Well pretty much as before but alas the real ales are DIRE flatas a pancake and just tasteless water....Trading on the pretentious and name I would say now.. got the same chair drying jobby from owner....In all honesty gone down the pan....needs to concentrate on good ale and food to get the real customers in and not the pretentious office jockeys...

Had a visit a few weeks ago the food coming from the kitchens look good and well presented. Real ales can be hit and miss but service good and good of the owner and staff member to go outside with their cloths drying off the seats and tables after a sudden shower. Beers can be pricey a mixed bag of clientelle. From what i've seen it's either busy or slack, but, a deluge of clients on sunny weekends.

We stayed in a holiday home a few yards from this hotel/pub, September 2010. Called in for a drink one evening just to check it out, ordered a couple of drinks at the bar, was served by a surly barman who could barely pass the time of day. After getting our drinks we were amazed to see there was absolutely nowhere to sit and have a drink. You would have to use the restaurant to get a seat. So my conclusion is , this is not a pub by any stretch of the imagination. After reading previous comments we were expecting great things, but ended up sitting outside on a coldish September night, and as for friendly staff, we never saw any.

This is a great location tucked out of the way at the end of the marina. Its a great looking old stone built building, similar to what youd expect in some of the villages around Bath. Inside its obviously had a makeover, and doesnt have quite the olde worlde charm that you might expect. In fact some parts of it look more like a hotel lounge than a pub.

The main draw for most people though its likely to be the large patio area which has good views across the channel. Its obviously gets very busy at times as there were dozens of tables there all crammed in together. Theres also a small garden on a lower level which is much more secluded and only has a handful of tables. The food seemed popular although we didnt try it ourselves.

Beers on tap were Tribute, Doom Bar, Butcombe, Butcombe Blond and Cheddars Gorge Best. The ciders were Thatchers Gold, Blackthorn and Magners.

First I would like to say this is an excellent , if pricey, pub in Portishead and probably shares with The Windmill for the best position and views.

So why does the landlady think she needs to " Big Up" this already good pub in such a blatant way with her amateurish food writer reviews. Hoping to fool us? Why ? Myself and a lot of people already return often enough because we like the place and the staff we come into contact with. I will continue to do so, one silly woman will not spoil my enjoyment of the place.

Hi i am the land lady of the Royal, just to let you all know that the number on here is incorrect and will direct you to the Royal Oak. The correct number is 01275 843944. We look forward to you visiting our establishment. And obviously i will be giving my pub a 10 rating!

popped in for a quick pint whilst in portishead (Moles Double Mild - nice) seems to be refurbishment work going on here too, a high quality refit has been done on one half of the pub, and staff inform me that the bar will be refurbished to the same standard during the winter. look forward to seeing it!

A pub with a chequered recent history which finally seems, over the last couple of years, to be finally getting it right.

The ale range is pretty good - Butcombe and Doombar along with at least one guest; quality is usually of a good standard.

The big selling point here is the view - a nice pint on a sunny day in the beer garden overlooking the Severn towards the bridges and the Welsh coast is rather nice...also, you can take your beer down to the little pebble beach inlet through the garden gate.

The pubs interior also deserves a mention - there's some lovely tiled areas and a nice atmosphere when busy (although can feel deathly quiet when not).

Only real downside is the price - you're paying an extra 30-odd pence for the venue in which you're imbibing. There's food available (never sampled though).

Should you be visiting a rich relative in the Marina complex, make sure you pop over, it's worth it I think.

Visited on a busy bank holiday weekend, nice large outside seating area with views over the water. Staff seemed very polite and freindly, and food was excellent and obviously home cooked.
I would be keen to try some of the other dishes as they sound delicious. Sampled a glass of thatchers gold (my favorite) and a well kept pint of Moles Best (a rarity to be seen in this area). very positive experience.

What a Lovely pub! I spent all day in the garden in the beautiful spring sunshine sipping on a pint looking out on the Severn. Wasn't planning to eat there, but decided to in the end and WOW was I glad I did. The food was excellent, I had the best Lamb Shanks I've ever eaten. Extremely friendly staff too, never had such an all round good experience. Keep up the good work The Royal! Thanks

Have visited this pub over the years and seen it improve to what it is today. The modern marina developments have seen the clientel and the menu change with increase in prices. The gardens have great views over the Severn Estuary to Wales.Very busy on a sunny afternoon lucky to find a place to sit. Choice of ales and lagers well kept. My favourite in Portishead but I am a tourist.( The Gents Toilet is at the top of the building ,a long long climb).

I have been to eat here a few times, and each time have recieved great service, the food was delicious, and many thanks to the staff for attending to my very fussy needs! The menu has a wide variety of dishes and i'll defintely be back to try out some more favourites from the menu. Looking even more so to sitting out in the garden area in the summer with a pint of cider and a great meal.

well, now have popped back, but can,t say that my initial impression has changed,it was very quiet, considering the time of day, staff seem to appear/disappear as if by will, rather than hover in the background ready to serve.

Since new management took over this pub a year ago it has really turned into an excellent pub, good food and great choice of cask ales. Thumbs up!

The Royal does excellent food very well priced, the chef cooks everything from fresh and takes great pride in his work and it shows. The wine is drinkable and the beer is very good.

The great thing about this pub is the garden and the views over the channel, with a walkway down to a pebble beach, it's a great pub for a sunny day.
