square yard. No idea why – I`ve always assumed it had something to do with getting back at Satan, who after all has to be a major shareholder in Railtrack or whatever privatised nightmare we currently live under. Most railway pubs are as a consequence simply pants: overpriced dives serving pre-heated midget piss in surroundings that veer towards the disused abattoir look. They survive on the laziness of people like yours truly, who cannot be arsed to walk too far for a tipple after a fitful connection journey and duly hand over enough cash to keep these festering crapholes in business. It is therefore difficult to be too harsh on any pub that breaks this stereotype, which the Maxwell certainly does. Located within a two min walk of Orpington’s platforms, the Max serves a reasonable range of well kept lagers and ales at affordable (and sometimes dirt cheap) prices. The interior is a moderately sized and clean affair, but extremely bland, with a range of wooden fittings and a solid floor that grace far too many similar pubs across the country. I cannot fault the staff nor the well priced, if unoriginal menu, and for the most part the clientele are fairly pleasant, if as sedate as a horse with an arse full of tranquillisers. As anyone will notice, I`m not exactly gushing about the Max and really a short summary would describe it as a bit non-descript. However, compared to most railway pubs it’s an Eden and in general it does the job, if without much flair. 6/10. pgazz - 11 Apr 2006 17:07 |
