user reviews of The Keep, Guildford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Always seems very empty here, maybe it is a little tucked away compared to other pubs. The garden area is small, but there is plenty of room inside. The 6X was pretty decent, the other beer on offer was the Surrey Hills Shere Drop.
aleman - 19 May 2014 17:16
Small pub opposite the castle. The exterior still looks like a typical pub. But the interior feels more like a lounge bar, with sofas, various artifacts to admire and a small outdoor courtyard. I was the only customer in on my Monday evening visit. Although Monday is often very quiet for pubs. An eclectic music selection was playing. I walked in to some sort of German war song! Tribute & Hobgoblin were the ales and to my delight, they stocked a real cider - Addlestones. In fact, it was the only one of 8 Guildford establishments to stock one. So a 6/10 for me. But not quite as good as the Royal Oak.
blue_scrumpy - 22 Aug 2013 19:27
A real discovery. Delightful interior and decor. That rare thing a modern looking pub with personality!

A welcoming little pub that is clearly a civilsed place for civilised people. Lovely.
strangetorpor - 6 Jan 2013 11:32
Nice little pub out of the way of the High St. a couple of real ales on Surrey Hills Shere Drop was one which was on good form, did not eat so no comment on food. 6/10

To respond to some of the comments listed below, we are sorry that NoDisgrace found the Pub dirty, we have strict cleaning policies which we hope all our staff adhere to & we have taken steps to hopefully ensure that it is never dirty & the "shabby Chic" eclectic feel is the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere we aim for & a question of taste. But we have been here 4 years and have always made a seasonal change to our menu & changed to our Winter Warmer Menu at the beginning of November, we always keep our customers favourites on but make several changes to each menu each year. We look forward to reviews & encourage our customers to review us on this site

Not a bad bozzer for a town pub just away from the main drag 2 real ales on when I visited ,worth a stop off if nearby.
Last 2 comments signed up same day within half an hour of each other ? possible Roland alert me thinks.

The Keep is quite the undiscovered gem in Guildford. Situated just off the main high street, opposite to the Castle grounds, it doesn't see the regular trade a more centrally placed pub might. Which is a shame because the pub itself is fantastic!

The dcor is exactly how intended, dark and old. It gives a feeling of age and reflects the history attached to the pub itself.

The food is all home cooked and tastes great, it's very reasonable too!

The Keep is a small and well kept establishment. It's hard to compete with large chain companies like Wetherspoons, but what the keep has that they don't is quality and character.

A definite visit if you're a keen pub crawler!
BlackLabel - 3 Nov 2011 10:48
Fantastic food, great beers, what more could you want from a pub?
JohnAlbert65 - 3 Nov 2011 10:13
A decent enough option not far from Guildford's surprisingly appealing high street, although judging by the very inviting interior, it was probably once a much better pub. It's gone a bit bistro now and could be mistaken for a wine bar. All that said, a small but attractive beer garden makes it a sensible stop off in a town not overly blessed with quality boozers.
BoehmBawerk - 7 Aug 2011 19:41
Looks great from the outside but my first ever visit was not a success. Walked in and was a little surprised by what I saw. Not my idea of a traditional pub but what sealed it for me was the fact that there was no one manning the bar, a definite no-no for me. Quick look round then back out that door!
beernotfood - 24 Jun 2011 18:55
Visited mid afternoon on my crawl of Guildford, nice friendly pub with a walled outdoor area at the back which was a real suntrap and pleasent to while away a hour or two. Good selection of well kept ales.
Hodge1 - 14 Jun 2011 06:04
After 5 minutes in this place, I was thinking ... is this a Pub?, is this a Bistro?, is this a wine bar? or is this a coffee shop?
But somehow they manage to pull off all of the above very well indeed.

There is a fantasically relaxing atmosphere here coupled with a mixed and friendly clientelle.

The background music was varied but always always spot on. I could have sat there all day gussling the cider.

The staff are also super friendly and helpful.

They don't have a huge selection of drinks ... only Tea and Doom Bar ales. But luckily for me, the one draught Cider was Addlestones. Yum yum ... my favourite. 3.60 a pint, so not too bad.

I don't normally talk about food, or the condition of toilets in the pubs I visit, but I'm going to in this case. It's a talk about food and the condition of toilets in the pubs I visit of two halves really.
Firstly, the beef and guinness hotpot with mini loaf I had was lovely. Couldn't fault it at all. Also excellent value for 6. The whole menu looked good and was full of good old fashioned wholesome type home cooking meals. Wish I could also have sampled the chilli with wedges, which they described as very hot (never hot enough in 95% of pubs).

Think this is only the second time I've wriiten about toilets, the other time being to praise the clenliness. But sadly these toilets really let the place down. The actual pub is spotless and the tiny vases of fresh flowers on each table is a nice touch. And so it disturbed me that they couldn't spent 1 hour and a tenner's worth of paint to make the toilets presentable.

The toilet has one stall consisting of wooden door between two wooden panels. There is a lock but the joinery is such, that the door won't actually close. The wooden brown door was filthy and had a huge black paint streak down it. The exposed pipes etc looked as though they'd never been cleaned and there was a couple of chunks mssing from the toilet seat. How much is a new toilet seat anyway?? ... 10, 15 quid??

Come on staff at The Keep, get that toilet sorted out and then you'll have completed the job of creating a great pub. Oh, and if possible, get rid of the tacky quiz machine in the corner.

To summarize then, I'd highly recommend a visit to this pub ... but, if you need a pooh, hold it in until you get home.
Pat_Bateman - 7 Mar 2011 10:36
Good little back street bozzer, 2 beers well kept and the pub is away from the madness of the High St.shoppers.
FredCarno - 4 Jan 2011 19:48
This is a small pub of great character nearly opposite the castle in the old, quanit part of town. Good service and nice, good-value home-cooked food. The beers - Surrey Hills Shere Drop and Otter Ale were in good condition. Comfortable seating, and a nice atmosphere make this a pub worth visiting when in Guildford.
metrology_man - 25 Oct 2010 08:18
Fairly good place.
mint_julip - 24 Oct 2010 19:35
One of the best Guildford pubs for real ale. The Surrey Hills beers are usually on top form. Glad to read that the place is getting busier - it's often been quite empty on previous visits. Got to use it or lose it!
GrahamA - 7 Apr 2010 14:16
Shere Drop and Surrey Hills on decent form. Good for a while before moving on.
BestBeerBoffin - 13 Mar 2010 16:21
I really like the Keep, although its secret may be out as it was very busy on Saturday night. The reason I usually go there is that it is tucked away and serves two local ales...
beergibbon - 2 Mar 2010 16:48
Took the short walk away from the town centre on the strength of the entry in the Good Beer Guide which states that the pub offers Surrey Hills beers plus a guest ale from a local micro. The only beer on offer on Saturday was the ubiquitous Doombar. Disappointing.
GazzaTheBeerMan - 4 Jan 2010 10:56
Visited for a spot of lunch and it was pleasant going. Nicely home cooked food so they clearly make an effort here. The only complaint was a hair in the food but it happens! The music was not belting out which made for a relaxing time and the spot of Surrey Hills was definitely on the money. Good work!
JohnOcean - 19 Dec 2009 14:32
A one room pub with a bit of a modern feel. The entrance door is glass with a large metal handle, a bit like entering Boots, once inside, some traditional seating, functional wooden bar, a couple of fire places but not sure if used. There is some sort of Laurel & Hardy theme with model statuettes in a few areas including a fire hearth. Wooden floor, a rear courtyard, tonight they were setting up for a private party, but we were made welcome and didn't feel chased out.
Three pumps served Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Skinners Betty Stogs plus an Addlestones cider.
The very friendly landlady was apologetic about the party closure and tried to direct our group to local pubs serving decent real ale but also explained that Guildford is not great for real ale drinkers.
Maldenman - 14 Nov 2009 22:00
Not sure about it food is up n down and so empty can feel awkward.
running_around_pubs - 28 Sep 2009 12:01
Not been in here in over a year,it has changed for the better, yes it is quiet alot of the time but good for a chill out drink all the same ,Surreyhills beer on which was very good and a good choice of lagers.
A good night had.
stroller - 20 Sep 2009 14:46
Good food and a good Surrey Hills but you're right Graham it is always pretty much dead especially at lunchtimes.
GuildfordAndWoking - 19 Sep 2009 16:07
Shere Drop on last night which tasted very nice. I had one of the beefburgers as well which was small but pretty good.

Can't believe how few people were in here again. Does it ever get busy?
GrahamA - 11 Sep 2009 14:54
Visited Saturday 4th July.

Only one ale on the go - which was they Surrey Hills, a fine pint mind you. But perhaps they could do a little more ales?

The sitting areas are nice and reasonably spacious for a fairly small pub.

On the downside the home cooked food was somewhat disappointing, but perhaps I simply chose the wrong option from the menu. So right now i'd give it 8/10. Service was ok but not amazingly friendly.
best_pub_in_city - 4 Jul 2009 20:40
Does need a little bit of maintanence around the edges.

Great local ales and lovely to eat here also.

Attracts a business class crowd at times.

Worthwhile in the summer too.
best_pub_in_city - 21 Jun 2009 19:42
A lovely setting just by the Old Castle - so its a fine place to stop off if visiting the area or a local.

A visit the other day yielded some notable comments. First of all I was shocked at how empty the pub was, the two staff seemed rather bored.

The gentlemans room is a bit of a disgrace with no locks and a complete mess.

The beer is what is good about this pub. Only bad thing would be a pint of San Miguel costing 3.40 - admittedly it is a hopeless pale lager so its no great loss missing out on.

The Ascot ale and Ranmore ale are in fine working order and at 2 a pint it is excellent value.

Eating here is also a pleasant experience as we did the other day. The outside section is excellent for the summer weather but does on the downside attract smokers.

8/10
proper_beer_eating_chap - 12 Jun 2009 17:02
OK so it looks a bit like a coffee shop ! but with two well-kept Surrey Hills brews on tap (Shere Drop and either Ranmore or Gilt) and friendly staff it's on my very short list of places for swift one after a throat parching hike around the shops. This week they've had both Ranmore and Gilt Complex at 2 a pint ...works for me, and its down hill to the bus stop! ;-)
thirstybob - 5 Jun 2009 10:34
Called in the other night and it was very quiet,2 real ales on (I could only see 2 real ale punps on the bar)The pub has lost its olde Guilford pub touch,it has been done out well but a pub look it ain`t.
Lager was good.
I can see where Beersupper is coming from, but I do wish this pub well.
Poss. some where to take your g/f for a cozy drink.
ThePilgrim - 19 Apr 2009 14:50
I think this is where that VIC guy does the music sometimes, cant say i'd come here for an open mic night that is not my style u know but for a pub and an eating venture its pretty neat well named by the castle and all, as people have s aid decent ale at times though not a wide choice either does the best it can for what it is if u ask me. I reckon camra would visit here.
PubMessenger - 22 Mar 2009 14:28
Fantastic.
GuildfordAndWoking - 17 Jan 2009 18:59
In response to Beersupper`s last comment the last time he set foot in this place by the sound of it must have been when the place was indeed the Two Brewers around 10-13 years ago.

He would also notice (if he had actually gone into the bar) that the strictly over 21`s policy keeps the students down Bridge Street, Pews and Fahrenheit.

I have found the place to be very traditional for a Guildford based pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. Along with the Shere Drop and Ranmore ales from Surrey Hills Brewery and at the moment a guest Ascot Ales `Posh Pooch' they seem to possibly be the only bar in town that bothered this Christmas with home made mulled wine and Winter Pimms to boot, the food is very good too and at a very reasonable price.

The days of Spit and sawdust pubs are long gone, if you want that sort of thing go up the East End.

donjuandepedro - 11 Jan 2009 00:39
This pub has not been the same since it changed its name from The Two Brewers a few years ago now and used by students,it was a good old Guildford drinking den then.
Beersupper - 1 Jan 2009 17:26
Visited recently - Pub is still quiet with friendly service. Adnams beer had replaced Surrey Hills, maybe Surrey Hills shall return. The Adnams Broadside is good so it was no great loss.
BestBeerBoffin - 13 Nov 2008 12:47
I went in on Hallowe'en night. Looked as though there was a party on, but it was near closing time so I had no problem just staying for a drink.

This pub is very pleasant, has a well kept real ale and friendly staff. I realy don't understand why it is not busier. Have real ale drinkers just accepted that Guildford is a desert? This pub should go onto the admittedly short real ale itinerary in Guildford.
alexw123 - 11 Nov 2008 14:14
Worth popping in for a pint of Surrey Hills alone.
BigAleDrinkhead - 26 Oct 2008 12:11
Had an excellent pint of Shere Drop here on Friday, easily the best pint out of a few in Guildford that evening. Not crazy they only sell one real ale, that's what they turn over at the moment - and the result is it was in top condition. Seemed fairly quiet for a Friday night but the landlord said it would probably get busy later.
Phil_C - 5 Oct 2008 21:37
Best pub in town at the moment. Crazy to say that when they only sell one ale - Surrey Hills. It is just nice and neat and friendly.
BestBeerBoffin - 17 Sep 2008 16:55
Got to say the outside decor is well done same as the sign, well thought out.
Top marks for that.
Beersupper - 5 Sep 2008 16:16
Probably best pub in Guildford right now. Have no idea why it has become so empty these days.
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 23 Aug 2008 23:12
D&Bass nights!! says it all really, but I guess one man's meat is another man's poison and all that.
shotboy - 21 Aug 2008 14:14
Hey shotboy i drank there for at least 2 years, and thou it was quite during the week it was banging on fri and sat nights...unfortuantly this meant noise complaints from the elderly residents over the road(somthing i am sure is NO problems theese days)
And the D#Bass nights were ledgendary!!!
mercutio - 18 Aug 2008 00:37
Same as the keep i would venture shotboy.
Ps are you the barman here ?
ThePilgrim - 9 Aug 2008 15:00
Yes the 3Tuns, a very successful place wasn't it? Lasted all of about a year! It's gone, they've gone, get over it!!
shotboy - 6 Aug 2008 16:12
Recently returned ere after a couple of years away...wtf has happened??
When it was the 3Tuns it had some personality..not to mention a manager with some as well.
Bring back the aussie fella and the staff and customers of 05!!!
mercutio - 24 Jul 2008 18:08
If this looks like the inside of a scout hut to you, you were a member of a most unusual troop.
Vindaloo - 18 Jul 2008 07:08
Good all rounder. Very quiet it must be said.
TheSurreyPubMan - 5 Jul 2008 05:53
Nice people really making a good effort here. The food is home made and very nice. Quiet enough to actually relax too.
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 29 Jun 2008 11:01
Never come across a toilet that sucks wonder if it will catch on.
ThePilgrim - 28 Jun 2008 11:12
Good value, great ambience, relaxed pub with Surrey Hills and the food looks like it could be nice too! Will report if i eat here... 9/10 only downside was the toilets which suck!
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 27 Jun 2008 23:02
Nope don`t see it MrReasonable still looks like the inside of a scout hut to me and got to say if you dream about this place see someone about your complaint hope it`s not catching.
The service was ok it`s just the place.
stroller - 27 May 2008 19:26
Same ol same ol name change but still looks like a scout hut.Don`t know what it is but always get a cold feeling in here not cozy at all.
stroller - 17 May 2008 14:04
The name may have changed but that is about it. The pub is just like how it was when called Mustard. The Surrey Hills beer is the only ale, but a good ale!
aleman - 17 May 2008 12:26
Came here specifically for the Surrey Hills beer. The Shere Drop was not featured but tried the Ranmore Ale instead which was good and kept well. But there were a total of 6 customers (including me) on a Thursday evening. Shame cause the pub had an inviting feel and was warm on a cold evening. Can a pub survive with this few customers?
GrahamA - 6 May 2008 14:27
Agree with the positive comments. I've moved away from Guildford now, but it seems to me this place changes name/ownership every couple of years - hopefully the new owners will stay for a while. Only two handpumps and one ale (Surrey Hills Shere Drop), which was on very good form. Music was good too.
grecian - 28 Apr 2008 11:12
Sudden name change: now called the Keep.

Blimey, it's all going on.
Vindaloo - 5 Apr 2008 17:23
Nice time here on Thursday.

Shere Drop is a great bitter, think this is the only place in the town centre to have it. Smartish, youngish crowd.
Vindaloo - 23 Mar 2008 16:44
Popped in late afternoon on Thursday 14th. Surrey Hills ale was on form. It was nice to be offered 'straight or handle' when ordering a pint. My wife enjoyed her wine. Fairly quiet, early days I imagine. I got the feeling that the owners really cared. Will go back.
nevardmedia - 18 Feb 2008 12:55
I had heard about this pub and went in on 6th Feb at about 10pm. Very quiet - a max of 3 other customers. Surrey Hills ales tasted a bit tired, but with this level of custom they wouldn't get through enough to keep it in good condition. Seemed a pub with potential especially if it gets more custom. I'll be back to try it again.
alexw123 - 8 Feb 2008 18:40
The place is probably very different from how it was when it was the three tuns! Very much a modern styled gastro pub now, pretty good beer prices of 2.50 for an ale from the surrery hills brewery. Very keen on having candles around the tables here!
aleman - 6 Feb 2008 11:20
Have tried to get in here on 2 different afternoons but the place was closed so will not try again.
Beersupper - 30 Oct 2007 17:14
We took over Mustard at the beginning of October & aim to provide a relaxed ambient atmosphere for our customers to enjoy socialising in with occasional "laid back" live music, we are closed Sundays at present but open every other day from Midday with food served between 12-6 and real ale is now being served. We are strictly over 21's. We also wish to ensure everyone enjoys themselves and look forward to hearing your comments
black22ltd - 16 Oct 2007 13:01
ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS
Callum251 - 20 Jul 2007 23:41
is this bar and 'the legion' over 21s?
Apw223 - 24 Jun 2007 11:03
I see another comment go`s missing because someone disagrees, whats the point of this site if you cant say what you feel.Makes Phillipa`s comments useless as well as no one knows what the heck she`s on about.I found this place average nothing special at all, plus its not open lunch times.
Lets see how long this comment lasts!!!!!!!!!
Guildforddrinker - 1 Jun 2007 15:44
I just wanted to say that we (Mustard) are very gratefull for the kind comments that have been posted here over the last few months.

We took over last July and have had an uphill struggle to change the Bar and peoples perceptions of it. It's really nice to hear that you guys have noticed the effort we've put in.

....just wanted to confirm that we had nothing to do with the comments that have been posted...other than making sure everyone enjoys themselves. We are always interested in customer feedback be it good or bad.
James_Dillamore - 8 May 2007 12:14
Oh, and the last review was me in case people accuse me of being affiliated with the bar as I accidentally put my comment down anonymously.
Phillipa - 3 May 2007 08:52
I don't know if the previous reviews were by staff or management, or if Guildforddrinker is staff or management of another pub somewhere (makes more sense to slag other pubs off than say how great your one is), but I think this bar was good. Went in there back when it was The Three Tuns, and was a right dump, full of proper Goth Muppets. Much better now, nice atmosphere, decent people and generally a good night out.
anonymous - 3 May 2007 08:49
a breath of fresh air for guildford, freindly staff, really nice crowd, went at weekend the dj was very good, a nice selection of beers and wine.
good work guys keep it up,
anonymous - 1 May 2007 18:19
This place changed hands some time last year and has been a breath of fresh air ever since. Whenever I am in Guildford for bit of a pub crawl I always make this one of my stops. Is also good for getting a crowd together, big or small and drinking the night away. Excellent food, good dcor, live music on certain nights and all reasonably priced with friendly (and some rather tasty) bar staff (not to mention some of the talent which that place attracts!). Plus I heard through the grape vine they are starting comedy nights soon once a month (something like that)? Definitely one of the better new bars to open up shop in Guildford for quite some time. Well worth giving it a try!
anonymous - 25 Apr 2007 04:40
went in for lunch a last week and very nice.
comfy chairs, good food, good service !
sure this place will do well.
bmwz4 - 4 Jan 2007 01:05
Very cold looking place.Still had a look inside not sure if its a bar or a pub.Menu below average, drink range average.
Beersupper - 16 Dec 2006 13:12
Doesn't seem to get busy until around 9 but always has a good atmosphere when it does

The new managment are really making an effort with live music and really great food.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2006 16:09
Just changed its name again now known as Mustard, keep changing this place`s name will not make it a good pub.Lets go back to being The Two Brewers & get a good landlord in who knows how to run a good friendly establishment.Any chance i think not hoow hum
stroller - 29 Jul 2006 15:48
Just changed hands again. They must be doing something right(not).Lets hope the new people do.
anonymous - 30 Jun 2006 20:30
Popped in here recently, surprising quiet for a thursday, but all the essentials; cold beer, quick service, clean surroundings. Cool music too! Suspect the 'over 21s' policy is to weed out the skint students who seem to treat the place like a youth club with beer! Top bar.
mooty123 - 7 Apr 2006 00:19
The Tuns has had its heart ripped out...New manager(aussie guy left recently)...New policies(no under 21's,no music=NO character!!).
I know some people think that an over 21 policy is a good thing, but Guildford has a definate lack of places where the younger crowd are made to feel welcome...and untill recently this was one.
I am 23,but my g/f is 20,and i was told that i could stay, but that she wasnt welcome anymore??!!??
Anybody knowing were the previos manager has mooved to please let us know..it will be worth the trip(oh and the open mic and hip hop nights!!)!!

p.s..ive rated this pub a 9,but thats recently gone to a 0!!
mercutio - 27 Sep 2005 15:42
Intimate. Funky. Friendly. Brilliant Australian Boss Fella. Ontop of that...GOLDEN WONDER CRISPS!! (always good to see in this Walkers dominated world!)

Shame about the loos.
anonymous - 28 Dec 2004 18:19
Get on down to the drum and bass night every other wednesday, turns into a mini rave. Pretty cool!! Other than that very friendly bar staff and a very well run pub
Rory Hendry - 17 Nov 2004 23:03
this pub is brilliant. the people are lovely and they sell great beer!also live music. go!
katie - 7 Nov 2004 16:48
great pub, decent music, nice people, good drinks and a great atmosphere!
Lorry - 3 Aug 2004 21:46
Good to see that they finally got off their pretentious high horse and showed the England v France game
Gareth - 16 Jun 2004 10:30
pub does a lot of live music acts
dan - 4 May 2004 12:46
Excellent pub with friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices. Good fun!
Claire - 23 Dec 2003 13:40
Expensive and full of tossers, same deal as the old powerhouse.
Gareth - 26 Nov 2003 10:53
Expensive, pretentious, Surrey boys with too much money, this isn't Brighton.
Sasha Smith - 25 Nov 2003 11:49
I liked better as the original Two Brewers instead of all this pretentiousness, certainly not cheap booze ere!It used to have character not now all poncy!
Duane Farr - 27 Aug 2003 23:34
Before it was the Three Tuns, it was the Mash Tun. Before that, the Old Guildfordian, before that the Two Brewers.
Vindaloo - 25 Aug 2003 15:31
friendly and warm. Perfect atmosphere for a comfortable night out with your mates
N/A - 5 Nov 2002 17:51
comfortable, classy but hectic on saturday nights. The manager and new assistant manageress are fantastic!
N/A - 5 Nov 2002 17:48
Cool decor and warm atmosphere, hot reds downstairs and blue chill-out room upstairs. Live djs and live accoustic sets from wicked local bands. Good promotions and often have themed parties (halloween, porn, rock star, etc) fancy dress optional. Decent prices and decent drink selection.
