user reviews of the Star, Dorking

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice little pub on the edge of Dorking good beer and service.
Thank goodness that F``k wit slerpy doesn`t drink here.
Keep him in Croydon it`s his level.
FredCarno - 22 Aug 2013 10:38
Wealdman,His name is Al not All, you dopey ******* ! Read through your rubbish or better still don't post or get your carer to post on your behalf!
slerpy - 31 Jul 2013 15:01
All - you the bloke who was asked to leave the Royal Oak in Rusper?
wealdman - 31 Jul 2013 12:18
"Still, an awful place..."

So why do you keep going back there?

Boredom?

Won't anyone else serve you?
Cider_AL - 13 Jul 2013 21:52
Still, an awful place...
wealdman - 11 Jul 2013 14:11
Elfhelp, sorry about your elfin friend. As a regular does she like the pub or is it just the closest? Hope all goes well for her in hospital.
Stonecoat - 31 Oct 2011 13:48
So don't go mandraker, this is not a difficult concept is it? In my experience Croydon is no different to anywhere else in the southeast.....Except parts of Kent!
This is a good pub!
Stonecoat - 31 Oct 2011 13:43
Stonecoat thinks that the customers are odd and that when we bring our KFC's, kebabs and fish and chips into The Star - we should clean things up ourselves. I do not agree. Let those who work there do it...like my mum does at home. My mate, a regular here, is in hospital; she has curviture of the spine (its a VERY small pub) - even though she is also an elf.....
elfhelp - 27 Oct 2011 22:45
stone says 'bring your leftovesr to...' service is a major ingredient of any business - including pubs. there is NONE in this 300 sq ft kiosk. ok. its different, but so is Croydon.
mandraker - 27 Oct 2011 21:55
Brewmason, if you're asking me, yes they are! It is what it is and if they want a great big pub with no soul there are places in town they could choose instead. What is wrong with taking your BYO leftovers to the bar or taking them home or to the litterbin? There are so many pubs in Dorking I don't understand the need to slag off a good pub because it is small or allows you to BYO and not have to buy their own micro stuff. The staff are good in every way and the customers are decent and varied (yes some are odd, but interesting mostly). I don't live locally but have often visited all the pubs here and always drink in this pub whenever I'm around. I also drink in JDW pubs and enjoy doing so.......but bloody hell, Vive la Difference!!

Well you did ask!
Stonecoat - 27 Oct 2011 16:11
The bike is part of the bric-a-brac.
mandraker - 27 Oct 2011 10:25
in there tonight - saw a bicycle parked against the counter. no rider. one wheel.
wealdman - 26 Oct 2011 22:46
known as the kiosk locally, people often have to go outside to turn around.
wealdman - 26 Oct 2011 13:43
Yes, this minute pub is jammed by anything over 50 people who, when they bring their own take-away food, make space problems even worse. Not the place to avoid someone. On the plus side, its quirky and the service is obviously fast - although the beer somewhat mediocre. A rating of almost 7 is silly.
tradervic - 26 Oct 2011 11:47
Coat...are these chaps really wrong?

BYO food may be a good idea - but who clears up?

NOT the punter............................ or staff!
brewmason - 25 Oct 2011 21:28
tempest and randolf7, posted same day 1/2 an hour apart! Issues? Bad day? Been somewhere else before? Assuming you won't be hurrying back....Hooray. I really hope people ignore these posts and judge on ALL of the others!
Stonecoat - 25 Oct 2011 17:14
Sorry - a cameel is a camel with two e's - a mis-spelling caused by 74 year old fingers and a small keyboard.
papavar - 15 Oct 2011 09:41
What is a cameel? The BYO food concept is interesting - just a way to save some space; but blokes have been sitting next to me eating KFC's and kebabs and there's nowhere to hide. Doesn't help beer drinking. JDW's aren't bad - but sadly, none in Dorking. Yet.
brewmason - 14 Oct 2011 09:31
I don't take my cameel to the pub and anyone who does should be reported to the RSPCA. Good things come in small packages and this smal package has good beer, great food as you bring your own and really helpfull staff.Go to Wetherspoons if you want miles of space and a dozen second rate ales.
papavar - 14 Oct 2011 08:34
Yes, about the size of four cars and ideal if you like people standing on your feet and breathing in your ears! A camel ride to get to the toilets (upstairs) and your drink and space may well have vanished on your return, 15 minutes later. No parking and far too small for, any, comfort. Accurate rating - 3.
tempest - 13 Oct 2011 10:57
The floor area of this pub is c350/400 sq. ft. A 7+ rating is well off the mark - as cats cannot be swung in the place. Easily, the smallest pub in Surrey....
randolf7 - 13 Oct 2011 10:28
Wonderful. wonderful, wonderful - lovely little pub with customers and staff who know how to make someone feel at home. Well worth the 'journey' to get there.
celt7 - 13 Oct 2011 09:39
Less is more - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; or in the case of The Star small is BIG - maximum use of the space, inside and outside. Beer in great condition. They aren't able to do food, so they let you bring in your own and will supply plates and cutlery if necessary. How sensible!
richpete - 12 Sep 2011 23:51
I agree with Whiez, 'cept I gave it 9. Would be 10 if only 1 more good ale! About the best pub I've been in. I travel many miles to drink here. Well done to the management and staff......and the customers!!
Stonecoat - 17 Aug 2011 13:42
An astonishingly pleasant and gregarious atmosphere. Drinking here is a unique experience and thoroughly recommended. I give it 8 points and only the relatively limited selection of ales stops me from rating it a ten. IPA is a good beer, but if The Star could add a less sweet ale, like Young's Bitter for example, it would achieve perfection like no other.
Whiez - 16 Aug 2011 12:42
Amazing pub with excellent service, superb eclectic events calendar, great guiness (will compete with the best you have ever tasted), three ales on tap and is full of interesting friendly characters.

It may be small (seriously you will not believe how small until you see it) but the stage area has hosted 6 peice bands, plays, magic shows...the list goes on!

The landlord and core staff are very welcoming and make loads of effort to make this place stand out from the crowd with a genuine love of music and the wider arts.

A tiny pub with a massive heart and thriving community because of it. The 10 rating is no exaggeration.
NowVertical - 8 May 2011 12:43
Terrific place to drink. Great atmosphere, very eclectic bunch of people go in here, I defy anyone not to enjoy themselves. Service is great and the glasses are clean . . . . too many pubs serve drinks in glasses sporting the last drinkers lipstick. . . . nice! This pub surely deserves a higher rating. Will be back there very soon.
artemis - 15 Mar 2011 19:56
The smallest pub in Dorking, right at the bottom of West Street. It has a kidney shaped lounge with the bar in the middle. The righthand side has a raised stage area with church pew type seating on one side, contrasting with an orange sofa on the other side. The other side has 3 sofas. It is a Green King pub which serves a nice pint of their IPA. Worth a visit.
boozers_knows - 17 Feb 2011 14:01
I love this pub, all sorts of people and goings on! GK IPA and Speckled Hen, I have the latter and is good. V. Friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit.
Stonecoat - 26 Apr 2010 08:45
I like this place. I've been there pre and post baby. Felt very comfortable bringing the wee one in and breast feeding whilst they were quiet during the day. I only wish it was a bit bigger!
erinfromdorking - 1 Mar 2010 19:59
The Landlord drinks Guinness. From my user name you'll discern that this is of some importance. On some evenings, half of the imbibers are similarly partaking.

Luckily they have two taps.

And as Guinness drinkers are, by definition, more intelligent, this guarantees conviviality.
makemineaguinness - 17 Feb 2010 19:49
A cracking little pub with loads going one. Only Green King beers, but they are well kept. This pub stands out in a town with loads of pubs as a place where the landlord cares about the place. They even let you bring in your own food.
charlie_one_two_three - 30 Jan 2010 09:47
Fantastic pub, spent NYE there last week and had a great time.

Have not tried the ale on any of my visits so can't comment but the staff are really friendly and efficient which they often need to be as it can get very busy.

One of those places that is always making an effort to do something different with live music, events etc. and is all the better for it. Definitely worth a visit.
petegraaf - 2 Jan 2010 19:29
This is one of those places that you have to grow into. It's different, individual & that can often unsettle people, but that's the pub's charm. If you want something funky (!), with an eclectic mix of people & entertainment & a good selection of beer, wine & spirit, give "The Star" another try.
colinfor - 20 Nov 2009 18:09
It's a great pub, but wholly uninspring beers, usually GK IPA and perhaps one other GK brew.
GGG - 20 Nov 2009 14:38
Cracking Pub,interesting...mmmmm. Only problem is its Green King ales ..bland; but heyho .....I enjoyed the retro feel of several Camparis mit soda.
jeffdaff - 17 Aug 2009 22:20
So much good stuff happening here, music great, people really nice... oh and they sell beer too!
redsnow - 18 May 2009 12:56
Love, love, love this pub! Everyone from both sides of the bar are always really friendly, and there are so many different cultural/arty/musical events going on there is something for everyone. Yes it may be small, but that adds to it's charm and often it's the bussiet pub in Dorking with people spilling out onto the street. 'Tis utterly fabulous!
Jen08 - 12 May 2009 09:08
Friendly, great atmosphere, small but perfectly formed. Great pub for locals to meet up. Lots of entertainment. Can't fault it really.
CarolineT - 9 May 2009 11:48
Love this pub, friendly arty crowd and nice staff. Had many nice evenings there with my friend who lives around the corner. Small though so can get very packed.
paulie22 - 6 May 2009 13:34
This is a real family orientated pub, and a worth a visit for anyone in Dorking. Only downside is that it's a pub where you have go hang yourself back a bit, so as not to offend anyone. So just a small criticsm, but a nice place.
PubMessenger - 24 Aug 2008 11:15
Great pub, very good atmosphere, Bar Staff and Landlord very hospitable, makes the most fantastic Mojito's with lots of mint and lime freshness with a slug of rum to add some punch - Definately to be recommended
simplysarah41 - 27 May 2008 13:16
A superb pub. Very small but friendly and relaxed. There's lots happening if you want it (films, open mic nights, vinyl nights, quizzes etc) or its just a great place for a pint on a big leather sofa by a fire.
It's nice to be in a pub that's trying to offer something more.
AShep - 18 Apr 2008 14:02
Popped in the other week for a quick drink and was greeted by very friendly staff. Beer was good, as was was the nice friendly atmosphere. Seems like quite a friendly arty pub with lots of interesting events coming up. Not heard of cinema in a pub before, but sounds like fun. I will definitely be back.
publover5 - 29 Feb 2008 18:27
Superb.
Ento1 - 19 Feb 2008 15:50
This is a fantastic, cosy little pub. Drinks are always good quality and not overpriced. Food from the cafe next door is simple, but great for lunch (the best bacon sarnie in Surrey!) or you can order a takeaway in (they'll provide crockery and cutlery).

Loads of things going on here - live music, games, quizzes, lectures! (with a twist), a cinema on sunday afternoons, art evenings, poetry....the list goies on.

Great atmosphere, and a super place for a quiet drink if you don't fancy joining in with the above.
rumrumbob - 12 Feb 2008 19:12
A welcoming, intimate and free-thinking little pub which has now successfully shrugged off its notorious history.
Decent beers and wines, plus all the usual tipples & a great place to eat your fish & chips or takeaway.
There is always some kind of event going on that you can either join in or watch from afar like a wildlife documentary maker...
I like it.
joodoox - 9 Feb 2008 12:20
What a cool little pub. I love the fact that an arty, welcoming, gay-friendly boozer can be enjoyed by such a varied clientelle in a small town like Dorking. I go there a lot and often forget I'm not in Brighton!
There's no food but you can take stuff in or order a take-away - and their Guinness is amazing.
The bar staff are by far the best in the town too. If only it was a tad bigger - but then it wouldn't be the Star, I suppose.
ravenwood - 28 Jan 2008 21:44
this used to be a great little pub but someones letting things slip. Not so great sevice ( staff seem to be more interested in the children in the pub than the paying punters!?) and what is the point of having heaters outsude if they are never turned on? Hope things pick up used to be one of the best in dorking.
discerningboozer - 19 Dec 2007 09:53
Poor selection for lunch (prepared in restaurant next door?); Green King IPA or Speckled Hen; needs agood shake up.
AbeD - 18 Oct 2007 18:06
Went with some mates not from Dorking one Saturday night, they seemed to enjoy it here, got two lovely comfy leather sofas to ourselves. Nice chilled out atmosphere !
simon135 - 21 Jan 2007 20:43
This is a fantastic cosy little pub where you are always greeted with a smile. There are weekly fun events throughout the year, regular live performances (of music, poetry, art etc.). The latest addition to the Star is a professional recording studio on the first floor.
rumbob - 23 Sep 2006 14:45
great pub if your part of a crowd, but for a lone girl, not part of the culture scene but trying to get a foot in the door can be very difficult. May be better if more people knew that the landlord was gay and single, definaley need more gays and bi's then everyone would be happy. but on the whole a good fun night out if you get with the musicians. Great artists shame The star's the only place that have the innovation to take a chance.
doofuss - 21 Sep 2006 00:38
A fantastic quirky little one bar pub full of atmosphere. Has a no TV policy, hosts a variety of odd events under the banner 'the culture conspiracy. Ian the manager has made a real effort to turn this pub around in the last year. You can order take aways to the pub and they will provide plates etc. Bring your own CD's and they 'might' get played

eziorgod - 24 Apr 2006 11:36
Intimate, quirky, friendly little pub. Great for a quiet mid week drink but also had a good drunken night out for a friends birthday recently so a good all rounder!!
Razzle - 17 Feb 2006 09:58
Excellent and very friendly. Either for a quiet Drink and chat to the Bar staff; or at Busy times/event nights just a great laugh.
anonymous - 12 Sep 2005 16:02
Ellie, sadly past away on the 15th February 2005. Ian has taken over the tennacy, and has worked really hard to develop something a bit different from the rest of the public Houses in Dorking. Bless you Ellie, Hollie, Max & I miss you. Hope you liked the funeral, I tried really hard to give you a send off you would have been proud off. xx
dsutcliff - 13 May 2005 14:57
Seems a little bit dreary here to be honest. Maybe it's better when they have entertainment nights, which are on quite often.
Will2 - 22 Apr 2005 11:05
I cant say the atompshere was all that here. At least they did help with directions to dorking deepdene station
aleman - 22 Apr 2005 00:58
Lovely, chilled pub. The bad old reputation of its past has gone. The racists, sexists and homophobes have been kicked out at last. Hippyish, folky live music every Thursday and comfy sofas. A pretty, friendly landlady and a gay landlord - who'd've thought it a year back? The star is bright once more...
Janey - 27 May 2004 17:23
Nearly Forgot, The Star is probably the cheapest watering hole in Dorking, now serving Old Speckled Hen 5.2% and a remarkable 2:50 a pint, also Greene King IPA at 2:20. Bacardi Breezers at a special 2:00 a bottle, while stocks last!
dsutcliff - 20 Feb 2004 13:23
Addie has returned to Preston. Ellie and Ian are manning the pumps. Open Mike Night Now every Thursday, the Ambience has changed significantly, Nice place for a quiet drink.
dsutcliff - 20 Feb 2004 13:20
This pub has now been put up for rent by the brewery (Greene King)
The pub is a little on the small side but, it has great potential. Any takers???
anonymous - 1 Aug 2003 13:33
Got that right, awful pub expensive for no good reason, some of the staff are down right rude. To be avoided.
Rich - 10 Jul 2003 11:02
A small little pub which serves average beer - IPA , Courage. Can be a little claustrophobic and some of the people who frequent this establishment can be a bit sexist, racist etc.
Chris - 5 May 2003 18:20

got anything to say about this pub?
