2nd pub of 4, this is an old fashioned large pub with exposed beams, it has a homely feel even though it was fairly empty on my visit.

Though my biggest criticism was that it was F'ing freezing.....it felt like the cellar door had been left open.

3 pumps, dispensing 2 ales...Wells Bombardier and St Austall's Trelawny. The Trelawny was decent, but it was so cold we drank up and crossed the road to the White Hart.

Hmm, both Guinness lines were empty, but redeemed itself by a good pint of Bombadier and nice white wine for my wife. Some of the clientele had obviously been in the pub a long time but they didn't cause us any hassle. Our favourite seat by the window has disappeared though. Still worth a visit when quiet as the pub has a lot of character.

Charles Wells pub in the attractive old High Street. The pub looks and feels "olde" - there's a homely dark atmosphere with exposed beams. The pub has been expanded - the Off Sales section has been removed, giving more seating room inside. Gets crowded and noisy on a Saturday night, and the music is played very loud, but can be more relaxing midweek. Has always been a popular and well run pub.

Recent refurb has regenerated into a great pub- the best in Hemel. Legend has it that its been around so long that ghost regularly appear there. Including Henry VIII heard laughing in the company of his beloved Hemel companion Jane Seymour.
