please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Star was our third pub of the day (the New Inn at Bwlch is not listed on here). It also turned out to be the best of the day. Situated in a very nice village with a canal running behind it, this is a deservedly popular pub with a decent range of ales. A selection of 6 is seemingly good for this area - Malt Starry Nights, Dark Star American Pale Ale, Roosters Eighty Eight, Orkney Red Macgregor, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber & Oakham Inferno. The number of pumpclips on the walls show just how many ales this pub has got through. They also had a cider (Gwynt y Ddraig Happy Daze) and a perry (Lilleys Crazy Goat). There seemed to be quite a few from Yorkshire. There is plenty of seating in different areas inside and there is a garden to the rear too, with steps leading up to the canal. Lots of people were enquiring about food. So the pub clearly has a very good reputation. Dogs are welcome. But it currently has a for sale notice up. So hopefully it won't be lost. Parking in the village is difficult.

A deserved winner of local Camra pub of the year yet again by the looks of the signs outside - and inside you can see why: a friendly welcome, good food and good beer are to be found here - and a good Wednesday night quiz to boot. Will come back if in the area again.

If I were you I’d work up a thirst by walking along a stretch of the Brecon and Monmouth canal then dive into this lovely old boozer for a refreshing pint or six. I love this place. There is always a good selection of real ales on tap. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. It’s always a wrench to leave. Looking forward to returning there next month.

Probably one of the best pubs in Britain.

Good pub with good ales and good food. Dog friendly as well. We always call in when in the area. Shame that they don't sell Moles Black Rat Cider anymore..........Bring Back Black Rat!!!! Please

This is a very well run, friendly pub with decent food.
I drop in every time I'm in the area.
The beers change regularly and are well kept, the beer festivals are great fun with good live music and a vast array of well priced ale!
This pub is cycle friendly, with helpful chatty staff.
Good work fellas!

We visited on a hot Sunday at lunch time. Charming staff, lovely pub (slightly 'down-at-heel' outside) but great PUB inside. The beer was perfect, some unpronounceable summer ale from a local brewer, and my wife so enjoyed her white wine & soda she had a second. We sat in the peaceful garden, almost under the aquaduct, and were served the Sunday roast lamb and fish 'n'chips. My wife, who has eaten fish'n'chips in some of the best resaurants in the world, felt moved to tell the staff that the batter was the best she had ever tasted!! As for my lamb, the clean plate told the story.
Thoroughly recommended on all counts, the sort of pub that deserves your support

I worked in this pub nearly 20 years ago. It was great then, and is still great! Wonderful selection of ales from all over the country, most from small breweries. Friendly staff, and a great beer garden at the rear.

A great pub. Visited Monday 27/7/09, mid-afternoon-ish.

Good selection of ales, but felt like living dangerously so ordered a pint of Moles Black Rat Cider, on draught.

Pub was obviously fairly quiet at that time of day (and on a Monday) but there were a few customers dotted around.

Barman was friendly and knowledgeable. Pub is very traditional with few frills but bags of atmosphere.

Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

Excellent pub,Punch Taverns house(ugh!) but the landlord takes advantage of the concessions he gets by having good ale. Rhymney was on on my visit so thats 10/10 straight away. Sells Penderyn Welsh whisky from over the hill, yum at 1.70 I think. Attentive and welcoming staff. Friendly natives. Worthy of a visit.

How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire?
The cider, the pies, the benches and stools, the always-roaring fire.

I LIKE this pub.

What a good pub should be. This pub just has 'it', that special something that sets it apart from most other boozers. Stayed for two nights, and couldnt fault a thing. Accomodation, food and beer were were fantastic value and quality and landlord Ian was the perfect host. Sat by the roaring log fire, playing the pub board games, working my way through the 6 ales after a long walk in the beacons...was just heaven.

A real gem! Great real ale range often including a stout or other dark beer. Food is good, especially their delicious curries. Always get a warm welcome, it is one of those home from home pubs. Treasure it.

Visited the Star on Saturday lunchtime.....beer in good condition and a decent selection, friendly reception, but the pub itself was a little cold and drafty.
Cheese and pickle roll at 2.50 was only average value.
Didn't see the beer garden, but there was no need to on a frosty Feb midday.
Would visit again if in the area.

Been a fan of the Star for many years but Ian, the Landlord, has steadily improved the place since he took over without altering it's old world charm. Very friendly and food is excellent with many home-made specials served.
Usually 6 real ales/cider in good form and these change very regularly. Nice garden alongside river.
Ideal place to end up at after a hard walk on the Beacons.

Lovely pint of Rhymney Dark. Great pub/location.

Great traditional pub. Excellent selection of real ales, (we tried four of the ones that were on between us). Food was freshly prepared, was good quality and value. Guy behind the bar was very welcoming and had a good knowledge of the beers he was serving,(he estimated that they have about 300 different real ales on over a year and the pump clips decorating the pub did nothing to contadict this). Well worth visiting, we will certainly go out of our way to call in next time we are in the area.

very pleasantly surprised. Excellent village pub with large number of real ales and ciders. Landlord has the right attitude, very helpful, enjoyed the pub food (home made).Large open fire. A village pub in a good village beside the river and canal used by locals and visitors alike. Cannot recommend more highly,

One of my all-time favourite pubs, always a good selection of real ales and a nice beer garden if it's not raining! Ideal place to end up after a walk in the nearby hills.
