"As this pub gets so crowded, I don't think it madders all that . . . . "

MADDERS?

As this pub gets so crowded, I don't think it madders all that much if the foodservice is strange (or whatever). Expertopinion's aside re. onion was very funny though.

I stood at the bar with an old comrade and waited to be served by a beardy weirdy barman with a red bow tie that made him look like he was from the Nation of Islam. Some guy next to us asked the Beard for a cheese, tomato and onion sandswich. This is how it went:
Punter: Cheese, Tomato and onion sandwich please
Beard: No Tomatoes.
Punter: Ok, just cheese and onion please.
Beard: No cheese.
At this point the punter looked confused. I shouted to him to just buy an onion and eat it like an apple. The Beardy Barman stared at me with menace.
Great place to lose weight or just get s##t faced.

Oozing history and character in the heart of the capital's legal quarter, this fabulously atmospheric place has one of the city's most celebrated pub interiors. If I could stomach Sam Smiths beers it would be among my favourite pubs in London. As it is, it is of architectural interest only.

Used to be quite a good pub I have drunk there regularly for about 29 years. Sadly the pub is under new ownership and the changes they have made seem to have put this pub back into the dark ages!! Slow service when the pub is even moderately busy, very poor barstaff, if they have to ask who's next to be served then they aren't very good at their job in my books!! The food is OK but I would probably go to the nearby Weatherspoons if I want to eat. There are also too many tables in my opinion, which cuts down on the space in which to enjoy a beer with your mates as you always seem to be in someones way!! Cittie of Yorke you have my rating of 3 out of 10 do something about it or lose my custom!!!

Beautiful Sam Smiths Pub, but with the usual problem; just the one ale, although it was very well kept and only £1.90 a pint.

I reviewed this a few years back when the current landlords had only been there for a while. Have to say that this is a real little gem of a pub. the landlord is always welcoming and knowledgeable, giving out trials of the consistantly changing real ales.
There are not many pubs in central London that can boast as friendly a welcome as this one. Keep up the excellent work.

On the contrary, Anchor Steam Beer is fairly well known within these shores Pat Bateman. As for the "price", well living in London you will always fork out ridiculous amounts of money for ale!

Two reviews for the price of one! Thanks Lee.
Mr Ambassador. With these 2 reviews you are really spoiling us!

The wife and I popped in here for a quick drink last saturday afternoon. A very cosy Sam Smith's pub - they had the fire on which was a nice touch given that it was so cold outside. I had the Stout and the wife had the Cider; both were very nice. This is a very charming pub with a lovely interior. We'll definately visit again.

£1.99 a pint!!!!!!!!!!!!
Central London!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fascinating pub layout.....worth a visit.

All the drinks are from Sam Smiths.

Last year we had lunch at the Princess Louise and it was superb.

We took a guest this week and sadly found that it had deteriorated. It was dirty, the service was very slow, vegetables cold (though food otherwise alright and reasonably priced)

The decor of the pub is beautiful and I hope that we just encountered a 'bad patch' and that the pub returns to its previous high standard.

HGH

Visited here for the first time last week with a Meetup language group - excellent evening when we ate, drank and managed to speak well with each other.
But, apparently, it is now no longer possible to book tables together downstairs for this sort of group.
So, even though we are a guaranteed group of 30 or so people and growing (which sounds like about £500+ of revenue), we will now have to go elsewhere where we can be sure of some tables and space together.
Such a pity, as I do like the steak nights!

Very nice for a JDW, clean and light.

Beer always seems to be to a good standard.

Loads of curly between 12 and 3...always a plus.

And the odd Celeb (if you can call him that) can be spotted! Gus the Bin Man from Stenders was in today! What a mug!!!

Overall, good service and good beer. That will do me!

Usually pretty reliable - you can always get a seat and the beers are well kept. Staff vary from excellent to downright surly, but generally speaking it's one of London's better 'poons. They've also got a 'real' fire. Handy for Chancery Lane tube, too.

Tables aren't always as clean as they could be - when I asked for ours to be wiped, the lass behind the bar handed me the cloth. Leave off, that's your job.

The Sunday roast was excellent, just about the best pub food I've ever had. The Charles Wells IPA was superb also. Only disappointment was the beer range itself - all 6 handpumps were well known beers.

Very busy - which is expected given it's Central location (even if it is down an alley by Holborn tube station). Had a pint of Caledonaina 80/- which was a bit musty but drinkable, A reasonable enough kind of place but nothing special and not worth making a special effort to find.

visited last month but forgot to post a review , probably because of the number of pubs visited that day. one of my favorite pubs in the area, friendly bar staff, decent beer, all in a good atmospheric setting.I much prefer this pub to the mitre in Hatton Garden going on recent experiences, well worth a visit.
