user reviews of the Park Tavern, Southfields

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub is one of the most beautiful in the area, with a traditional feel and incredibly welcoming staff.

We recently held one of our charity fundraisers at The PT and nothing was too much trouble for the team - they were organised, conscientious and kept smiling on what was a busy and very warm night!

The venue itself is decorated with wood pannelling, which makes for a rustic, old school feel. Both gardens (front and back) are well-kept, with an undercover area for when it gets too hot (so rarely in London!). There's plenty of seating and it seems like they're fairly busy as there's often reservation signs on the tables.

The food is just what you'd expect - good, honest pub food. Perhaps the menu could be a little more inventive but at least you know what you're getting. This summer's additions of salads and more seasonal dishes was a welcome change, though their burgers and pizzas are still delicious.

Definitely one of my local favourites, and perfect for functions and the not so occasional glass of wine!

Have occasionally (a few times a month) popped in over the last 2 years. Best pub in the immediate area (that means Garratt Lane, Merton Road, Southfields tube vicinity, Wandsworth High Street) - if you want something better, then go to Putney, Clapham Junction or N. of Armoury Way.

They have: Symonds Cider (£4.05 I think); Wadsworth 6X; occasionally a 'Walk in the Park' ale and then a guest (nothing too exotic). Well-kept. Has a website (for lager listings).

Best bit of the pub is the large rear beer garden. Gets the early afternoon sun (depending on time of year) and I've always got a seat there. More outdoor seating at the front of the pub by the busy Merton Road.

Only eaten a pizza here and it was fine and reasonably priced (that means a margerita for £6-something). About half the indoors looks like it's primarily for eating but they don't seem to be too worried about 'eating only' (I'm thinking of The Falcon at C.J.). Interior relatively tarted up (but not absurdly so)with leather sofas, flagged floors and wainscot. Somewhere for family or (most) friends.

Staff fine (but impervious to subtle banter). Good quiz night on Wednesday. I think they have special meal deal days.

Not primarily a sports pub but they do show some events (Six Nations at least).

Doesn't get annoying busy on Friday/Saturday nights.

Overall - good pub for a few pints.

Have lived c. 500 yards from this place for over 2 years and never been in. Visited this evening after seeing it positively rated on BITE. Got a friendly hello from behind the bar as we walked in, there's a selection of interesting beers on tap, great wood panelled bar with leather sofas everywhere, and tasty food. Will definitely be back, especially if they get the fires going in the winter...

Great pub - Not sure it's top 5 in the country but nice range of continental lagers and 3 well kept ales. Food excellent and reasonably priced. Nice garden and fireplaces. Will be back.
bigalmafia - 5 Apr 2011 12:53
Great old school boozer. Nice inside and out. Great choice of lagers including Tiger and beer including Wadsworth 6X - love it.

the venerable pt has received a makeover since my last visit and, very surprisingly, it has worked. It's a great pub. The toilets (slightly dodgy before) would now not be out of place in a posh hotel. It's not the cheapest but the wood burner and leather seating make it somewhere to go go out of your way for. will be back when I'm SW london. Post some photos landlord!!

Really good pub. Tiger on tap and great burgers. Job done.

Love this place. Quiznight on weds is brilliant, the food is good and honest and a couple of impresive fireplaces that I hope will be working in winter. Staff all seem to really care about the place which is unusual and a great guy called Gavin seems to be running the show. Only two ales on tap though and the place could do with a lick of paint!
parrygon - 5 Sep 2009 21:38
Great pub! It used to be quite rough but is much improved. Good food including half price burgers on Mondays and the good old pub quiz on Weds, friendly staff too! Well worth a visit!

Had a great night here the other night. Luckily enough to come along on Pizza Thursday to take advantage of the 5 pizza's which was the perfect size. Shame they only have 2 ales on but I loved the place. I'll be back for the quiz on Wednesday and bringing as many people as I can.

This is my local, and feel very lucky as a result. Genuine, friendly bar staff (not always 100% competent, mind you), decent array of beers and good wines. Excellent clientele too. The menu options don't change much, but what they do is very good indeed, especially the burgers and the steak. Pub quiz on Wednesdays is great entertainment too.
luckyken - 7 Oct 2007 18:03
My only criticism of this pub is that they don't text me to remind me it's half-price burger night.
Chief - 25 Jun 2007 17:11
Went to this pub last Wednesday with a group of people. We all agreed not to bother again. I suggest the Youngs pub about 5 minutes along the road - more atmosphere and better range of beers.

After recently relocating to Southfields I have found this bar very welcoming and friendly. The staff are great as the the beer and the burgers are fantastic. Definately a place for a good night out. Music now available on Saturday's and Jazz on Sundays.

Come on you Reds.

I think the new chaps have done a great job here. Good luck to them. Wish they could sort out the nerks who hang around the phone box as well.

Had a friend from Verona and his children and other friends to visit London. Decided to take them to the Park Tavern, Merton Road. We sat in the amazing courtyard garden which is nestled to the back of the building. We drank pimms - adults only of course! we had fantastic service and the food - especially the salmon kebabs were absolutely to die for! what a breath of fresh air to finally have a decent bar in the southfields area. Cant wait to go back.
juliesmith - 19 Jun 2006 23:20
Have been here a few times since the pub changed hands and absolutely love it. The food is excellent and it is always a fantastic night out. Highly recommend.

Excellent food, good beer and really nice atmosphere this time of the year with two open fires. Will definately be back soon.

Heard this place used to be full of chavs so had previously avoided it but someone told me it had been done up so I went here a couple of months ago with a bunch of mates. We loved it. Have been back a few times since. All the staff were friendly and even helped carry large orders to our table. Food is a bit pricey but I'd rather pay a bit extra for something decent. Good beer garden but probably a little cold now. Well worth a visit.
irishsteve - 21 Oct 2005 15:27
My new local. Nice atmosphere, decent pint of 6X, friendly bar staff, courtyard garden. Large sofas at the front of the bar, and more seating at the side. No TV, which (strangely) I found to be a blessing.

New owners have done a good job on the refurb - smartening the place up while ensuring it still looks like a pub. My only complaints would be that there are not enough seats, and that the area with tables in the saloon bar is very open and a bit barn-like.
Otherwise, good job. I'll be back this weekend to sample the food. And the beer.
burnsy - 5 Oct 2005 08:43
Great new pub. Friendly atmosphere and a good place for a session - will be back.
bedlam - 1 Oct 2005 10:53
Great food, excellent atmosphere and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

Went to this pub last sunday for a family celebration. What a fantastic time we had. We have a delicious roast dinner, wine and dessert to die for. Children were welcome and we will definitely be back. Heard it was under new ownership! The beer garden is an added bonus and we took our drinks out there and relaxed for quite a while. It is hard to find a pub that provides such a good service and welcomes families these days! you can count on us to return. Highly recommended
juliesmith - 29 Sep 2005 11:44
Always looked like a bit of a old man pub so I'd never bothered going in there prior to the refurb. Went in for a few last night and was very impressed. Service from the (very friendly) landlord was great and the 6X was on great form - unusual for London. Massive comfy sofas and a decent looking menu with reasonably priced food. I look forward to commandeering sofas for long winter days of beery fun - I really hope this place does well, it'll be good competition for the Earl Spencer.
MrLash - 22 Sep 2005 14:31
Finally re-opened, much better than the old version, beer prices up but that was to expected. Great totty behind bar! Not the geezer.
gazzard - 17 Sep 2005 10:39
What a lovely pub! Perfect for a relaxed Sunday, with great food from a menu that changes regularly. If it's a nice day then the beer garden is a real sun trap, and the staff are very friendly. I will definitely be making it my regular.
monster_1 - 8 Sep 2005 16:13
Was here on Sunday very nice and i have been previously over the last few years. it has changed for the better, good food and decent beer, not over priced as some in the area.good mix of locals and new visitors.
Orc - 9 Aug 2005 19:51
Went here on Sunday and had a fantastic roast dinner. The pub looks fantastic and there is a real atmosphere. Sadly it was raining so i couldn't check out the beer garden. Surprised to hear negative comments about the beer from 'trimalchio'. The beer was excellent and the staff couldn't have been more helpful - will be back soon.
anonymous - 27 Jul 2005 19:23
If you like your bitter with an inch of froth on it, this is the place for you! I shall not return. It is a pity they wasted so much money on the refurbishment without removing the cause of why everybody stopped going there in the first place.
trimalchio - 6 Jul 2005 23:29
Had a fantastic Sunday lunch here with friends - food was lovely and great atmosphere - really comfy big leather sofas! The beer garden looked really good too.
sara2 - 4 Jul 2005 11:05
recently moved to the area and was unsure of where to go! went with a group of ladies for dinner and a few bottles of wine! what a fantastic place! the decor is amazing, ambience and staff couldnt be more helpful! Will definitely return, its a place for a good nite out! good looking bar and staff make it worthwhile.
anonymous - 3 Jul 2005 19:20
Really lovely place with great food (all cooked fresh to order) and friendly staff. Will be going back regularly - highly recommended
Libby - 1 Jul 2005 14:27
Really surprised by the negative comment about the staff - always friendly when I've been in. The food is fantastic and the pub has been brilliantly renovated to give it quirky and unique decor and great atmosphere. The beer garden is a must for the summer.
Alice_Claire - 29 Jun 2005 11:52
Change much needed and with a greate style too. I will be coming back.
jane123 - 27 Jun 2005 21:44
I agree that the refurbishment is excellent, but the impression was ruined by a surly barmaid who didn't know how to pull a full pint of expensive bitter that wasn't even in good condition. I'll give it about a month then return to see if they have learnt their trade.
trimalchio - 22 Jun 2005 21:19
As noted by others, the eagerly awaited refurb has been completed and doesn't disappoint. The courtyard garden is a big plus and will be great for the summer, the menu looks good (made me eager to stay and eat despite other plans last night) and the mix of tables and comfy seating seem really well balanced. Had a good pint of draft San Miguel, will be back to check on the ales soon...
OJ360 - 14 Jun 2005 16:51
By all accounts was a 'unique' experience prior to the new management. Now well worth repeated visits, not least to the beer garden when the sun's out.
Jestlife - 10 Jun 2005 11:06
Finally a refurbishment that hasn't ripped all the character out of a formerly great pub. Good food and drink, nice panelling and a large quiet and quirky courtyard garden which is pretty unique. Look forward to spending some time here this summer!
bustedflush - 9 Jun 2005 17:02
Went in after the refit - and wow, what a change? Really nice beer garden looked brand new, inside polished up and great new food menu. Food cheaper than the Spencer down the road and better, though maybe slightly less haute cuisine, though I think that's a good thing. Staff all very friendly and very relaxed atmosphere. Looking forward to going back - seems like an ideal outdoors pub for summer too.
Tabloid - 8 Jun 2005 15:35
Has completely changed hands and had a massive refurbishment in the last month - looking very exciting, massive garden, new layout inside, watch this space!
aficionado - 2 Jun 2005 14:13
A genuinely grim affair, sadly set in a potentially lovely building Don't wish to be overly negative, but hard to find any redeeming features here. Surly landlord, lousy beer, morgue like atmosphere
anonymous - 23 May 2005 13:37
very very grim.avoid.
anonymous - 29 Mar 2005 16:31
This pub has changed hands and is now, unfortunately, horrible. The front bar is now for the sole use of the local louts!Pity, cos I used to enjoy scrummy Sunday lunches here.
anonymous - 18 Dec 2004 12:07
Averagey locals type pub, not worth a special visit but worth a pint if you're passing.
