please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sadly the last post has now been played for The Old Sergeant. Enfield probably has fared better than most in terms of pub closures, with some that were shut being reopened and so forth, but the loss of a good local boozer such as this should still be mourned and the drinkers of Enfield are poorer for it being gone.

The Old Sergeant is no more..
Now boarded up and will be soon demolished to make way for a development of new flats.
Will miss it as a piece of Enfield history but the fact that I was prepared to frequent the Wetherspoons round the corner rather than go in here gives you a clue to what I thought of it as a pub.

Been going here recently.

Good stuff.

1. Friendly staff.
2. Courage beer.

This pub is part of a dieing breed of pubs where a friendle style of staffing is seen. a good juke box, a pool table and darts board. With a meet raffle on a sunday . Regualr entertainment . But keep it a secret other wise the imbreds from the moon underwater may make there way in.

In terms of a local pub, you will struggle to find better in the area. the Wetherspoons is full of idiots and most other pubs in the area are very expensive. What you see is what you get - reasonably priced drinks, a no-trouble pub and good company. The regulars are actually a good bunch, and you get all-sorts coming in, from the football crowd to OAPs from the flats next door. The beer is OK - Courage Best is generally kept well and the Guiness is OK too. Well worth a revisit for those who didn't like it first time!

I got a bit of a frosty reception upon entering and so I decided to have a half of Guinness and make my visit brief. The landlady served me a pint knowing full well that I had asked for a half, but I didnt complain as it only cost 2.25 and I found her to be slightly menacing.

There are three hand pumps, but two were out of use as Courage Best was the only available ale.

I spotted a pool table and there were a couple of old hells angel look-a-likes playing some decent live music last Saturday.

I felt a little on edge in here which is unusual for me, especially in a proper boozer Ill be avoiding in the future as I shouldn't have to win the trust of the locals before enjoying a pint of beer.

If you are looking for fancy food and polished service forget it

This is a REAL pub, real people and if it is your first visit, as it was mine a while ago, yes they will be wary of you, give it time and you will get a welcome.

beer is ok, outside area is pants tho

I went in here while visiting a friend - we struggled to find anywhere else local to watch Sky Sports 1! Seemed a nice enough place - friendly staff anyway. The locals didn't seem too bad; a few wanted to talk and we didn't feel unwelcome.

Having passed this pub many a time over the years, I thought I'd give it a go, big mistake. Didn't quite make it inside, was put off by the surly individuals standing outside ! So popped around to The Moon instead. Check out other reviews for this pub, you have been warned.

I actually quite like this pub - but to be honest there's no getting around the fact that it's full of inbred yokels.

If you're the barfly type who likes your pubs old fashioned and slightly seedy though, I'd recommend it.

A pub isn't a real pub without that special air of hopelessness and desperation.

Average pub i guess, not too good but the beer is quite nice. Just not too much in the way of an atmosphere.

been there a few times, very much a local pub, beer not bad, will pop in now and again

Nice pub, enjoyed the beer, enjoyed the new refurbished look, was just a shame that the regulars and management decided to display their bigotry towards the best regulars in Enfield Town.

the beer is good and at a good price! bar staff are very good (they can remember your round even if they served you an hour ago!) nice new lay out.

Have never noticed the bears of which Meach speaks, sounds a bit bloody dangerous to me. Still at least the beers are good!!!
Mr.Monkfish - 24 May 2005 13:45
I LOVE this pub. Good bears at excellent prices. Always a nice welcome from the superb bar staff. Guinness is poured properly. Glasses always clean. Great for watching Sport and as Monkfish points out Rugby given just as much chance as Football. I cant think of one way I would or could improve this pub.

Only been there once in a group of people on a bit of a crawl. Got a few strange looks from the regulars when we first walked in, but bar staff were helpful and friendly and we had no problems.

Good pub, if a little cliquey. Bar staff are brilliant, friendly and beer is cheap. We went there after our pub(Enfield Arms) was shut down. Were welcomed during the week but at the weekend if you look funny you wont be allowed in?????????????

Pretty near perfect. Good beers at a reasonable price served by friendly and efficient staff who are at pains to make you feel welcome. Plasma TV gives a much clearer picture for the sports than the usual big projector screens and rugby is given as much of a chance as football. Pool table area is pleasant if smokey. Has one of those new-fangled jukeboxes with millions of tunes on it which is set at a sensible volume so that you can hear the music without having to shout over it. Even the toilets are clean and tidy. A nice place for a quiet drink or something a bit more lively as the lay out means that all kinds of people can find an environment to suit them(even grouchy old SidneyP!). Definitely one of the best pubs in Enfield.
Mr.Monkfish - 16 Dec 2004 11:02
Its great. Recently re-opened and a really nice surprise. Genuine, friendly and very competent staff, and a fair selection good beers that are properly looked after too. A dirty great TV for the football or rugby, and a pool table. The layout of the pub provides at least 3 specific areas that lend to a natural separation; Chavs over there, older gents over there, the rest of you in the middle.
SidneyP - 7 Dec 2004 16:13
pub has re-opened,and looks to be doing well .

2 hand-pumps
