called in on fri lunch 17 june ordered to simple meals waited 35 mins had to ask where is our food to young lad,did not even apologise for delay,food was rubbish must have been on the hot plate and forgotten about,if you want edible food dont bother,beer ok.

Another Nicholsons branded pub this one offering pies instead of sausages. A smaller not so good selection of ale, Wadsworth and John smiths so nothing to inspire me to rush in again soon. Staff a little rusty.

The Punch Bowl is another of Nicholson's "Classic Pubs" and is centrally situated in the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Stonegate.
A fine Brewers Tudor exterior leads into a Tudor style wood panelled drinkers bar on the left. On the right is a more comfortable food orientated bar, seemingly principally catering for tourists, off which is another bar at the back.
An information panel tells us that The Punch Bowl has been a pub for over 400 years , although a pub T shirt on sale behind the bar bears the wording "circa 1500" , which seems to be 500 years, not 400, to me. We also learn that the pub has had 2 major fires during this period. Perhaps inevitably, the pub is alleged to have several ghosts.
On my late June visit, beers on were Leeds Best, Thornbridge Jaipur IPA, John Smiths Cask Ale and Wadworths 6X. The Leeds Best - £ 2.90p - wasn't desperately good. Interestingly, the much stronger Jaipur IPA was on offer at £ 2.85p.
This is a fine traditional pub, but it doesn't stand out from the crowd in this well pubbed city.

Olde worlde city centre pub that claims to be over 400 years old & has 2 ghosts. Inside it is a maze of rooms with low beamed ceilings, dark wood & a stone floor which gives a cosy, warm ambience. I liked the idea of putting tasting notes on the handpumps - very helpful. The 2 regular handpumps are John Smith Cask & Black Sheep. 4 other guests on my 2 visits & I was lucky enough to try them all. The Leeds Best was very nice. They will also do tasters too. There is also a "coming soon" beer menu. Extensive food menu & they seem to specialise in pies. Infact they have a pie menu. On the wall there was a display stating that during the last week they had sold 634 pies & 1321 pints. On our second visit we opted for the minature pie tasters. Absolutely superb! Friendly staff & reasonable prices this is one of my favourite York pubs.

Pretty disappointed with this pub, the beers were tired and dull and it seemed to be just set up to serve enormous plates of food. Not one I would go back to for the beer.

Definitely the place to go if you are hungry!! The large fish and chips is very large indeed and the rest of the menu looked pretty good too. Nice drop of Black Sheep bitter and regularly changing guest ales. Efficient service from friendly staff. The diet is certainly taking a bashing this holiday!

All a bit 'good time', and attracts the slightly less adventurous types, but pleasant enough as a crawl-joiner. Good pint of Leeds Best

Late review from November when we had a week in York. Enjoyed a Badger beer here. Not to be confused with the Wetherspoons Punchbowl pub. This one is a REAL pub.

me and my partner came to york for out 1 year anniversary we walked into this pub and decided to eat here....it was very busy but once we were seated someone took our order, we had a starter which came within 5 mins and then our mains wasnt far behind.......i reccomend the pies they are gorgeous! its worth waiting for the food and its a good pint too.

Nice Pub, with chilled music in the daytime. Deuchars IPA Guest Ale was off, but had a nice Guinness and food was good.

Not a bad pub. A little crowded in the from bar area, but the pint of Bass was nice. Reasonable rates for food! I was surprised to have gotten so much in the order so that was a bonus. Only negative were a few punters screaming at each other in a constant barrage of fighting threats. We just steered clear and went to the back for our pints and dinner.

Excellent pub which gets very busy at weekends but is worth the visit. Good beer and excellent food.

This pub isn't the wetherspoon's, thats the punch bowl on blossom Street. This place is distinctly un-wetherspoon's-like...

The better Wetherspoons in York, went in on york races day 3 deep at the bar at 1030am but still got served quickly. A traditional pub.

A pleasant enough city centre, traditional pub. Low ceilings, exposed beams, and pleasant nooks and cranies to sit in. The serve a couple of hand-pulled beers, and food during the days.
Currently undergoing a renovation, so wait to see how it turns out!
