Yes I agree it's revolting in here there are much better pubs my favourite for a great night is the Bottle fun for all the family, give it a try!

Totally agree with the previous comment! This place has much potential and with the much better Bottle House and Spotted Dog just up the road you'd think they'd at least try and compete. Sadly, the beer, the food, the decor and the ambience is below average which is a shame for a pub in such an affluent village as Penshurst. Can only assume that as it's the only pub in the village itself, they purely rely on visitors to nearby Penshurst place and passing trade. I can't imagine how it would survive in a larger town with closer competition.

Visited a week ago and won't be going back. We arrived for a late lunch and took ages to process the orders. We were told that the fish on the fish sandwich was breaded but when it came it was battered and very greasy... we couldn't eat it all. My friend ordered a brownie for dessert but after waiting a while I asked at the bar - the kitchen hadn't got the order so we left. It was all very disorganised and I hate to think how they would cope with a rush... it all seemed very grubby, especially en route to the toilets. Such a shame to have a third rate dive in such a lovely village... they must rely on passing trade as they clearly don't care about developing regular custom.

On the few occasions i have been here the bitter has been in poor condition,
This and a general air of shabbiness and disinterest means i won't be returning for the foreseeable future

We have been eating here probably once a quarter for a year or two. Food reasonable, beer good, atmosphere in the pub excellent, but less so in the restaurant part (too mock- 'trad' country pub). The themed food evenings are a good idea and they do good decs at Christmas and Halloween.

However the carpets are grim and the gents diabolical. It shouldn't be too expensive to fix these.......

absoluted dive . one wonders why they would let this pub run down so much.
you walk in the door to be greated by a carpet that literally sticks to the soles of your feet, as for the loos , must i go on.?

Visited for first time in almost a year last week. Place is still looking a little run down, but somehow it seems to have improved. The beer selection is okay, but it was the food offers on weeknights that caught my eye. The steak night seemed excellent value and for a 16 oz steak with scampi it was just 13.95. The other nights looked great value and I will happily visit again in the summer as so much cheaper than it's sister pub at Bough Beech which never seems to change it's menu and is a little over priced.

Good, traditional pub but did see one customer have trouble as the one barmaid assidiusly looked everywhere except where he was and the one whose attention he did attract didn'r speak English. However I did enjoy my Harvey's and the atmoshere was good.

Have been visiting on and off for fifty years, and it's never changed. That includes the decor.
The beer is fine, and if you go on a sunny day it's nice to quaff a pint in the back garden. But the interior is almost Kafkaesque in its anonymity and drabness.
As someone has already said, it could be SO much better.

Had on Harveys, Master Brew, Bombardier, and Spitfire. Not every pub is going to be a prize winner and this is one of those but theres certainly nothing wrong with it, or the beer.

The same owners as the Wheatsheaf at Bough Beech, but whereas that pub is very good this place is run down and characterless.

Visited this pub yesterday and I was a bit disappointed really. It looks fabulous from the outside, but the interior is drab and dated. This sounds strange when the building dates back to Tudor times, but it lacks imagination and is desparately in need of a spruce up.
The food was average. I had lamb chops with veg and mash - I suspect that the mash was actually Smash. There were three menu sheets on each table, which made them look a bit scruffy.
I was suprised that the bar staff left empty plates in front of us for so long because they wern't busy at all. I was also suprised that they didn't enquire as to whether wanted a pudding when they did clear them. They missed a sale because they sounded very appetising - very English, home made ice creams and stodgy puddings served with custard - yum yum.
On the positive side, the Harveys was good and the toilet was clean.
Overall it was like eating in an old peoples home no atmosphere.
It's worth a visit, but it could be an awful lot better.

Lovely old pub and a fine pint of Harvey's. Popped in during a muddy bike ride and no one objected to our attire. Loved the corridor to the Gents. It was like the Great Escape.

Msprunt - that should of course be Stowford Press Cider. My stepfather is partial to cider and usually finds there's not much option other than Strongbow. This one he did appreciate.

4 of us stopped for a drink, about 4 miles into a circular walk from Tonbridge, last Sunday afternoon. Although I've been to and through Penshurst many times either walking or for the Craft Fair in the grounds of Penshurst Place, I'd never been to the pub.

The Harveys Best Bitter, Stowford Press Bitter, and a glass of rioja all went down well though the drinks did seem a bit pricey. We didn't have any food, but from what we could see from nearby tables people were enjoying themselves.

A very nice building and some decent beers. Worth making the trip to. There's a carpark and seating tables around the back overlooking fields.

A beautiful village with gorgeous half timbered Tudor houses and an ancient churchyard - but this pub ever so slightly wastes these natural advantages with its kaleidoscopic carpet and general air of worn fatigue. The tables out front would be well placed if people were disallowed from stationing their people carriers right in front of them.

Overdue a revamp - but when it comes, I hope they don't overdo it.

Agree with the the previous correspondent's description of the pub. I didn't eat here but enjoyed one of the two Westerham Brewery's beers on offer. The other beers on offer were Shepherd Neame's Master Brew and the ubiquitous London Pride. So all in all a good choice of 3 local and 1 national ales. Found the staff to be very attentive and helpful. Would definitely consider eating here, prices notwithstanding. I think that before you step inside you'd realise this place wouldn't be cheap!

A beautiful building in a charming village, home to a sllightly pretentious but all the same worthwhile pub. The ales are not always the most interesting, but are doubtless well-served. Notwithstanding the comments about the food below, the single time I ate here I found the meal to be perfectly acceptable, if a little pricey. Service could've been better; it seemed as if there was only 2 or 3 people at the bar yet it took almost 10 minutes to place an order! Maybe we were unlucky on that occasion.
Could be better, but certainly not bad.

This is a nice looking pub in a fantastic location, good selection of beer and wines (although a little pricey) with the lovely Stowford Press cider on tap, the problem with this pub is the food, it claims to be homemade but it obviously is not, you can tell by the indentations from the wrappers still on the food, not that it isn't edible, but to pay 9.95 for a store bought Steak and Kidney pudding is a joke!

Fantastic village pub with great food and a good selection of ales, including Harveys.
