My 4th pub on Tuesday and I really liked this one. It was very busy for a Tuesday lunchtime, mainly with foreign tourists dining. I didn't notice anybody else drinking the ales from the house Moulin brewery. There were 4 of these - Old Remedial, Ale of Atholl, Braveheart & Moulin Light. The pub is a wonderful little building dating back to the 17th century, with plenty of beams and low ceilings. Just outside Pitlochry, it's well worth a visit.

I can confirm that the ales brewed here are available at the Atholl Arms in Blair Atholl which is under the same ownership and the food menus are also very similar. Both premises are highly recommended by me and if you have time to spare I can also recommend a tour (and the products) of the Edradour distillery.

Situated in the beautiful village of Moulin, just outside Pitlochry and at the foot of Ben Vrackie. Nice old building serving ales from their own brewery across the road. These were obviously in good condition but lacked a certain something in taste - they had a touch of the "home brew" about them.
There is bar food: nothing too special but decent enough portions, possibly a bit dear for what it was. Many tourists when I visited in the summer, outnumbering the locals. I believe there is an adjacent restaurant in another part of the building but I didn't visit it.
Pleasant enough place, and probably better than the venues on Pitlochry high street, but not worth travelling from afar.

I've been using this pub since the early 1990s, as it has a splendid position close to the A9 and ready for the walk up Ben Vrackie. Comfortable cubby-holes, a very good range of food and at least five beers from the house brewery. I was delighted to stop by again recently and found the quality up to previous visits. I noticed some reference to these beers being available also in the Bothy Bar of the Atholl Arms Hotel (Blair Atholl) but wasn't able to confirm that.

Popped in for a 'couple' on a quiet midweek evening, and though the place was almost empty, this was still a cracking pub. Four real ales were on offer from it's own brewery, all were tried, and all were good, but especially the strong, 'Old Remedial'. It could perhaps improve with a guest ale, but the open real fire added atmosphere and the staff were friendly, if just a bit too keen to clean up at the end of the night whilst we were still there.
This place is a good place to visit and worth the 15 minute walk up the hill from the centre of Pitlochry - The best pub in the area by far.

I agree (though to split hairs I would point out 'whisky' is Scottish and 'whiskey' is Irish). I had the Moulin Light, the Braveheart and the Old Remedial, which were all very good. Cracking lunch too- no wonder it was pretty rammed for a Monday. Lovely building with hanging baskets, etc.

just returned from a wonderfull week staying opposite the moulin inn. visited everyday, and would keep visiting if i was there longer.

the moulin inn's own brewed beers are great, especially the Braveheart. and as with any decent pub in scotland, the whiskey selection was extensive, including the local edradour whiskeys.

the staff were wonderfull, especially a chap from bristol, who made us feel so welcome. all the staff put up with us idiot tourists trying the whiskeys and trying our scottish acents.

food was decent, some dishes more than others. the battered haggis starter was sublime and the veggies amongst us loved the macaroni cheese. the atmosphere in the pub was very good, with a healthy mix of tourists and friendly locals.

the building itslef is a wonderfull 18th century building, really liked the feel of the inside, the bar area was dark and wood lined, and the back eating/drinking area was lined with booths for groups to enjoy themselves in. plenty of stuff othe walls and stained glass making it really comfy.

if you are in pitlochry, this pub is 100% worth the short trip out of town.

I persuaded my other half to walk up the hill from Pitlochry as I assured her that the pub was worth it - she agreed! We sat outside in the weak sunshine and e njoyed their home-brewed beers - the Braveheart being my favourite although the Light was also very good. They are brewed as typically traditional Scottish beers i.e. slightly more malty than many Southern brews but they are excellent and the hotel/bar is set in beautiful countryside with some great views around. If you kept on walking for another mile or so you would come to Scotland's smallest distillery at Edradour but if you like your beer - and some interesting food - then you will be hard pushed to beat The Moulin !! Highly recommended.

A walk in wonderful hills with spectacular views was ended with a pint ( or two ) of Old Remedial by the fire.
You may know of better beer in a better surrounding, but I don't.
It could only be improved by giving it away....

What a great hotel/bar. I tried the local Moulin Brewery beers, outstanding. I love this place. Very highly recommended. 9/10 from me.

We visited the Moulin Inn for lunch. The food tasted a bit off, and the beer wasn't anywhere near as good as we had hoped, but the pub itself has some character and it's in a nice spot.

Good pub - real ale from Moulin brewery next door - best pub in Pitlochry

We dropped by every day for a pint or three while staying just up the road. I found the standard of the beer varied day by day, from outstanding to below average - my favourite of the ales was Braveheart, although the quality of the brew seemed heavily dependent on who was pulling the pint. It's a friendly, cosy pub with customers from all over the world. The food's pretty good too - their steak and ale pie was excellent value and bursting with chunks o' beef. Just the thing after tackling Ben-y-Vrackie. I'd definately return.

This is an attractive pub up the hill from Pitlochry which, as has been said, brews its own beer. In truth, my companions and I only really liked two of the four beers: Moulin Light and Ale of Atholl (the first and third by strength). The other two had slightly odd flavours. We also ate: my lamb shank was very good but the fish and chips were less good with rather small portions of so-so chips. So a mixed experience but I'd definitely go back. Also a kindly couple offered us a lift 2 miles back to our B&B which gave a nice end to things.

I really liked this pub, it had a nice feel to it and the staff were very friendly. The beer was well kept, I only tried the Braveheart but it was a canny pint. Sandwiches were good and the hot food looked ok too. I could have easily stayed there all afternoon.

I han a pint of their own brew "Moulin Light" which was a nice hoppy bitter.

Service was very slow on a Saturday afternoon, which seem to have followed a busy lunchtime. Glases were in short supply and a couple of coffees were placed on the bar for delivery to a table and left to get cold!

My husband and I visited this pub while on holiday for a week with our dog and loved it, a real cosy friendly place with delicious food.

I could be cruel and point out that when I walked in for my weekday lunchtime visit, it looked like a coachload of pensioners were just finishing their lunch.

But it's certainly a popular place - only one table with room for two people available around 2pm. It's also got a bit of atmosphere, with cosy booths and a more bar-orientated area near the bar. I imagine it's even more atmospheric at night.

The on-site brewery adds massively to its appeal, without this, I wouldn't actually go out of my way for it. I sampled the Braveheart and the Light Ale. Of the two, I prefered the Braveheart. The fact that the beer was brewed on the spot definitely added to the appeal.

It's set in a nice village, with a village museum across the road - making it easy to spend a pleasant afternoon in the area.

I recently visited and this pub is well worth the detour off the A9, they had for ales on, all from their own brewery and all tasting rather good. I'm surprised that it isn't in the 2007 Good Beer Guide, lucky for me that I packed the wrong edition when I visited Scotland or I may have missed this gem.
Tweeky - 13 May 2007 11:46
I enjoyed this pub greatly. Fine home brewed ale's which are brewed next door (informative tour too). Didn't try the food but it looked excellent. Particularly liked the Braveheart ale.

This is nothing short of a fantastic pub - the best in Scotland IMHO. I adore the local beer the food is perfect after a hike around the hills and its a warm and cosy pub - just perfect!

I have to agree with Siansaturns comment that even thought the ales were brewed next door they didnt knock my socks off. The Braveheart was probably my favourite but I felt like the tourist I was asking for it. The food was good; maybe hearty is the word Im looking for. Most of the Blue Rinse Brigade at the tables near us at lunch didnt come close to finishing their meals.
Good to see Pub Skittles instead of a pool table. When we were in they were adding logs to the fire at an alarming rate, both rooms were toasty so maybe Siansaturn had different bar staff with thicker skins.
It's a good old pub.
pezza132 - 5 Dec 2006 16:48
This pub's in the Good Pub Guide so I had high expectations. The beer might be brewed next door but it's very sugary - I tried two different beers and neither were very pleasant. It was a cold evening and they were unwilling to put more logs on the fire, confirming for my English boyfriend that all Scots are tight.
The fish and chips were delicious though and they have a good range of whisky.

Welcoming {ub with good value food and wide menu choice. Beers from own Moulin Brewery good & kept well, particularly "Braveheart."

Good food, fantastic ale, warm friendly atmosphere. Quite a steep walk up the hill from town, but a nice gentle stroll down after a gallon of Braveheart
alewhale - 26 Jun 2005 14:47
Fantastic atmosphere, low ceilings with wooden beams, open fireplace, locals and their dogs, and of course Braveheart!
anonymous - 7 Jun 2005 23:50
Historic coaching inn with its own brewery - excellent food, log fires - try a pint of Braveheart!
