Beers from the Plamers range. My pint of Copper was fine Knowledgeable barmaid, talked a few other customers through the beer range. Seems to have been a few drivers in, as the low gravity beers were going well.. Food was interesting especially the Porky ploughmans and Shandy Chicas cheesy chips with pulled pork was huge.
Could do with a with a bit of doing up, as was starting to look a bit scruffy, bit otherwise well worth a visit.

This pub betrays its origins as a hotel as the main lounge area has a transitory, beige feel. Ales were from the Palmers and a pint of 200 was especially well kept. A good location at the foot of the hill and near to the museum and guildhall and historically significant but could probably do with livening up a bit – restoring a more traditional feel might work.

A fair sized pub right in the heart of Lyme Regis, this was surprisingly quiet on a recent midweek evening in July, when I would have thought there would be plenty of tourists around. Besides a few locals propping up the bar, we were pretty much the only people in there.

The main bar is carpeted throughout, has natural wood beams on the ceiling and a mixture of cream and maroon paintwork on the walls, with wood panelling lower down, but somehow doesnt actually feel that pubby, perhaps due to the seating which was high backed upright leather chocolate coloured chairs like you might get in a trendy restaurant along with light wood tables. There were several photographs on the wall, many of the local coastguard helicopter and some water colours of local scenes that were for sale.

We didnt eat, although the food menu looked to be a fairly typical pub grub affair and was divided in to sections such as jacket potatoes, sandwiches, platters, etc., as well as a few meat and fish dishes with most of the mains being around the 9 mark.

Ciders were all from Palmers, with their 200, Best and Copper Ale. The solitary cider was Thatchers Gold. Overall I was a bit disappointed with this pub, feeling it lacked much in the way of any atmosphere and preferred some of the other nearby options.

True. Nice pub but it serves some seriously cracking food. Loved the gurnard. All the guys ate well.
Dr Phil recommends the cheesecake.
We tried the Palmers 200 and the Best Bitter / IPA. Both had been kept well, tasted as good as they looked. Stuck with the Best Bitter - consistently good. Neither was an average pint.

Would definitely return. Its no session pub - but excellent service.

this pub is in a fab location, not really a huge amout of atmosphere and certainly not a drinking pub but i have eaten here on 5 or 6 occassions and i can not fault the food at all, always been very pleasant for lunch of dinner! & has a great menu

It was good find this pub/eatery so near to the front that welcomed our two whippets .The Palmers 200 was find, two out of the three meals were Ok but unfortunately I dont know what went wrong with the suet pudding ,it was awful even though we had to wait a long time for it to arrive and they weren't that busy.

Bit of a food place really and of course it is expensive. Handy location for the bus stop and like everywhere full of tourists. 6/10

Not as bad as the reports below had led me to expect. Service was a bit slow but the food was fine and two of the three Palmer's Ales that were on (I didn't try the third) were excellent. Not sure what certain other posters have got against Palmer's - always good ale in my opinion.

But back to the pub - not a bad place considering its location on the seafront of a major seaside resort.

This pub has a great location but it's a dump. Only one draught beer as all the others were off and the food was terrible.

A great find - unusual in offering great quality so close to the beach front!

Stopped in for coffee and the very friendly and helpful barman gave us some pointers for shopping and things to see.

Came back for lunch and got great fresh food, served promptly by more friendly staff.

Helpful barman sorted out the rest of our day by suggesting Charmouth (5 min drive) for beachy/fossil-hunting fun!

Seating inside and out (we tried both - outside for coffee, inside for lunch). Really nice all round!

Good location just opposite the bus stop in the square, so extremely handy for a swift 'arf when waiting for a bus. Friendly and efficient staff serve you mainly Palmers ales including 200 and Copper - both fine if you like Palmers beer (one of my spies told me the other day that the head brewer at Palmers doesn't even like real ales - this could explain quite a lot if true IMHO).

The premium lager (Once Staropramen, now Heineken) at the Pilot Boat is rapidly heading for 4/pint and is therefore unaffordable to the normal drinking man.

Pub grub is slightly on the expensive side, but probably good value for what you get. Even when the place is busy the food seldom takes more than 10 mins.

Expected the usual mediocre pub food, but this was very good, we eat out a lot so have plenty to compare it with, the lamb in tomato with fresh veg was lovely and fish platter was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful we will be going back again when next in Lyme Regis,
All in all a great place to eat.

Not a good place to go if you are on a pub crawl in Lyme.
It's mainly a foody kind of place and a bit of a rip off too.
I did'nt go alot on the interior as well.

4/10

Not really a pub as it is geared totally towards food but decent fish & chips plus very agreeable Palmer Copper

A real shame when a building with as much history as the Pilot boat gets stripped down so much that all that is left is a few pictures on the wall.

When i visited last week, every table in the place was set up for food. So kind of felt out of place only wanting a beer.

On the plus side, the Palmers 200 was very good.

Overall didn't live up to expectation, but decent enough.

Bright modern interior doesn't quite match the look of the building from outside, nor the character of the town itself. However, the staff were really friendly, and the two linked bars were spacious and clean. Tried the food which was fine, and had a few pints of Palmers. Not a beer that I had come across before, but liked it, and will try again. Landlady went out of her way to sort out a taxi for us, after we had missed the last bus (at 9.40pm!) on a Saturday night.

A blue and white exteriored, squat corner pub, with a beer patio

The interior is in this new modern style, having two rooms in white and light wood panel and high backed leather chairs. There was a mix of arty stuff and some traditional old pictures and ship memorabilia. It caters in one room mainly for diners, the other a more mixed room. The service was fine, the place fairly quiet and the music subdued.

Beer' tap tosh as usual, but had Palmers 200 Premium, which was very nice, IPA Bitter and Copper Ale on handpull.

The modern look isnt to my taste, the beer and service fine. Wouldnt hurry back, but not as bad as the Rock Point Inn in my view

A bit short of atmosphere, but Palmers beer was fine and food reasonably priced for a seaside town. A slightly more interesting range of food options than is normal.
richhol - 28 May 2009 09:57
A pub that appears to have turned itself into a characterless pastiche of a 1970's seaside caf (that just happens to have a bar in it). The only good thing about it is that the seats are fairly comfortable. On the downside - locals seem to get served first regardless of how many are in front of them, it's a Palmers house (as are most Lyme Regis pubs), the food looked OK but is very expensive as, indeed, are the bar prices. Everywhere else would need to be shut before I visit again.
BobOs - 15 Mar 2009 16:43
Waited an age to get served as barmaid was serving out of turn. Then she turned to a local chap in the other bar who had just come in to serve him first. I and another person waiting gave up and went somewhere else. Reading the beer reviews I'm glad we were spared.

Came in here after leaving the Royal Lion just up the road. A souless place without any atmosphere, beer is expensive and hardly worth drinking.
chopin - 16 Feb 2008 16:55
If you are just out for a pint then avoid this place, it is pretty much geared strictly for eating out. Food pretty functional. Could be so much better.
andy99 - 29 Jan 2008 20:55
Nice enough place but extortionate prices. Nearly 2 dearer than anywhere else in the town for a pint and a short. Noticed the guy who served me (landlord?) drinking in The Volunteer later in the evening so that tells its own story.
Pubgrabber - 26 Aug 2007 15:18
Bit dull in all aspects.
6bh96 - 5 Dec 2006 21:38
Poor tenants are being punished by Palmers. If they increase their turnover their rent goes up. A disincentive to improving the place. Shame that the brewery have such a stranglehold on this charming seaside town.
anonymous - 30 Nov 2006 21:43
good choice of food, fast service, child friendly - as much a cafe/restaurant as a boozer
mozzzzzz - 11 Sep 2006 12:16
I believe the food is over rated here. The curry recently was very poor quality and the cheese and biscuits were sent back due to the tiny amount of cheese served up. This could be a great pub if it looked like a pub inside rather than a restaurant and if the food was improved. The beer is fine though!
anonymous - 26 May 2006 16:12
Shot in here one lunchtime last summer with the olds and the kids. Nice bit of grub and the beer was good (Palmers are a bit underated I recon). However, being where it is I suppose they have to capitalise on the 'Day tripper' trade so yes, it does have more of a restaurant feel than a boozer. Would'nt like to spend the evening here but for lunchtime its pretty good.
DickStilton - 12 May 2006 13:00
We raised the volume with a vocal card game in this quiet seafront pub, but nobody battered an eyelid. Nice pint of Palmers Best.
SteveinLondon - 8 May 2006 18:57
a good pub - with excellent Palmers 200 served; but can be a bit restauranty especially in summer.
Creek - 13 Apr 2006 02:46
Just at the end of the bay, near a wonderful secondhand bookshop, with a great menu and well kept beers. They didn't blink when I ordered a "Muddy Water" (Orange Juice and Coke), which is always a good sign.
