After a bad experience on New Years (sustained tinnitus from the shit sound system, 4 cloakroom fee, robbery of 24 for 2 vodka and cokes and half a lager, and Now 24 on the decks), I decided to give it another try over the weekend on the off chance that someone (Richard Carr - does he still own it?) may have spawned some concept of customer service in the last eleven months.

Unfortunately I wasn't in the best of moods having come from its sister dump, Bliss. However, they shone like gleaming beacons of success compared to the horror that awaited me at Toko. Still the sound system was deafeningly bad - it sounded like someone had dropped some small change in the bass bin. I paid 20 for three pints whilst being smacked around like a tennis ball due to the fact that they were clearly about three hundred people above capacity, the doormen were gormless and the soap in the ladies stank of onions. Whilst I was not particlarly on the pull, I didn't relish the sideways glances of disgust from the opposite sex everytime they stood downwind. Oh and the music was still appalling.

Aside from the fact that they rip people off everyday through ludicrous drinks prices with no standard of service to back it up - why are they bothering?

FYI it takes more than some fit bar staff to run a decent bar.

Surely the lager was meant to be cold......

We wandered in early on a Saturday evening (around 6.30) and were charged 20 for 4 drinks (a single G&T, 2 Magners and a pint of lager) There was no ice for the gin or Magners and the lager was cold. Am sure it's great for a night out but not an early evening drink!

Not a bad place to drink, good decor and cheap drinks mid week. Does lack atmosphere but just one look at the place and you know what to expect, take it or leave it.

Downstairs in Toko has one of the best atmnospheres in town! the house music is awesome, everyone sings along, even the bar staff dance behind the bar whilst serving, truely the best night out if you are coming to Bournemouth

get there early tho, its open till about 6 but its so popular the queue is huge!

I think this bar has it all, free entry open til 6, great music loads of fit women and individual, I would be in here every time over the likes of national chains.

Gucci, gucci, burberry, gucci, .......Need I say More! Fake of course! A typical Bournemouth bar that we could all do without! Then again best to keep all the label watchers in the same place. I guess Mr Carr is involved somewhere.

I'm sorry but, how can you say Toko is not pretentious? Its renowned for bieng stuck up. Not saying the staff and managers dont work hard but the clientelle is so mainstream bournemouth. Its a wicked bar if you like posing and flashing the gold card but theres no real atmoshphere its all a bit shallow and unoriginal. apart from the fish tanks which are kool. If you have real style and taste you want to try a bar with a bit more character. Toko is the same every weekend, same shit music same people same fashion and cheap champagne. but i guess bournemouth people like that, i suggest bristol!!!!!
scorpio22 - 2 Apr 2005 17:08

anonymous - 26 Mar 2005 18:23
Sorry but it is stuck up and im certainly not common!!!!
princess_kaz - 26 Mar 2005 16:40
First of all,
i think you all need to look at the facts- toko is the busiest bar in bournemouth, it always takes the most money each weekend compared to other bars. and NO this is not because of drink prices, they really are not that high- esp in the weekday, you can get a 4pint jug of beer for 5! Okay on the weekend they go up- as does everywhere!!!!

also those commenting of staff- DO NOT!!! they are the hardest working staff ever!- maybe not all of them are skilled but they work so hard you can see the sweat- some even work for over 12hour shifts on a sat night!!
the managers also nikki and luke, all work so hard!!

Leave abuse to another bar- toko is a MASSIVE success and will stay so.

p.s and its not stuck up either, those of u who think it is are obviously common.

Agree with other comments about being overpriced, but it is quite good fun. Don't mind paying a bit more, but do mind when EVERY time i have been in staff over charge. whenever questioned they seem to admit to making a mistake (my ar*e). i have also watched a particular barman there over charging then pocketing (not very sneakily) the change. They obviously think people are too drunk to notice. Same happens at RC's other places.

Heres the scene. Its New Year's Eve 2004, you've come down with your mates to see in the new year and you decide to check out Toko. You've been there before and its a bit pricey but hey, its the new year and these are your mates. You order 3 bottles of becks and a pint of carling. You pay with a 20 note.

You get 40p back.

Dont care how tropical your fish are or how pretty your customers look, this place is over priced and over rated.

Go there if you enjoy setting fire to your paycheck for no reason other than to pretend you own Ferrari (you don't, its a mazda you fool).

TWO YEARS ON STILL AND STILL GOING STRONG,REMEMBER PEOPLE YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR IN THIS LIFE.NICE BAR MEANS DRINKS COST MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fatjim - 4 Jan 2005 14:02
Another Richard Carr over priced pub with terrible music..why oh why do people go there..
Lee - 20 Sep 2004 12:41
very trendy - cool fish tank behind the bar. maybe a little too large for a bar to start the night off with and air con very chilly!!
Helen - 1 Sep 2004 13:59
In the seaside town of Bournemouth, this bar features drink promotions regularly, including doubles and beer jugs. It also appeals to tourist because of the 'Fish in the wall' both behind the bar and behind the seating area. A downstairs area also has a dancefloor.
