One of the best pubs on our pub crawl. 6 ales and stowford for the wife. Only downside is that they dont do food.

Great real ale pub with plenty of character. Good selection of pumps. Enjoyed my visit.

Friendly, attractive pub with excellent beer, only slightly let down by the collection of annoying games machines and TV.

Excellent Free House with a superb choice of local ales. Interesting, quirky interior and the art work in the gents is well worth a look. A contender for the best pub in Portsmouth.

Went in on a busy Sunday lunchtime, listened to a very accomplished Jazz trio with a great female singer, am told this happens once a month in here. Had a couple of decent pints of Suthwick Skew bitter. Good choice of ales as befits a free house, and unusually, no Guinness. Recommended if you're having a beer-spotter kind of day and want to try lots of different ales.

I can echo the sentiment of the previous commentator in that on a recent Saturday lunchtime visit, my friend and I were made to feel most welcome. There was a gaggle of ladies all busying themselves in the backgrond very industriously - although only a handful of punters were in by noon I can only assume this indicates trade becomes more brisk. And so it might, for at the Barley Mow, besides a sense of homely congeniality and local grittiness, one can find a series of rather well-attenuated ales! I believe all were local on my visit, and the halves sampled were on fine fettle. Like many of its nearby counterparts, the pub made me feel slightly peeved - nay guilty - about having to leave it after such a short stay. But it's better to love and leave a pub than loath and leave it.

This really provided a splendid pick-us-up following a decent brekkie at Lou-Lou's in the centre. Good work folks, and don't ever think you need to change.

Great pub with a charming landlady, she made us bunch of srangers very welcome. beer also on top form

More expensive and quieter than the nearby Hole-in-the-Wall, but still a good pub and usually has a dark beer in it's range(Oakleaf Stoker's Stout on my visit). First pub on a great crawl back to the train station( Hole-in-the-Wall, King St Tavern, Eldon Arse, White Swan).

I went into the Spice Island after browsing through some menu's in the guesthouse I was staying at. I initially wanted to go there because of the location (camber dock, overlooking the harbour).

Really friendly staff, good food and good ale (Old Speckled Hen). Well done Spice Island. We will come back in the summer.

If the previous reviewer believes that there is no processed food in this place then I am seriously worried about the state of this country. This place is dire- spacious and cold hearted, there is little to offer here. Usual british pub chipped and flaking walls and poor quality furniture- beer uninspiring and run by kids. Best off staying indoors.

I came down from Surrey with my family to visit the Spice Island Inn after a friend recommended it too me. Fantastic! My husband and I as well as our children were offered a lovely window seat, The kids looked at the various ferries and ships going by which kept them entertained for ages! Food was great, especially the fish and chips, and how refreshing to see a childrens menu which DOES'NT consist of chicken nuggets and other processed nightmares! Excellent service, In fact the waitress even took the time to give us directions to Gunwharf which is a modern shopping complex just across the water. We will definantly be going back when we next visit portsmouth. ps, If you are visiting portsmouth, there is a local ferry that goes to a place across the water called gosport, don't go there, very boring!!

Lively mock Tudor pub. I was disappointed that you couldn't order a Navy Rum in a pub named after Admiral Anson, who basically founded the Royal Navy as we know it (introduced the first navy uniform, for example). Was told that Greene King, the proprietors wouldn't allow any drink to be sold which they hadn't supplied, and navy rum wasn't on their list.
Sort it out Greene King, you useless Bury St Edmunds landlubbers. This is not the spirit that built an empire. Rule the waves? Couldn't run a piss up in a navy pub.

Much better since the change of management and the refurbishment. Both a while ago now. The bitter is still good and the food is the standard Greene King menu.

Not sure if Greene King own the place but it was only GK IPA and Speckled Hen on offer, quite a lively fun atmosphere though for a sat nite with a decent jukebox. 6/10

Congratulations Karen on your brilliant debut on national television. You looked so poised and nerveless as you stated your case so eloquently and put across your points. You looked as if you belonged on TV.Suzannah was my favourite but not any more! They should give you a job

Karen, Wonderful!!!! David and ... murdoc? This is fantastic news, hope all goes well with the final ruling. Monopolies are bad for us and making so many millions when we are all skint, pubs are suffering with a smoking ban and now lack of money to go out and it must be a struggle fro you to keep going. I can't stand football personally but hate to see pubs close because we'd all loose some friends if we didn't see them regularly for a night out. Well done to you for your efforts. Fantastic!!

Well Done Karen and your legal team, you stood by your principles and I hope and pray the result later this year is positive for you. I feel this will be a great year for Pubs especially with the demise of some of the Pubco's too - Next time I visit the clan in Pompey will pop in for a pint or two.
