Decent drinks but that's about it. Overly pretentious, miserable staff (minus a couple of the younger ones) and an unwelcoming atmosphere.

Squarely aimed at ale and cider drinkers, does everything it should.

If you are in Southsea and DON'T visit this pub, then you're missing out! I'm a cider drinker so can't comment on the real ales, but the choice (of both) is incredible! I'm not local to the area, but every time I've visited this pub, I've been made to feel at home. Love it!

Amg. Yes the posts were made before the last march, but its not the first time the EDL had been in, and again at the request of the Police. There was no obligation for the landlady to comply, but when requested by the Police to help stop a breach of the peace we, as regulars believe she was in order to help. They will NOT be returning to the pub. This is the second time we have posted to let people know that we are a friendly pub, can you see a pattern emerging. I again urge all to come and see for yourselves.

Poplarkin - there was no obligation on the landlady to agree to the Police's request. Consider the posts below, made well before the demo in question and to all appearances by unconnected individuals. See a.pattern emerging? Drunken, loud, abusive racists???

Speaking as a regular of over10 years, I felt compelled to answer the comments I have read regarding my local.
This establishment does not support the EDL. The landlady was asked by the Police to allow them to meet in the pub, to ensure they were all in one place.
As for the Landladies' children being supporters, this is blatantly not true.
It is, and always has been a family friendly and we would welcome the previous commentators to pop in and see for themselves .

awesome brewhouse, brew 8 beers, The company is now opening new pub in dorchester on the eldridge pope site.

jbs1 - they do serve breakfast! Been in here for coffee (very nice and a quid) plus the odd pint. Absolute hats off to this place, looks great, smells lovely and malty some days. The variety of beers is very good. Prices good, around £3 to £3-50 for their own brews, don't know about lagers and bottles. The food menu looks really good, but I haven't eaten there yet. From what I have seen on other tables it looks good. You can have a breakfast including tea or coffee for a fiver, comparable to Wetherspoons, but I would bet it's a whole lot better, ingredients-wise. Saturday lunchtimes fairly busy, haven't been in the evenings so not sure how it's doing then, but I hope it prospers as it's offering something different. Well worth a visit.

Visited this pub on 8th June 2013 and found that it was no longer a Wetherspoons pub but a brewhouse brewing its own beers. Did not stay as I was looking for a breakfast.

Seemed very above average when I went in, admittedly when they were gearing up to a festival

Safe choice in this densely populated part of Portsmouth. Early on a Friday evening it was still quite busy. Minimal seating outside.

This pub is a bit better than the rest, but it is wetherspoons, so you get quiet all the time, the only noise you hear are people talking.

For your information I am not sad neither I am a "dinoasur."

If you want to comment keep clear of personal abuse.

There have been problems with badly behaved children in this pub before. Nothing changes. My comments reflect opinions shared by many that have used this pub but don't anymore.
11 Jan 2014 20:29
What a dinosaur you are! Are you anti children ? Sure, there are some kids out there that are boisterous but I know that pub has dealt with issues previously. I'm sure they dealt with it on the day! Did you stay for the conclusion? Go home you sad person!

This is the worst pub I have been in for a long long time. Entered to find the bar taken over by a bunch of dead beats with kids running riot and the bar staff unable to do anything they said because the manager wasn't answering his phone. Kids roller skating and others bringing in fish and chips from the chip shop across the road. Most of the pubs in Paulsgrove (an adjoining areas) have closed down because of trouble caused by customers. This place is heading the same way.

Situated opposite the cathederal this pub claims to be the oldest in Portsmouth, we visited on a Saturday evening and found it to be warm and welcoming with a decent selection of real ale (think had 5 on offer) tried the "invincible" beer which was very good.

We had three different things off the menu which were all very good, will be doing this pub again when in the area.

We called in whilst filling in time waiting for our ferry to Santander. Bar maid ignored us for quite a while whilst she fumbled with her magnetic whatsit and failed to open the till. When the first beer arrived, it was changed without a quibble. Ok, I'll try another. Oops, just running out. Third time lucky. We say in the attractive covered back garden and watched a very elderly lady in a scarlet tight fitting cat suit talking to the camp 'landlord'(?) The food others were eating looked good but the staffing had a strange feel about it.

A quite amazing place for a first visit...

A pint of London Pride will set you back 3.90 which you may consider to be expensive...

However a HALF of the same London Pride will cost you 2.10!

When politely questioned about the expensive halves the landlady seemed totally unconcerned too, as if she was running a champagne bar in Knightsbridge or similar.

You wouldn't mind so much if it was a stand out boozer, but it is only slightly better than average perhaps...the lunch menu for dogs being the only thing vaguely special.

Not a bad place aside from the bonkers prices, but I won't be going back in a hurry unless I get a hungry dog with expensive tastes.
