Still serving the regular IPA and Abbot ales alongside Scrum Down, a special from GK while the rugby world cup is on. The fourth pump supplied Twickenham's, Naked Ladies.
At least here you do get a couple of different beers than you normally find in most Greene King pubs.

What's happened here? A Greene King pub with two guest ales!
Never thought I would see the day.
IPA and Abbott the two regular brews, but also two changing guest beers.
Today's choice; Tolly Cobbold's Pheonix (admittedly brewed by GK) and Purity's Pure UBU.
Food was good (two meals for 11:95). Pleasant staff.
Will return later in the year.

Went in a came back out. Didn't try the beer but was regulars like Bombardier. Looked an okay modern pub but not for me.

Pleasant pub, good Greene King ales, freindly staff, good outdoor area. To be recommended..

Friday lunchtime, last rays of summer. Very friendly staff. Not too busy but not empty either. Did the "two meals for 8.95" thing and they were at the top end of pub food and superb value at that price.

Excellent range of vegetarian choices on the menu.

Hadn't been in here for a while, and trying to remember why not, then remembered that the "non-smoking room" was rubbish, back in the day. It's certainly back on our list as regular now.

This pub has large advertising boards outside stating they serve afternoon cream teas. We called in here yesterday afternoon around 4pm , it was entirely empty and we were told by the one member of staff that he had no idea how to make a cream tea and the landlord was over drinking at 'Billys' .

We were visitors to the area and we discovered later that 'Billys' is a wine bar. It would seem the landlord/manager would prefer to be elsewhere than to train his staff to meet the customers' requests .
We didn't get our cream tea, and I wasn't in the least surprised that there was no customers. We were charged over 6, for a small coke and a pint . We left and went to the Old Bell instead and had a superb meal served by very cheerful and willing staff who couldn't do enough for us..

Your standard 'GK pubco emphasis on food ' outlet. Only GK IPA and Abbot on the ale front. The Abbot was just about durable. Wouldn't have gone here if not in company but have to admit the sizzling plates of food that passed were a bit more enticing than your standard GK offerings. Staff and clientelle were pleasant enough so I wouldn't write it off.

Too quiet. Has a knockoff Wetherspoons feel to it.

Good old fashioned pub food.Perfect sausages and mash. friendly service and a good pint. Shame the place was almost empty - maybe two meals for a tenner is too cheaper for snobby Harpenden!

Very pleasant atmosphere, and well kept beers, although slightly on the pricey side. Excellent outdoor area too. To be recommended.

I Love this pub, i am not local to the area however whenever visiting I always head hrere to drink. yes it is true that the average age of drinker is fairly young, but the atmosphere is always buzzing, and the wine is always cold! the smoking area is fantastic and the whole outside area is amazing in the summer months. Love Love Love it!

Quiet pub but good seating in and outside.

Very quiet on my visit and I dont imagine it generates a lot of atmosphere even when busier. Its set back from the main road partly behind a hedge and they dont do themselves any favours having the pub sign mostly concealed by foliage either. Greene King pub with only GK IPA on, served too warm in my opinion. Not really one to bother with.

Reasonable looking pub overlooking (obviously, given the name) one of the greens at the north end of Harpenden Common. Much smaller than I expected inside, but there is a large beer garden plus more outdoor seating at the front. Three handpumps (two with IPA clips, the other unusued) plus one of the fancy new metal fonts dispensing (you've guessed it) IPA - that's Greene King's idea of choice, I guess...

Is it true that this is where the local lesbians hang out?

They could do with changing some of the staff in there: the could give many of the cheaper establishments in Chinatown lessons in how to be rude to customers.

Great location - poor staff, and food is rotten

Whitewhine - why were you looking at the landlord's arse?
anonymous - 17 Jul 2007 10:58
Full of Kids and a landlord that gives the impression that the sunshines out of his arse.

if you like a friendly pub but dont mind a pint of dishwater this is your pub!

Agree with the last comment except that I'm quite happy with the Stella.

I'm always disapointed by this place, no doubting it has the potential to be a great pub (location, size, outside seating etc) but somehow it doesn't work. Maybe if you're a lager drinker it's different but the beer choice is limited to Green King IPA and is usually in poor condition...perhaps I'm just too old for this place.

It's one of the best retreats in the surrounding area. Never any trouble, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic bar staff. I live in St Albans (where there are plenty of pubs) but still travel here every weekend for a quiet sip. 5*

Drop the kids off at this handily situated creche before heading out for a night in one of the town's grown up pubs.

Nice little pub just set back from Harpenden High Street. New Refurbishment. Patio area outside which is nice in the summer. Parking at rear. Generally a young crowd of mostly those who can't get into the George because they are not old enough!
