user reviews of the Brasshouse, Birmingham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's a reasonably good pub really, more of a pub than the 'bars' around here (there is also the huge 'spoons down the road for it to compete with). Did have proper beer also.

a new building aiming for a traditional feel, unconvincing and misses the mark. It's an ok pub, but would be near the bottom of my pub list in Brum. Pricey and the service is poor when the post-work rush begins. Quite pricey as well.

I often think reviewing a pub from a visit on a Friday night is unfair, so I shall continue to do so anyway.

Arriving at around half nine and considering the surrounding alternatives of Pitchers, All Bar One and The Slug and Lettuce, I didnt hold out much hope for this place. Pleasantly surprised probably sums up my experience of this pub after my short stay here. We got through a number of rounds even though we were just stopping in for the obligatory one and to my mind, thats always a sign of a successful pub. Somehow, some way this place manages to retain a pub feel within the mire of nearby alternatives doing their utmost to reassure the city boys that they are in fact drinking in an exclusive bar, in an exclusive area. No doubt in order that they can relieve them of as many pennies as possible before the end of night.

Having said that, its not that I specifically want a pub feel on a Friday night, especially considering this location. Im perfectly happy with the loud music and amateur drinkers, but I was just generally impressed with how this place managed to keep its pub values regardless of the time and location. The service was quick and polite, the drinks were more than reasonably priced and the general atmosphere inside was a good one due to the mix of people.

A pub where people go to drink instead of pose. Here, that novelty alone is worth 7/10.

Judging by the earlier reviews, I must have come in on a good day! Quick, polite service and a top condition pint of Banks's Bitter. Recommended!

A modern-type pub in a trendy area of Birmingham. Situated, next to the canal, it's large and I expect it gets very busy in the evenings at weekends. On our Saturday lunchtime visit, it was fairly quiet. Beers were mostly from the Marstons range - Pedigree, EPA & Banks's Bitter, plus Timothy Taylor Landlord. There's nothing particularly special about this place to make any sort of detour to the Broad Street area.

I found this place to be fairly OK, in a slightly cheaper All-bar-One, Slug and Lettuce type sort of place. Beer choice was reasonable and there was a good mixed crowd of younger and older people enjoying a few beers in a civilised place. Would pop back in again.

This pub seems to be Wetherspoons wannabe and fails, beer is more expensive with a choice of 4 beers all boring to a beer snob like me. For some reason it was busy, it's in the Good Beer Guide, God know why, some of out party left to get a swift pint in the nearby Lloyds No.1, they reported it was the worst JDW they'd been too! I also spotted a Walkabout Australian bar nearby, I can only conclude this is a part of town where you don't come for the beer.

Can't comment on when this place is busy, but on a friday afternoon with admittedly not many customers service was swift, tetleys cask 7 or 8/10, food looked ok but was eating elsewhere. Would recommend for a pint.

A not unnatractive pub when it`s not too packed, gather the food and beer is ok in the day. Weekends are a different kettle of fish, bar staff do sterling job under pressure and service is reasonable considering the crush. Door personel keep the t-shirt /shorts/trainers riff raff out (It`s the weekend - make an effort!) and keep a lid on any aggravation - which amazingly seeing as how busy it is happens very rarely.

Bouncers won't let you in unless wearing a proper shirt, jeans frowned upon. Enough said.

I totally agree with the comments made about the manageress of this establishment. She should be shipped to America to attend a course in Customer Service. An old saying comes to mind to describe this person
"You can take the girl out of the street, but not the street out of the girl".
She has a bad attitude to say the least and is seriously lacking in social
graces. "Poor thing".

Massive L shaped Wetherspoonalike bar with little in the way of interesting features although the bare brick and wood dcor looks pretty good. Everywhere was very clean and the chatty barmaid was very efficient. There are a couple of huge TV screens and a quiz machine. Six handpumps on the bar but only three were on. Bankss bitter, TT Landlord and Pedigree. I had a Landlord which was surprisingly good (TT doesnt usually travel very well). Its OK but there are a lot better places hidden away round here, none of them actually on Broad Street though, so get off the main drag and discover them. Better than it's 3.2 rating on here though.

Really rude landlord and bad service.

Food takes forever to come and real ales are not great.

Not Recommended!
billspark - 20 Feb 2009 14:51
Recently refurbed, without gutting the place, just looks a bit snazzier - still reasonably priced scran having just treated me mum for lunch. Friendly staff too. Good to see a bar on Broad St that isn't imminently shutting down and with a bit of class.
djugly - 28 Feb 2008 19:04

Nice looking pub both inside and out with a canal side location near Brindley Place. Serves decent real ales and has a good menu and comfortable seating. I normally drop in for a pint when I am in Birmingham on business but gave it a miss last time (6th July) as the Ozzy Osbourne tribute band was not really conducive to conversation. The Prince of Darkness himself was around later to witness the laying of a paving stone in his honour in the Walk of Stars in Broad St.

Had a refreshing bottle of Corona in ere, very nice inside, dont go Broad St too much but worth making this place a regular watering hole when I do...
seaman_max - 14 Jun 2007 17:04
this place is about the best place to get a good pint on broad street. having said that you have to get passed the bouncers in the evening when the punters are mostly old and west indian. but you should make the effort to get in cause there is never any trouble and everyone in here has a good time.
BeerBolshevik - 18 Apr 2007 10:43
One thing i must say is that on a Saturday night the DJ needs to look around the room a bit more often, and play the music the crowd wants to hear, i was in there a couple of weeks ago and he was playing tunes by Liberty X, Justin Timberlake and Scissor Sisters, come on please!!! We want to hear old 80's and 90's soul classics all night, not just at the end of the night.

I have druunk and eaten in this pub on a virtually daily basis over the past seven years. I have never experienced any problems whatsoever with either the staff or management. The Brasshouse is one of the few upmarket pubs on Broad Street and whilst it doesn't tolerate bad behaviour or drunken louts it is a great place for a quiet and civilised drink and something to eat

Images 1 & 2 are The definately The Brasshouse, image 3 as Brumchris states is what used to be the Crown which is now called Exodus. The Brasshouse continues to hold traditional pub values close to its heart,i prefer using it in during the daytime of hours of Saturday & Sunday where a wide age range mix quite happily,& friendly atmosphere exudes.
glenn468008 - 23 Jul 2006 11:35
I dont know which pub is being reviewed but the photo shows, what used to be the Crown which is now called Exodus. The Brasshouse is on the other side of the canal to this, and Ive always found the staff to be OK in the Brasshouse.
Brumchris - 18 May 2006 10:31
The older reviews here reflect the changes at the Brasshouse... it's always been full of obnoxious and rude staff.. especially managers and bouncers... but that's because its on Broad Street where everyone is generally rude and obnoxious. I'm not part of the group below but just wanted to let the world know that i too have had terrible experiences of this place. Shame it could be a nice place but the way you get treated is outrageous... even a minimial level of courtesy wouldn't go amis... Birmingham we need to stop this kind of behaviour in our City... bars, clubs and pubs are like ambassadors to visitors to Brimingham... i dread to think what people must think of Birmingham when they meet arrogant people like this
pub_punter - 12 May 2006 13:19
The pub: 10/10

The managment: shocking!

I was appauled at the way we were treated (i was with the aforementioned group)
I'm not sure if it was their intention but they made us feel so unwelcome.

Bitterly dissapointed!

A nice looking pub / bar. It is very unfortunate that this establishment is tarnished by the attitude of its manageress.
She should, at the very least, be sent on some kind of sensitivity / customer relations course.

As a group of 20+ people, we pre booked and reserved a room. We were told that when we were ready, food could be arrange. Yet when we were ready for food and tried to order some, we were told that we could not have any food, and would have to go elsewhere for food, but if we did so, the room we had booked would not be reserved.

As a compromise we decided to go looking for food in small groups, one leaving when the former group returned.

This is when the trouble began. When groups returned they were told by the manageress that they could not re-enter because they were wearing jeans, depsite the fact that 2 thirds of the pub were wearing jeans at the time.

After lengthy conversation, none of which was abusive or rude, we were given the choice of leaving or staying and leaving those who were outside, on their own. We of course chose to leave.

On leaving there were some choice words exchanged between the bouncers (defiantly bouncer mentality, who only became polite and "understanding" when they realised how many of us there were ) and the first couple of our group to leave the pub.

It is a strange coincidence, but perhaps only a coincidence that the manageresses dislike of us only manifested itself when one of the late comers, who happened to be disabled, arrived.

If customer relations and fair play are inportant to you, I would recomend you avoid this establishment.
bolerus - 27 Mar 2006 15:28
The pub itself was very nice and staff were accomodating until it became aparent that our group of 25 people, who had already pre booked months in advance a section of the pub to have a social meeting, were not welcome.

I'd understand if we were being rowdy and rude but we were all courteous and friendly to the staff.

The extra attention to accommodate our needs was beyond the manageress's jurisdiction and an attempt to compromise was not even made.

It's aparent to me that customer service is not top of the list, and being a manager of a public house myself I was highly dissappointed in the treatment we received.
Jo_Mack - 27 Mar 2006 10:37
Visited on 25th march 2006.

Pub's fine, but manageress is a rude and very obnoxiuos.

Do not go here and expect to be treated with curtious manners or consideration, especially if you have pre-booked a reserved area for 30 plus people.

And worse still, if one of your group is disabled and in a wheel chair be prepared to be TOLD to leave.

And if you intend spending the day there, say from 3pm till 11pm, as we did. Make sure your group takes a complete change of clothing as the dress code changes at 7pm.

And no matter how much you try to explain that some of you have travelled 500 miles from around the country to meet up, this rude, discurteuos and very bad mannered mangeress will be rude, discurteous bad-mannered and in one instance, utterly offensive.

I really like this place, reasonable choice of beers, spacious without lost that intamacy feel of a good pub, prices reflect the Broad St area, although you feel you get value in this place unlike some of its near neighbours.
glenn468008 - 20 Jun 2005 20:44
Located on the site of an early foundry and situated in a listed building, this is a pub full of dark wood and brass.
Friendly staff (not many of them though!). Weel kept beers and largers including Old Speckled Hen. Food available either in the bar or the seperate restuarant ranges from a simple bowl of chips to steaks and full blown meals! Reasonable prices and close to the NIA and International Conference Centre the pub boasat an exentensive collection of builders hard hats (collected from builders who used it as their local whne the Broad street area was being re-developed in the mid 1990's!).
No parking but a few outside tables overlooking the canal
