One of the finest pubs in the Greater Manchester area. The beer is uniformly excellent, and the choice is outstanding. In fact, there's so much choice it's like an all-year-round beer festival. The staff are friendly and frequently funny. The pub is wonderfully Victorian both inside and out and is a joy to sit in.

The only significant downside is the unfortunate placement of the M60 motorway right at the back of the pub, which makes sitting in the cobbled area/pub 'garden' outside a noisy and sometimes smelly affair. This is a shame as the outside area is pleasant otherwise, with lovely views of Stockport's famous viaduct.

The Crown is surely worth more than the 6.1 it's currently rated at. It sets the standard for beer in Stockport and most of the North West. This soft southern jessie gives it a 9.

I would second the thanks to The Cown for the Spitting Feathers trip, it will take some beating.

Just a note the say thank you to the Crown for organising a great day out! We had a great time on the Spitting Feathers brewery trip. It was very interesting to see where some of the beers that we like so much actually come from. It was a very enjoyable day with some very good Spitting Feathers beers, sausages and ribs!!! A trip to two pubs in Chester (reviews on their own sites) and then back to the Crown for a few more beers, the Pictish was lovely last night, thanks again.

Can I have some clarification regarding this pub please? Is it open or closed down? I keep getting mixed messages with conflicting views as to it being open or shut. Thanks

Last time I was in Stockport this was going to be my first pub before going to The Crown and then The Magnet. Unfortunately it was shut, I hadn't realised that it probably opens at teatime. I got there for about 3.30pm.
I SHALL RETURN!!

First time visitor to the Magnet and left with mixed feelings about the place.

Good points: A reasonable selection of ales at affordable prices. A pint of Abbeydale Smoked Porter was sampled and enjoyed. Service was swift and polite, the young fellow behind the bar appearing enthusiastic about the beer on offer.

Bad points: Zero atmosphere, tired decor and uncomfortable seating. The pub could have been warmer, a distinct chill permeated the building.

I feel this establishment is a work in progress, a visit sometime in the future may change my opinion.

Tried again following chad`s comment on his wife going in on her own I often go out alone before meeting friends and find it very difficult finding pubs that I am comfortable in, the magnet is NOT one of them. Never again

Quite simply one of the best pubs in Greater Manchester, never mind Stockport. Sure, the decor isn't going to win prizes, but I think the range and quality of the beer speaks for itself - cellar lady Sarah is simply one of the best in the region. The pub has a great atmosphere, friendly regulars and absolutely wonderful staff. The pool table is only 50p and the beer prices (both draft and bottled) are incredibly reasonable.

A requirement for any pub crawl in Stockport - it often features as a starting point for our Manchester trips. If only Heaton Norris station still existed!

I cannot understand how you can dislike this pub. Very friendly landlord and customers. Good value food and beer and a good old fashioned pub.

I just cant understand why this pub has this status as being "good". Very very average. Not a patch on the magnet and the crown.

Who the f**k suggested this mediocre boozer for the top twenty.

Get a grip for crying out loud. The Pineapple is a bog standard Robinsons house that is pleasant enough, ale drinkable but nothing special. Some folk are easily pleased.

RANT OVER!!

Not having frequented the Railway for nearly three years, i was intrigued to see wether there had been many changes since my last visit, having heard rumours from other local imbibers.

My fears were imaginary though, the pub is exactly the same, a warm and comfortable alehouse with an impressive beer collection. Two Belgian beers were consumed and enjoyed, both at under £3 each. Very good value compared to the excessive prices charged in the centre of Manchester.

Did notice that they weren't stocking the full range of Porter ales. A temporary blip no doubt.

Haven't had a bad pint in here for ages, but it desperately needs a refurb! There is a new sign outside, though, so hopefully a sign of things to come.

Called in here for my first time last night, after being reccomended by several people. Was impressed by the variety of the beer on offer. Oldie worldy feel to the place with wooden beams. Next time I visit the place I think I'll go in the afternoon to fully appreciate the place.

The elizabethan is a great place to go, whether its lunch with the girls or a night out at the weekends. there is no trouble as now over 21's. i must say i love the new refurb and its now my regular. Thanks J.W.Lees

Big pub set back from leafy Heaton Moor Road. I have no idea what it was like pre-J.W. Lees refit, but it now feels rather bland, like one of the cleaner Wetherspoons' pubs. I can only assume the scattering of low-slung leather sofas is an attempt to seduce the post-office professional crowd and, judging by the clientele on a recent Thursday evening, it appears to be working. For me, this is nothing special at all, but is probably worth stopping by if in the area for the Lees cask ales, all of which are cheaper than you'd expect for a pub of this type (£2.30ish/pint). 6/10.

I have been aware of the Elizabethan for a long time but never actually been in it. I had heard that it had been a bit run down for some time though. I finally visited last week on a Friday evening with some friends for some food and drinks. The pub has had a major refit and had big money spent on it. The internal decor and fitments are now in the style of typical wetherspoons. The pub is a JW Lees pub and has an extensive menu.

It all looked very promising indeed however having eaten and taken into account the comments from my friends,i would say that the menu looks promising but the food was very average and the final bill represented poor value for money.

Rather disappointing given the refit and i would suggest that the landlord does some major work on putting this right as this pub could really fly if it has high quality food and also a good selection of Real Ales.
