Not bad but very bland. It strikes me as a bar that should do better but it was a Sunday I guess its hard to judge when its so quiet.

Not my kinda place sorry!

Terrible, Apart from the barmans mates who were loafing around at the bar swearing, there were only 2 others in when I visited and they didnt seem to be enjoying themselves.
They have started serving cask ale which is new since my last visit when none was available from this Cask Marque acreddited pub. Needless to say the beer (some marstons muck, served through a swan neck with diffuser) was all but undrinkable.
This really is a waste of a nice old building which should be a thriving pub, but the newly opened cosy club next door has taking what little trade they ever had.

Full of people, who's mummy or daddy own half of somerset - plus you need a mortgage to enjoy a drink, assuming you can get one, which you won't unless you have the jack wills clothing on!

I've eaten here a couple of times; each time thinking that I'd get a better level of service, and food quality. Each time being highly disapointed.
If you can find an item on the menu that is actually available, it will usually come out looking appalling, and not up to standards. They obviously employ a 12 year old to "warm up" the food, and chuck it together with no skill what so ever.

Avoid this place!

I can only ask 'why?'

Why such poor food?
Why such ignorant staff, infuriatingly disturbed by customers?
Why such a filthy state, damaged furniture and wasted potential of a great site?
Why go in to begin with? Why go back? Don't worry I won't!

mm101 - 29 May 2009 17:53
What an appalling waste of a prime site. Nothing good to say about this place apart from the wonderful building and the garden out the back.
Altogether poor
Dr_Pangloss - 23 May 2009 20:39
Seems like the centre of Taunton will soon become a 'dry' area with absolutely nowhere to go for a pint- what is going on in that town?
hammers101 - 25 Apr 2009 16:44
Four other pubs in the vacinity of this place have shut down recently (Yates, que paso. moat house and firstones) This place is just a poor as any of those but somehow survives. How much longer?
Dr_Pangloss - 24 Apr 2009 21:46
point taken- i did take a bit of a chance!

hammers101 - 7 Feb 2009 17:02
Went in here sunday evening, empty at 7pm. We ordered food which came back with some of it missing only to be told that the ingredients were not available-after we had ordered it! The staff were very pleasant and looked fed up with the lack of customers- a karaoke night was planned so we swiftly left. Shame really nice staff, wonderful venue, bags of potential- zero happening though.
hammers101 - 2 Feb 2009 18:28
Another thing CAMRA could look into is why this pub is given the CASK MARQUE accreditation (supposedly assuring us of the quality of their ales) when they don't actually sell any REAL ALE.

Dr_Pangloss - 23 Jan 2009 20:50
Hammers101, I couldn't agree with you more. Any chance of Somerset CAMRA addressing this issue, or are they just a drinking club that run a beer festival once a year?

There are many pubs in Taunton with the potential to be excellent due to location, architecture, history etc such as The Pitcher. However, I fear due to appaling amateur management, with no vision or desire to be different, catering for the 18-30 Ibiza crowd, they all miss the opportunity to create an atmosphere that would attract a more eclectic crowd where customers could enjoy a night out without the preponderance of bad language, aggressive behaviour and served sub standard food. Taunton pubs with character in the centre particularly( The George, Four Alls, The Tudor, The Full Moon, Wood Street etc)have long gone and all we are left with is mediocrity. Shame for the county town to be so poorly represented.

Used to be a good watering hole, especially when the rugby was on with some decent nosh. Now more expensive than London pubs, what is going on? It's in Taunton, not Knightsbridge. I see the kitchen was nearly shut down by the local council. It did not score any stars at all in the local environmental health check which you can check on at the Taunton Dean Council web-site. Mr Scrumptious kebabs had a higher score!! Check it out yourself if you don't believe me.

Another Taunton pub that should be more busy than it is, no-one ever in here at lunch times, it should be buzzing in the setting it has in the middle of town. Is it because the meals are so ridiculously expensive for Taunton, a pub like this in Bristol would be constantly lively. Lower your prices, the food is not that great anyway. Is Taunton dying in the evening, everywhere seems to be quiet!
hammers101 - 1 Nov 2008 12:05
This used to be a half-decent place when it was the Old Library. Now it's heaven for those who like ice in their "cider" and expensive fizzy water sold as beer. Don't bother
Paris_Hilton - 22 Aug 2008 13:23
"This is one of the best bars in Taunton. Fact."

That may be true, Emilina, but Taunton doesn't have many bars worth visiting. This place is just passable.
YoYo - 28 May 2008 13:55
This is one of the best bars in Taunton. Fact. The other is the Most House, with Mambo/Millers coming up behind them, cos it's all about their beer garden. People would most probably whine about the price of drinks ANYWHERE in Taunton, as most of the population there frequent at the Perkin Warbeck or The coal Orchard (Whetherspoons/Lloyds) and are used to getting what they pay for in these venues; crap drinks.
emilina - 18 May 2008 14:12
Avoid at all costs-dirty,expensive and dire.
merlin2 - 16 Nov 2007 10:45
Expensive, dirty and unpleasant.
anonymous - 6 Sep 2007 12:41
KEG MARQUE ?
anonymous - 21 May 2007 22:35
Taunton doesn't have much in the way of real ale pubs, but this one is on the "Cask Marque" list, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's a beautiful old building too.
Unfortunately, despite the cask marque stuff, it doesn't actually sell any cask ales, and was full of lager swilling kids.
One to avoid in the future, I think.
Brahmsandliszt - 14 May 2007 21:29
2.70 for a vodka and is not including the price for the mixer..... for this price could make sure than the toilets are clean.
helenrodez - 6 May 2007 13:33
I've had lunch there two times in the last month. Both times it took ages for the waiter (same waiter both times) to notice us. Not a bad place for for lunch. I like their burgers. The drinks are bit pricey.

It's part of the Taunton later evening circuit for those too old for Shout, Que Pasa etc i.e. over 21 and employed.

The Taunton Evening Circuit For Those Older Than 21, Employed: Brazz, Firestone, Moat House, Pitcher and Piano.

Could be a nice place but it s too impersonnal... especially when is quiet
expatriate - 20 Feb 2007 13:44
Despite some of the other more dodgy reviews, I have always had a good night here. It has a really chilled out vibe in the evening and the cocktails rock!

moonflower - 10 Jan 2007 14:15
Bloody awful. Neither suitable for young idiots nor the sensibly middle aged. Instead it's full of middle aged idiots.
TA010929 - 5 Jan 2007 23:50
Now called the pitcher and Piano. Strange name, strange pub. They haven't got a piano, and they don't sell pitchers (at least not to me when I asked).
No decent ales. A bit like an up market weatherspoons, but I suppose that could be said of just about anywhere (including the Navy and Military)
TA010929 - 29 Dec 2006 15:15
Pitcher and Piano... too bloody expensive. Boring... for people over 40.
anonymous - 1 Dec 2006 12:46
You don't have to scratch the surface too hard to see that this place is still very much a library. Sshhhhhhh! No talking or messing around.... Avoid
Mr_Local - 2 Aug 2006 16:27
This bar has now been taken over by a chain called Pitcher and Piano. I decided to have a nosey the other week and was impressed to see that it has had an extensive refurbishment. I was also impressed by the range of dishes on the menu and the service recieved. I enjoyed a German larger they serve called Paulaner, I have not heard of this before, but will definatley be having it again. Very impressed, will be going again, and again, and again.....
anonymous - 2 Apr 2006 15:49
This place is now called "The Pitcher and Piano"
YoYo - 25 Mar 2006 10:13

anonymous - 8 Apr 2005 11:50
use to be best pub in taunton good food great atmosphere!! visited recently staff are rude and ignorant food rubbish and no atmosphere! one barman stood out dark hair and glasses very polite he was there when the pub was good! do yourself a favour and get a job where people will appreciate your talents rather than your bosses now!
LANDLORD - 20 Dec 2004 20:17
