I wandered in here to check out the interior (another one listed by CAMRA for historic interiors etc). Very unusual, with the serving area being in the main "hallway" as you walk into the pub. A public bar and smoke room are off to the sides and accessed by serving hatches:-the smoke room has a fireplace and is delightful. Only the seat furnishings ( and the dreaded carpet) detract a little from what is otherwise a great pub. Friendly service, appears to welcome locals, students and visitors alike. I really liked this pub.

Tried a pint of Landlord (£2.50),,,.Don't know if this a general Landlord fault -but it was flat as a southern 'beer of the month' within 5 minutes!...Good local with a friendly atmosphere in a very welcoming traditonal (1930's) pub.

This is always a must as we are always made welcome. Handy for caravanning visitors to pop into when going out in the town, and calling back in for a nightcap. Good choice of real ales. Like the layout. Enjoyed a seasonal Salamander and a Rudgate stout on my last visit this time.

This has got to be one of the most quirky pubs in the UK, not only is it supposedly the highest Pub in England, it's about 10 miles from all other civilisation, apart from that, don't be surprised to see sheep and ducklings wandering about in the bar and a Landlady who makes Chubby Brown sound like a playschool teacher. A nice pint is served though and after an overnight stay the place kind of grows on you. (remember to take your ear plugs if easily offended)

Awesome souroundings! Excellent "trenchers" & real ale to die for. A real pleasure. Worth the hike out.
6 May 2008 16:07
Used to travel up from outside Richmond to visit this place. I loved its remoteness, it's warmth and charm.
Sadly moved away to Dorset for work. Always said i'd visited the Pub whenever i come up to visit Family.
taken me 20 years to get back to the pub, but i wasn't disapointed, it still has that certain something. Great place, warm, friendly, fine food with Theakstons and Black sheep the stuff i was weaned on!
you can't get better than this!

A very nice public house. The lager was certainly cheap enough; well it should be, because it tasted like the manageress had urinated in it.

I was in this establishment with my wife who had some kind of pie and chips to eat. This is because she is a pie eater and has the belly to prove it. She said that the food was "cooked" in a mircoware oven and pot noodles and lard would have tasted better. She sends her compliments to the microwave button presser.

On balance the highlight of my visit that I enjoyed the most was the smell of the toilets. Some peasant had deposited a pile of excetia on one of the toilet seats.

My compliments to mine hosts Monika and Colin.

Hey Johnny 333, I'm not that old, I just enjoy a few pints of Mild!
As you say, it's a bit quiet.

Took notice of mikeupd report on the Angel,it is actually a nice pub his comments suggest he is really a very old man looking for a cheap pint of mild.A bit of entertainment would not go amiss

From the outside, this pub may not look particularly invititing but it is DEFINTELY worth a visit. A great choice of well kept ales, imported beers and good value food. When visiting York, I usually arrive by train and this pub is just a five minute walk from the station. Don't miss it.
15 May 2008 13:20
One of the biggest variety of ales/ciders available out of any pub i've ever visited. Got taken in here when visiting a friend and was pleasantly surprised. A few decent beers and a huge mound of chips with (very) hot chilli-con-carne later and I was a very happy man!
16 Apr 2008 15:44
There's always a different beer, stout or cider to try here. Always guaranteed a good drink served by friendly and knowledgable staff. The only downside is that it does get very busy, a tribute to how good a venue it is.

Lost a couple of hours of my life yesterday awaiting the train choas to subside (it didn't!) enjoying several pints of superbly kept real ale and a nice sunday lunch. Lovely.
28 Jul 2008 13:31
Popped in here on my own for a swift one when visiting York on business trip. Felt comfortable despite being on my jack jones. 7 ales on as I recall including Leeds Best, a Castle Rock ale, York Terrier. I enjoyed a pint of Kelham Island Easy rider that was tip top. Intend to visit again at some point.
13 Jun 2008 21:59
Excellent range of real ales, cider and bottled beers, however this pub is trying too hard - little atmosphere, sirly staff.

Visited this lovely lookin place whilst staying at the nearby Cabins. Walked in to find the place swarming with kids, and a huge scary bloke monopolising the pool table. I thought we had walked into the pub in 'American Werewolf in London' with everyone turning round to look at us open mouthed as we entered. Everyone who was crowding the bar promptly turned around and dug themselves in by thier elbows. staedfastly refusing to move out of the way so i coud actually get to the bar for a drink. The barmaid did her best to pass our pints over the other punters, but they still they didn't move.
We sat drank our rather average beer whilst getting the evil eye from some creepy old bloke with a big dog. It was all we could do not to actually run back to the car.
27 Jun 2008 22:17
I've never really rated this place, nor its ale either. Buying a few bottle of supposed Cropton beer from M&S recently was a big mistake. The beer was lousy, the cap had rust on its inside edge and I suspect the product was 'off'. Sounds like a place and product that might be trading on former glories and reputations past.
18 Mar 2008 20:15
Whenever I've been here, and I used to live nearby, the ale has seemed to be a little problematic. Strange as it's their own beer! Far too many families, too.

On CAMRAs national inventory of historic pub interiors, which describes this pub and its history far better than I can. A quaint and interesting pub in a lovely location, with two tiny bars either side of a shop. The elevated garden terrace is popular and all manner of birdlife hopped along my table to watch me drinking my swift half ( feathered birds that is!! ). The sort of pub you wished you stumbled across in walking boots rather than by car, to fully sample all the ales on offer and to soak up the unique atmosphere.
30 May 2008 20:26
Hard to think of a more enjoyable place to have a pie and a pint, sat in the elevated beer garden with the sun shining. Very busy and justifiably so. Just off the path between Glaisdale and Goathland, an unmissable stop. Get there early to get a seat!

What a really super place, great location, great beer, great service, pies to die for.

Good pub on the whole. Shame that the "range of beers" is all Theakstones, but hardly surprising as they own the place. Good food and clean pleasant rooms.
6 Jul 2008 16:11
a very very good pub . Friendly , good food and great beer. They kindly let the Lyke Wake Race use their car park for a race checkpoint. I have visited this pub on many occasions and in all weathers and never been disappointed. Have a wander along the old railway line , you may see an adder in spring and summer. Definately visit!!
11 Mar 2008 16:18
This was one of my highlights on the second part of the coast to coast walk my partner volunteered me for in august 2007. It was a very welcome sight after 20 miles and had a good range of beers though I stuck to theakston's Grouse beater which tastes far better on tap than in the bottle in my opinion. The food was good and plentiful and the atmosphere cosy. Well worth a visit! I imagine it would be excellent at christmas!

Can't fault this pub. Great choice of real ales. Great menu. friendly and knowlegable landlord been there for over 20 years. Cyclists and walkers made very welcome.
5 Jun 2008 15:18
Very nice pub with open fire and friendly staff. Also has a good sized dinning room as well serving very good food (The steak & ale pie and the hot chocolate fudge cake come fully recommended).
Had a good selection of about 5 well kept real ales on.
The Maypole is right next to the busy A65 but noise of traffic is minimal but easy to find & well worth a pit stop if you’re passing.

another of the top rated pubs on my holiday, good beer nice locals type boozer, recommended.
28 Jul 2008 13:23
This is primarily a locals pub. They are very friendly and welcoming, five or six real aleas on at any one time. Pool table and excellent juke box with retro music on it. The locals don't use the jukebox loads, they have food but I didn't try it. Enjoyed my visit and would certainly go there again.
20 Jul 2008 16:56
There are 2 pubs in Scarborough vying for best Real Ale in town, this is one of them, never had a bad pint in there and never likely to. One bar is noisy, fun, jukebox, footy, pool. The other bar is quiet, real fire and great for socialising.

Reviews by BITE users:

It's rare to find a pub like The One Eyed Rat these days, but find it - if you love pubs and love beer. No music, no telly, just a great atmosphere and real ales to savour.

There are usually about six real ales on sale, and these change with startling speed. You try one, like it, and within a couple of days it's been replaced by another because the demand for real ales is so great. The blackboard behind the bar and over the real fire (in the winter) will tell you what's on offer and what delights are to come. It changes every day!

I'm giving it a perfect 10, because I can't think of a better real ale pub; and I used to live in Dudley, with the delights of The Beacon at Sedgley, Ma Pardoe's and the Bull and Bladder in Brierley Hill, amongst many others, to choose from.
14 Jul 2008 20:27
Stranded in Ripon for a couple of hours while Mrs AR investigated the local bellringing, I managed to find this superb pub after a couple of duds. Not only half a dozen real ales primarily from local breweries, but a fine wine list and proper food if you wanted.

This place draws a wide customer base: young and old, men and women, all enjoying the good things on offer in a serene atmosphere.

A lesson in how to do it. Eschew other pubs and try The One-Eyed Rat.

Cheers,

Recommended this pub after a visit in April. Enjoyed real ales from Daleside and Wold Top breweries. Appears to be a perfect all round pub to suit all tastes as it has good choice of ales and ciders, and good food too.
6 Jul 2008 10:37
Difficult to know how to make this pub any better but that doesn't stop the Landlord & Lady from trying!

Real Ale, Real Cider, Belgian Beer you got it. Amzing value for money for what you get. I've seen the hard work that has gone into this pub over the years, nice to see it paying off for them.

Super little Real Ale pub independantely run by John & Linda, also Cider pub of the year last year and seller of many belgian beers too, too many beers to mention but a fabulous selection and always changing, regular beer festivals through the winter months, well worth a visit.

A popular place with locals and visitors. Small, so you will end up sharing a table with strangers, which is a good think. Not an old pub though, this place opened in the late 80s. I always visit when in Knaresboro'

Walked along the front to this pub and arrived like a drowned rat in a massive downpour. Enjoyed good real ale and black pudding a friendly local had put on the bar while my coat dried off in front of the fire.
