user reviews of the New Crown, Southgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

What can I say yes its cheap needs to be its about the only thing in its favour. Ale quality is not a patch on what it was a few years ago the current management don't seem to have the skill to keep it in good order. Plus Trying to get served in here is a joke most the time as staff never know who is next even when they do they prefer to just blank you and serve people they know. Not one of the best run spoons and its too dull and dreary. Prefer Turnpike Lane or Palmer's Green ones.

Second Wetherspoons of the day and this one is most likely a shop conversion, with a large single room. The Tally Ho in North Finchley did at least have a little character with different rooms. Ales were Ruddles Best, Jennings The World's Biggest Liar, Cotswold Spring OSM, Adnams Ghost Ship, Itchen Valley QED & Hampshire Rose & Greene King Abbot. Cider was Westons Wyld Wood & Cider Twist Mulled Cider.

I came in here on the way to football in Cockfosters on Thursday evening, my first visit to Southgate and to this ‘spoons.

It was pretty busy at 6.15pm when I walked in. 2 bar man ready and waiting to serve me my selection from the 10 hand pumps on the bar which were dispensing 10 different beers...my choices were Everards Original @ 5.2% and Saint Archer (USA) Pale Ale @ 5.5%.

Both pints were excellent and as always with Wetherspoon’s you cannot fault the prices.

This is an older style spoons, it’s friendly, has quick service is in a great location being close to the station so for me all in all it's a very decent option for a pint or 2.

Thursday night is curry night and the food looked better than your normal ‘spoons fair….I like this pub and will return as my football match was postponed.

Well what can I say we used to go here a lot after work for a few drinks and occasionally some food but the standard of service has gone down hill rapidly it appears in the past year most the pleasant polite and well trained staff have left and gone elsewhere. Now all that’s left is mostly the ill mannered staff that just stands there looking pretty. Most don’t even have a clue who’s next or have any idea how to pull a pint of Ale because there scared they might break a Nail. Whilst I don’t expect perfect manners a please or thank you wouldn’t go a miss now and then.

Have to agree with the last poster - this place has really deteriorated in recent months. The tables are never cleaned and there are some staff (plump girl/blonde ponytail) who consistently serve short pints and then start harrumphing when you ask for a top-up.

It's a sad state of affairs when the only place for miles around that serves anything other than GK IPA/Pride/DoomBar/Abbott etc is a decaying Wetherspoons.

Since my last review this place has gone down hill again terribly worse that it was a few years ago. All the good staff have left only to be replaced by unskilled Kids of around 18-19 Most seem to have no experience of keeping or serving a good Ale the cellerman must have gone to another Pub as the quality of Ales is nowhere as good now. Also why the last few times I've been in here is there a overpowering stench of bleach emanating from behind the bar so bad it even taints the beer. Definitely cant recommend this place any more until there's a change of management.

I must say this place has improved vastly over the last year or so. Theres always a very good selection of Ales on tap and a fast turn over of Guest Ales meaning there always in good condition. Staff are always very pleasant and getting served has improved vastly very rarely have to wait unless its busy. Just shows what a good management team can do. Well recommended for a visit if passing. The food service in this one seems good as well fast and no long waits I had nice extra large mixed grill very good. The other good points I noticed is tables are also cleared & cleaned quickly when customers are finished eating Rather then dirty crocks left laying around for ages.

went in on a sunday afternoon soon got served a pint of abbot which was ok. being sunday i decided to try the sunday club. i had the pork roast which was ok, considering that some of spoons food is not the best.it was not busy so got served easily on both times at the bar. a reasonable spoons

I went in here on Friday evening too see if its improved any since my last visit No such luck. I waited nearly 10 Minuets too get served the first time whilst three of the staff collected glasses bottled up of served food even though there was a Que of customers four deep at the bar. Too make matters worse they were mostly Young kids buying multi coloured jugs of cocktails taking ages. Why is it that Wetherspoons make big Pubs but never have enough staff too serve all the customers. Out of ten Pumps there was only two guest Ales on tap the rest were all showing coming soon apart from Abbot & Ruddles very poor show for a Friday evening. I was going too get a second Pint but after I queued for about another 10 minuets I gave up and went elsewhere. I would not recommend this Pub at weekends as it always seems to be full of young loud student types of 18 if that.

Average Spoons, agree with half tuppence, staff are very slow at serving. I was waiting to be served, and then the barmaid started up a conversation with someone next to me she had just served.
Tubeboy - 30 Oct 2010 08:25
A large open plan Spons pub. Usually has four guest beers . Some

concerns have been expressed by regulars over the new manager

who seems to lack the commitment of her predecessors to maintaining

the range and quality of the real ales.

The good Manager that was here Has now left to work at the new Wheatsheaf in Borough A good Ale house as I'm reliably Informed by another CAMRA Member.

Sadly the Ale quality in here seems too have deteriorated quiet dramatically in the last few weeks on two occasions Ive had too return Pints and to cap it of last Thursday All guest Ales run out and were not replaced even though It was Early Evening and there was a large Group of us Having a CAMRA meeting so plenty would have been sold when we Asked the Duty Manager Why He basically said is too late not worth bothering till tomorrow.

Yes not a bad Wetherspoons this one. I think would and could do even better If some of the Staff spent more time serving customers instead of just collecting glasses or Bottling up theres always far too long spent waiting at the bar trying to get severed when you have a few People ordering food Ive walked out a few times after waiting well over 10 Minuets.
But apart from that the food is good and the Real Ales are always in good condition with some excellent choice of Ales.
Just dont go in there Friday or Saturday as is full of very younger drinkers.

half_tuppence - 18 Feb 2009 21:53
Have to agree with the last two reviews. Pub has turned a corner with reagrds to its ales. Had a pint of Thwaites Good Elf in here and it was excellent.
sideshowbob - 3 Jan 2009 13:59
Seems too be on the up again lately with much better choice of Ales and the staff and service seems too have improved no end with well manned & polite staff . I Was in on Wed &Thurs Nights and it seemed much better no wait at the bar and food was served within 10 minuets of ordering. Just shows what difference a good duty manager makes. I would agree with Half Tuppence on that point.
Alesonly - 28 Nov 2008 23:50
I would have to agree with some of the other comments made recently this is not too bad for a Wetherspoons but it Dose seem to depend on the Duty Manager & Time of day. Sometimes during the week theres a really good bar manager on duty thats very good with Staff & Knows all about Ale takes time to talk to customers and is happy to help. Other times normally Fri Sat nights theres a big grumpy guy who seem very impolite & standoffish and who seem to have no time for Ale drinkers this always seems to attract the wrong sort of crowd of younger drinkers Fridays & Saturday nights maybe because its busier and theres not the same checks carried out.
Overall its a good Pub & the Food is good during the week but I would Avoid it on Friday & Saturday Nights after about 18:00 hrs as it seems to get Full of very young drinkers Most of which seem to have child or 16-17 travel cards when you watch them go back though Southgate Tube Stn.
This situation seems to be made worse by the fact that they seem to get served Large Jugs of Alcopops all night.

Its a Wetherspoons pub so the usual old men are dotted about this huge open plan pub staring into space with their pint of bitter. There is a plasma screen in a little alcove which was showing sky news, but I dont think that they have sky sports. It is not the greatest place to position a TV for lots of people to watch so Id imagine it is there for people who like to watch the news whilst they get drunk. Exciting stuff.

The barman was very friendly, but had to be encouraged by his co-worker to stop counting stock and serve one of the four people waiting. When he did serve me he was very polite and friendly.

The usual lagers that you would find in a Spoons pub were on offer with Bombardier, Roaring Meg, Titanic Nautical Mild, Exmoor Gold and Mordue Workie Ticket. Loads of old clips were pinned up on the walls so you could see that they usually have a varied range of bitters.

This isnt that bad a pub except for the fact that it has absolutely no atmosphere, like most wetherspoon pubs.

Been back here A few times in the last four weeks and what a change from six months ago. This was a good Pub run well now its terrible. I have often waited over 10 minuets to get served. last night was no different the first time when I did get served the staff had no manners whatsoever no Please or Thank You. Ordered food & Ale. When I get the Ale it was cloudy and not in good condition at all another regular occurrence lately. The food was half cold when arriving after waiting 30 minuets. Tried again to get A second Pint after waiting over 10 minuets again and watching bar staff just talking to Friends in the corner and serving just them I got browned off and I walked out and will not return until theres a change of Management or Staff. There seems to be a real down turn in Wetherspoons management team lately service is diabolical to Non existent not just in this Pub but most of there Pubs lately. Gone down in my opinion from about 8/10 to 3/10
Alesonly - 26 Feb 2008 21:48
I visited this pub on Thursday, 27 September and found it to be your usual JDW conversion from a large shop. Tended to be a little gloomy even on a bright day mainly due to the low ceiling.

However, it's was better than I expected with 3 guest beers plus the usual regular ones. The service both for food and beer was quick and the staff were very friendly. The gents was reasonably spacious and clean.

I would not hesitate to go back.

Typical Mediocre lookin Spoons but a fantastic pint of ale was had, and fast service.7/10

Another cosy and intimate "Spoons" affair, in the way that an airport departure lounge is cosy and intimate.
Beer is cheap due to it being on the cusp of the sell by date.
Almost opposite McDonalds if you're on the lookout for an establishment with similar atmosphere and I can't think of a better place that embodies all that is Southgate than this appalling pub. Well done!
anonymous - 8 Dec 2006 10:21
I used to work there when I was at uni. Yes it's cheap but you don't want to know half the stuff that goes on behind the bar; if you can't serve yourself (and you can't) then stay away.
big_andy - 10 May 2006 13:30
Probably the cheapest pub in Southgate, wide range of beers from around the world, including Okocim(bottled), Hoegarrden and Leffe(on tap) and some great apple and pear ciders. Has some interesting punters that every time i seem to go there are always gathered around the top corner of the bar, like they have been superglued to the floor.
anonymous - 5 Jan 2006 15:14
I frequent this place regularly. Good beer (but more off pints than you might get elsewhere) and cheap. Food is okay. Well enough run, nothing especially to commend or condemn it, apart from the cheap beer and convenience of the location as a meeting place.

And the beer is cheap. Did I mention that?
HartleyHare - 25 Mar 2005 19:55
Packed full of kids and the local riff raff. Waiting times for a drink is just silly. Full of young kids as well. Stay well away.
DennisBeer - 19 Jan 2005 12:36
General atmosphere is ok although it can get a bit loud at times.
The manager on the door tends to have a bit of a sour face and can be quite rude. However the drinks are cheap and ive always gotten really good service from some of the other managers.
anonymous - 18 Jun 2004 21:58
Go for the food alone. One seriously hot kitchen Manager who definitely knows how to nuke the food to perfection. Drinks cheap enough, atmosphere not bad, staff on the whole friendly.
