user reviews of the Dog and Bone, Lincoln

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's always great to come across an uncomplicated backstreet boozer in a tourist town and this is the archetype albeit with a well above average range of ales (mainly from Lincolnshire's Bateman's Brewery and impeccably kept). Activities advertised above the bar include pub walks, barbecues and quizzes - all adding up to a super community pub. Apart from my Bateman's Gold, my partner in crime enjoyed a half of Oakham's JHB.

The Dog and Bone in Lincoln is with out a doubt one of the best pubs that I have ever been to. We were enjoying a day out in Lincoln on Saturday and, being conscientious and clever types we did a bit of research and decided upon the Dog and Bone as our lunch time watering hole.

The pub was not, as the guide stated, at the north west corner of the cathedral complex, but some 10 minutes walk (I know, it could have been worse), far from the main drag in a neighbourhood reminiscent of Coronation Street. Tucked away down a small, residential road it would be easy to miss. Having found it though, more fool you should you chose to walk on by!

The front door leads you in a very comfortable lounge bar. Book shelves dominate this space crammed with everything from Mills and Boon to the OED. Round the other side of the bar one finds four excellent beers, and a quality pint of Bateman's.

Definitely one for the todo list.

Tucked away in an unremarkable backstreet in a slightly neglected part of town, this has always been a great pub. Having visited for the first time in a decade it was great to see that if anything it is even better these days. Beautifully kept Bateman's beer, a cosy and relaxing atmosphere, lovely beer garden and very pleasant staff.

A fine pub in a fine city for pubs.

Batemans pub with guest ales in the backstreets of Lincoln. It's a fairly small pub and was very quiet on our Saturday afternoon visit. They were just concluding a beer festival. Moorhouses White Mist, Batemans XXXB & XB, York Red Hot, Derby Triple Hop & Black Sheep were the ales. Westons Celebration Cider was also on. Nice enough pub that is worth the walk from the centre.

Didn't realise that this pub had won CAMRA community pub of the year before visiting it. Can see why it did. The beer was well kept and the 2 roomed pub was cosy with 2 blazing fires and everything everything polished and ship-shape without being sterile and antiseptic. The beer was well kept - Batemans - and although we didn't have time to try the food there was a good choice and it looked ok. Well worth the walk out of Lincoln centre - quite pleasant to walk up by the waterside too.

One Bad Goth Den, start by counting the letters.

Dog and Bone is an anagram of One Bad Goth Den? I don't think that's possible according my limited knowledge of the English language.

But did you know that the name is an anagram of One Bad Goth Den, now thats a bit unfair I know. .....

lovely since it's been taken over and done up! some good bands on now, not your typical loud pub band, but people who can actually sing! BRING BACK DAVE MALLET & FRIENDS!!!

Learn to spell - surely you mean cliquey. And surely most local pubs are as they are dependent on their locals for their main income. There are a lot of locals at the Dog and for some reason, dispite being a disparate lot, we all seem to get on rather well (at least to each other's faces). However, I do believe the vast majority of the locals are very very welcome. There are no "who are you" stares. No cold shoulders. Usually, someone says something friendly to break the ice (I know I often do) and any sign of friendliness from someone who is new is usually reciprocated.

Aren't all pubs overpriced - apart from Wetherspoons where the beer is knocking on the door of past its best before date.

over priced and clicky.

New management has revitalised this pub and enhanced it's relaxing atmosphere. There's always a genuinely warm welcome and the beer's always well kept. One of Lincoln's best pubs.

Under new management of a friendly, welcoming, forward looking couple. Very friendly atmosphere with mix of different ages as customers. Beer is excellent. They have also introduced a well stocked book swap scheme.

Just as good as ever, and new management have avoided unnecessesary renovation, brewery geting a bit greedy but lets hope they let this bit of real pub gets left alone a lot longer.

This is a fantastic little pub, its as if someone has picked it up ut of the country side and dropped it in the town. the landlady & landlord are very welcoming and friendly, and i am realiably told by my other half the beer is spot on, i know that the shorts are! good luck to them, you can see the work and effort that goes into it.
jemimapuddleduck - 2 Jun 2006 22:15
The landlord has suspicious sideburns, but the welcome is lovely and the beer first class. Go and visit this top class pub!!
NotoriousGRD - 27 May 2006 22:27
Under new management - beer just as good and the welcome and atmosphere is even better.

Currently under threat by a change of use application so letters to the relevant authorities welcome.

My favourite pub in Lincoln and also my local. The beer is excellent (best Bateman's XB in Lincoln) and the Casque Mark is well deserved. Regular beers Bateman's XB & XXB, geust Bateman's Beer (Mild or Porter) and guest beers. Great beer, friendly atmosphere (new or old). What more could anybody ask for?

Just off Monks Rd, Real nice unspoilt Batemans pub mixed crowd, mainly over 25, never crowded, always OK tasteful low impact music. Pub to meet, enjoy well kept real ales and have a natter.
