please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Called on Sat 16/7. This place appears to be permanently closed, as confirmed by the barman in the Castle round the corner.

It is a typical English pub for after-work drinks. Inside, It was very comfortable and nice atmosphere. Also you can drinkeat, outside, it has a large terrace. If you are a big group of people, it is an ideal place to spend your after-work evenings.
The bar staff are selfless, and friendly. They have a large range of beers to choose from and if you want to eat something the menu is extensive and reasonably priced. If you are in this borough, don't hesiate to go there.

WOW! This pub surely got style, I was there last night (monday25th) from Scotland, totally relaxed atmosphere away from the craziness of high street, the food is absolutely lovely (try pizza and stew), cozy sofas and chairs, the bar staff is nice too, the greek/italian bartender was always helpful and available, welcoming and heartwarming, one of the best pubs in London.

Things havent improved since Foxski's visit; sadly still no beer choice and the appearance of a pub that has had half of its fittings removed and the new owners to skint or stingy to spend.

Depressing news. This pub has been taken over by Shepherd Neame. Forget all about the Timothy Taylor's Landlord, the strawberry beer and other upmarket European lagers. Now you can only buy Shepherd Neame's mediocre ales at 3.40 a pint - not too well kept - or low end lager, also at rip off prices. On the upside, the toilets have been cleaned properly for the first time in 20 years. Amazing! They don't stink of filth or filthy chemicals.

The best pub for drinkers in the area now is, without a doubt, The Mitre on Holland Park Avenue. Excellent for real ale, other drinks, atmosphere and food, although their prices are no better. If you only want sensibly priced, well kept real ale and a lively atmosphere, go to The Castle on Portobello Road. If you want a delicious meal and a glass of wine, go to The Academy, a few yards down the road from here.

Still the best pub for miles around. Comfortable, relaxed, cheerful and spacious with a beer garden, a big choice of beers and a consistently perfect pint of Landlord.

it used to be my local pub back in 1978 - 1981.......!!!!!!......then i moved from england. I came back 30 years after on december 2009...still the best pub in london (emotionally speaking)....nothing was changed......not even the wall paper on the ceiling........

Went day on Easter Monday around 4:30 pm.

Place was relatively busy and, as others have pointed out, understaffed; still, extremely generous cleavage of female bartender helped to kill the time.

Excellent choice of beers; most notably, three German wheat beers on tap including Franziskaner, my favourite. They serve it on its own glass, but with a slice of lemon, which you will have to ask not to put inside if you want your "Weizenbier" not to be spoiled.

Nuts, salted or otherwise, are not on offer.

The pub's interior is nice but gives the impression of being slightly run down, might be part of its character but I'd prefer it to just look nicer.

Besides the beer, the strong selling point is the excellent terrace on the back, nice and quiet and pleasant throughout.

On the whole the pub has some shortcomings, but the terrace and the Franziskaner more than compensate for them. Best to avoid it on busy times, though.

Bar staff are awful and Friday night is a nightmare to get served. Have some interesting guest beers Last Friday had their Landlord Ale which is a nice ale

Coach House Brewery Cracker Barrell and Bluberry Bitter on when I was in there this week. I had the Cracker Barrell and I have to say that I didnt care for it much - too light and insipid for me and lacking in depth of flavour. But Ive never had it before, so maybe it wasnt supposed to taste like that. This is a CAMRA heritage pub, but it seemed pretty ordinary looking to me. There were a number of sofas around the place, with scattered cushions OK if you like that sort of thing and want to loll around in pubs, but not my style. But there were enough normal tables and chairs for those who want to sit up while drinking! Another OK pub that is alright for a quick pint if you happen to be in the area.

I thought this place was quite alright - went for a Sunday lunch yesterday and had an acceptable 3 courses and coffee for less than 17 a head! The beer choice was extensive, the decor fun and the place had a generally airy feel to it.

Yes, they were woefully understaffed; at one point the lad in charge was running about like a maniac trying (and succeeding)to hold it all together. I asked him if he felt they were slightly down on numbers for such a busy lunch and he lamented that management decided they could cut back that day.

Very friendly service, surprisingly well priced and a nice atmosphere. Before I knew it I'd spent 3 relaxed hours in there; I'd certainly go back.

Consistently disappointing. OK beer served in dirty glasses. ALWAYS understaffed, so getting served is a task. Just has the air of a badly run pub about it. But still people go there, not sure why.
Last night, everyone was moved indoors from the garden at 9:30, to appease the locals! No signs to indicate this. Food served about 9:20, told to hurry up or take plates inside! Now THAT'S poor!

Gone down hill big time. When it's open (turned up twice in last week and still not open at 12.35, bit annoying when you've arranged to meet people) Avoid the Stella Artois on draught. Thought it was me but several companions agreed that it was iffy to say the least (uncleaned lines?) Very strange policy too on exactly when you can smoke with a drink outside. Big, big shame as potentially a nice place. Oh and don't bother to phone as they never seem to pick up the phone assuming that is that the number listed is correct.
hollparkjames - 22 Sep 2007 12:43
Some bar staff in this clip joint seem incapable of serving a pint of whatever tipple you choose. Spent a whole evening in the POW being served short measures when this was pointed out the topped up pint came back short and served with a sneer. Given the prices they charge is it too much to ask that they actually serve the pint we've paid for?
guantanamojoe - 10 Aug 2007 21:56
this place has to have one of the best beer gardens i have seen in london sunny but parts are shaded make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon there enjoying some drinks and some snacks!
elle_bella - 1 Aug 2007 13:51
I like this pub. The wine is very expensive (I paid 5.45 for a large Sauvignon) but it's good, and the bar staff let you try before you buy. The decor is fun and eclectic, there's a good beer garden, and, contrary to other reviews on here, I have enjoyed a perfectly decent meal here (I had the halloumi and roasted veg).
ladyjay - 25 Jul 2007 11:31
For drinking, this pub is decent enough, especially with the garden. However, the food on my visit was quite simply terrible. The roast lamb was dry to the point of being dessicated and the vegetables were stone cold. To be fair to the staff, they were quite happy to replace my roast lamb with roast beef, but if anything the replacement meat was worse and this time the gravy was also cold, and the vegetables were soggy. My friend's chicken breast was woefully overcooked. I left hungry as it was all pretty inedible. If you want to eat, don't do it here.
Barrry - 8 Jul 2007 21:47
We will be starting BBQ's Fri 22nd June Lunch 12-3pm

I totally agree with the last post - if you're hungry, go down the road to the briliant (if slightly more expensive) Academy.

Drinks are a tad pricey at the Prince O Wales but where else can you get a decent GERMAN wheat beer? (the wheat beer from the Sam Smith pub on Portabello road is good but not as good as at the prince of Wales)

Time for another review of my ever-changing local pub. The decor is still gorgeous, they've got the ambiance just right, and these days I find the staff invariably to be very friendly. Their ales are irreproachably well kept, and the landlord occasionally buys terrific ones from microbreweries. I just wish they'd get another pump on the bar, and not run out so often.

So for the time being, it's a lovely little pub which deserves support. But a word of caution: don't ever be tempted to eat here! I mean that very sincerely. If you want a fantastic meal, try the Academy a few yards down the road.
foxski - 16 Jan 2007 22:35
I work on Portland Road, just by the POW and would love to support it as my local pub, but the service is simply appalling. Ive been in on and off since it was re-opened, the dcor is cool and the outside space is great for a drink in the summer.

The place is let down by grumpy staff and service so slow and terrible service. Every time I go in I hope they will have improved, but they never do. At my last visit (Friday 12 Jan) I was told by the miserable bar staff that the chef was in a bad mood I should expect to wait for food. Not a great start. I asked if we might be able to have some bread while we waited, response: No you cant. I am not allowed to do food and I am not asking the chef. So we waited. 40 mins later the food arrived. No apology, no offering of a free drink or bar snacks nothing. Why I ever bother thinking this pub will change is beyond me. Dont waste your effort go somewhere else.

NB: I am astonished by the 17 July review below. Looks like an advertising job to me!

Prince of Wales, or POW, as the regulars know it. How long they stay regular, is up to the management. I say this because of the increasing number of times, myself and my associates are regularly bemused by the slovenly service the staff seem to employ. Menus, decimated by 'non delivery' of food stuffs....Only this afternoon, myself and two associates ordered food at the bar to be told the Goats Cheese and Tomato Tart was off due to 'non delivery'...of Goat, I imagine...I accepted this as THE ONLY thing off the menu, so I ordered an alternative, only to be told 25 minutes later that the alternative I had ordered was ALSO off the menu...The Chef then enlightened me to the 'small print' on the menu which stated that: 'due to food shortages, certain items will not be able to be served'. No problem...but due to my lack of mindreading powers and foresight, I was unable to work out what was ON the menu..

Get it sorted POW, or the customers that have shown loyalty in the past, will vanish as quickly as your ingredients.

Ths is a great pub apart from the fact that it takes about 20 minutes to get a drink - nice beer garden but this closes at 9.00pm - I visited the pub the other night and there was one person on the bar with loads of people waiting and there was no food - no snacks apart from crisps - Other staff were in the pub but ot serving !!- mind you sometimes you have to wait at least 40 minutes for your meals so not a good idea from a quick lunchtime vist -
booboo - 3 Jun 2006 10:19
You'd think 'cream sauce' wouldn't actually be cold cream poured on your food. Food is overpriced fluff.
harrypalmer - 16 Aug 2005 00:32
My first impression was that this is a great pub. Big outdoor area, impressive variety of foreign beers and comfortable looking chairs. First impressions are often deceiving and the experience is downhill from here. The reasons for this being 1) the bar staff are very very rude 2) it takes at least 10mins to get served 3) staff have little knowledge of the great beer they're serving 4) the outdoor area closes at 7pm and 5)it gets so busy you never get to sit down anyway. Great potential but in the end a very dissapointing experience!
beer_appreciation - 4 Aug 2005 17:00
Sadly I have to downgrade my earlier rating. Over a series of recent visits, standards have fallen badly in terms of both ale quality and general atmosphere. On my last visit the music was appalling and the beer prices had been hiked to an outrageous 3 per pint.
foxski - 28 May 2005 18:58
The Prince of Wales just keeps on getting better. The atmosphere is brilliant, the decor is lovely, the music is excellent, the management and staff are great, the ever-changing real ale is always superb... I could go and on! It's a little bit too crowded for me on a Friday night, but any other evening, it's delightfully laid back. My favourite local. May it long flourish! 10/10

great decor - v classy, although what would you expect for Holland Park?

Good, rather quiet pub. Once very down at heel, but refurbished and modernised a couple of years ago. Not a wide range of beers but they do real ale and a guest beer, and a good choice of wine. Staff are pleasant. Nice, mixed crowd of locals. Open, airy and relaxed environment, comfortable seating including sofas. Decent range of food is also on offer, but I haven't tried it yet.
