user reviews of Stamford Arms, Bowdon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is the more traditional of the two Bowdon pubs, with lots of dark wood and plenty of comfortable bench seating. I agree with a previous reviewer that the interior is a bit lacking in natural light, though. When I called there were six cask beers on, including three from the Marston's stable. It was much quieter than the next-door Griffin, but possibly this was due to the kitchen being closed for refurbishment.

My overwhelming impression of this pub was that it was a little too dark and dingy. Old wooden benches, wood panelling and a parquet floor give it a moody atmosphere. Three real ales were served - Cask Boddingtons, Pedigree and Abbot. There were 3 other handpulls that were unused. An outdoor area at the front was being used by those that value daylight. There is certainly plenty of seating and from the outside you can see how big the adjoining function room is too. But a few lights switched on wouldn't go amiss.

I went to a friends 60th birthday party this week. The function room was an excellent venue for a group of about eighty people and it had a good dance floor. Two real ales were available as well as lagers for the youngsters. The pub produced curry for the function too. The bar staff were friendly and helpful. The main room in the pub was large, clean and felt good. Plenty of spare seats.

Overall, a disappointing experience. The staff were rude and there was distinct lack of atmosphere (less than eight people in the main bar on a Saturday night). But I suppose this makes it ideal for those looking for a quiet night. As far as I was aware, it also seemed to be the case that drinks prices are doubled if you happen to be attending a function in the hall next door to the main room, even when you are using the same bar as the regulars. This was rather frustrating! Wouldn't recommend, in my opinion there are far better pubs out there, though I can't comment on the food.

Very nice quiet setting opposite local church. Pub does good trade on food although I have never tried it. Beer seems to be changeable at best. They'll frequently have 5/6 casks beers advertised but they appear to be off a lot of the time and even when they are on, they can be hit and miss. Strange when they seem to give so much bar space to them. Has large flat screen TVs, good for sports (can get busy).

Very plain pub company pub, though with decent Boddies.

Good range of real ales reasonably kept. The food's ok but nothing special. Far worse places than this, believe me.
