amazing pub food! pleasant surprise. no menu outside but asked at the bar. we had a cheese and onion panini and a spinanch and ricotta bake, was delicious! lovely fresh salad with peppers and homemade coleslaw, only £4 each. asked for a portion of chips, was huge, great value for money, will definitely be back there for lunch!

A decent pub with some real ales on. Not as atmospheric as the Salutation next door but worth a visit.

Only ever seen five ales on during my visits, and I have to say the quality can be a bit hit and miss. OK.

Popped in last month, 5 out of 10 handpumps were on offer, they offer a scheme too where you get a card and when you collect 7 stamps your 8th pints is on the house. the sexy barmaid and the tasty pint of bluemonkey "BG Sips" certainly got my vote...........7/10

Improved 100% since my last visit! A change of hands has done something for this pub. Keep up the good work and keep on offering lots of different beers!

The Royal Children for me had always been wasted, over the past years I have visited this pub I have always left dissapointed with the beer and service.

This has thankfully now all changed, a recent change in landlord has turned this pub round in dramatic fashion. The 10 ale pumps that where once nothing more than ornaments other than 1 or 2 token ales have now been completely overhauled, on our visit the following beers where available.

Thornbridge - Jaipur (5.9%)
Thornbridge - Kipling (5.2%)
Thornbridge - Brother Rabbit (3.7%)
Blue Monkey - 99 red baboons (4.2%)
Blue Monkey - Guerrilla (4.9%)
Caledonian - Deuchars (3.8%)
Theakston - Old Peculier (5.6%)
Oakham - Baja (4.3%)

Prices varied from 1.99 for the Deuchars up to 2.75 for the Jaipur.

After sampling the beer and taking into account the landlord is still 'new' I can see this easily being Nottingham CAMRA pub of the year 2010 if it can keep this pace up.

This pub has never "Done" anything for me! Not much choice of beer. Quiet pub. Discount for CAMRA members though!

After a few visits, this place has grown on me. Good selection of well kept ales; friendly landlord who knows his beer.

Visited on a Friday night and there was a real mix of locals/goths and who knows who! I always liked the "feel" of this place, these days it is selling excellent Deuchars.

Since being under new ownership, it has improved dramatically. I regularly enjoy a pint there. It has some good local bands and has a lively fun environment.

Thera, that is a great pub review. Never saw the noisy american at the bar, always found enough noisy brits in there to be honest.

A few visits back when we were here an American was sitting at the bar and he was quite loud. I am an American myself and felt the need to keep a low profile. On a later visit the same guy was there again, still just as loud. Our last visit there was a set of rules next to the bar about how Americans should behave while in the bar. The American was missing; have no idea where he was. I found it quite funny but still kept a low profile. Americans should learn to turn the volume down and keep most of their opinions to themselves and drink their beer quietly.

Went in here last Friday and am now going to have to sell a kidney to pay the mortgage. How the hell can they justify 2.60 for a pint of warm Deuchars ?
It's outrageous and has certainly put me off visiting here again.
Next time I'm in the area I'll go to the Trip.

Good friendly real ale pub with great food, can get a bit smokey though when its busy.

A bit grotty and smells of the previous evenings' bodily fluids but OK bordering on to average for this type of pub.
Popular with pierced nose and Celtic tattoo types.
Bar staff very friendly.

Lovely pub, opposite the castle, goes well back, apparently gets it's name as the the children of the royals in the castle used to play with the landlords children.
Very spacious and cool in hot weather

There seems to be a short measures policy in here, it's happened to me on several occasions. Apart from that its ok.
palmwinedrinkard - 11 Jun 2004 13:47
One room city centre pub that tries to service all types of customer. They do 3 or 4 cask ales and wine by the bottle.

Sometimes thay have a live band on
