please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Empty and boring, but I don't mind empty if the staff are nice and beer is good. Much better than the Stoke for sure!
BestBeerBoffin - 1 Aug 2017 16:56
Well i've never had a smile off the bar woman here. I think she is foreign, very empty pub unless there is Rugby on. Bland but ok and a spacious beer garden
HeavyBeerPubDrinker - 8 Jun 2017 19:02
Had a half pint here. Nice beer garden in sunny weather.
BestBeerBoffin - 3 Jun 2017 18:12
Totally empty on a weekday afternoon indeed I was the only customer. Incredibly bland pub with bland real ale choices. Better than the Stoke though.
BestBeerBoffin - 12 Mar 2017 10:06
Not very original or interesting selection of ales. St Austell's Tribute was just about acceptable. Very boring on a Monday!! I suppose it is ok when it is empty. Basically a Rugby Pub!
BestBeerBoffin - 19 Feb 2017 21:04
Ok for a quick pint of Proper Job, but its very boring as a pub, empty and just shows sports on TV.
MrReasonable - 14 Oct 2016 17:44
Cripes ! Whats happened to this boozer? Used to be a good atmospheric pub, sport on tv plenty of punters friendly bar staff etc. But what a change! 3 of us watching the euros, every pint, and I do mean every pint, the barmaid pulled was under measure. Mine to such an extent that I thought she was having a laugh with me, it was a good inch from the brim. The bar manager was surly who seemed suspicious of his customers. I couldn't wait to get out. Left at half time never to return.
beernotfood - 15 Jun 2016 19:42
Decent range of beers, friendly Aussie bar manager and wall-to-wall sports. Yes, Rugby is the pre-dominant sport and the clientele reflect that as they tend to be toff British lads with their horse-faced posh women. They're generally in-offensive all be it a bit loud and pretentious . The courtyard and outhouse provide a bit of variety and relief if you want to get away from Rugby and sports in general. A nice touch is that the popular Guildford pub singer - Gavin & his guitar - is a regular fixture.

Compared to the bigger faceless pubs in Guildford the Tup is a nice change.
Minesapintaplease - 21 Feb 2014 14:23
A quick stop off pub for me, i'll have have the TEA or Surrey Hills. Shows sport on TB or go into the big beer garden. Nothing special but its clean and tidy. Worth a visit given it is handy to the town centre.
aleman - 7 Nov 2013 17:18
Can this website stop logging me out everytime I leave as it's quite annoying =)

Anyway, on another note visited this pub and it was enjoyable, only ale on was Surrey Hills but that tastes good and the decent beer garden was a nice enough place to be on a sunny afternoon. As others have mentioned this is mainly a Rugby themed pub but welcome to anybody.
EyeOfTheTigerBeer - 13 Sep 2012 18:19
Rugby and sport themed pub.

One bar serving the pub and its large outside drinking area.

Real ale is Sheredrop and Ranmore ale both from a local brewery, beer is well kept and the bar staff are pleasant and efficient.

Was very busy on my visit, a Thursday, which could have been due to the Euro 2012 semi final game being shown on TVs in the pub and in beer garden
beershot - 29 Jun 2012 16:40
Good pub, good food, happy staff, brilliant garden area and reasonable drinks
philli4000 - 5 Sep 2011 11:56
Went last Saturday at 8pm. Only one ale on - Youngs bitter.

Not at all busy but still took some time to get served
alecstewart - 2 May 2010 22:25
But whats the drinks like.
Lucy you sound so classy !!!!!!
ThePilgrim - 21 Dec 2009 16:54
i have to say..I LOVE THIS PUB!!! it's one of the only friendly pubs left in guildford that actually cares about it's customers. where as in most pubs it's almost like the staff hate you for ordering a drink..at the tup they're so friendly and always smiling and chatting to customers. me and all my girlfriends go there every weekend it's so good.
and boy do they know how to throw a party... i went to a micheal Jackson night there which was insane!! Also what they do for rugby fans is incredible, which is rare because most of guildford is dedicated to football fans. i think it could do with some work asethetically.. but i'd rather piss in their toilets(which now smell lovely!) than drink a cheap pint in spoons. it's worth paying that little bit extra for the atmosphere and sense of being part of something
lucy_south - 18 Nov 2009 22:11
Seriously run down for a while now - change it for the better and i'll be back.

PubWithTheGrub - 2 Nov 2009 15:27
I have been coming to this pub for 2 years but now it has really has gone down hill, you can smell the toilets from the bar and the food of REASONABLE quality takes forever to get to you and its falling apart inside and out I personally have stopped going since recent management changes i now feel like just another number since the assistant left and I never see the manager doing anything about the pubs upkeep ,So now I drink in a different venue this place will no longer receive my custom...

A no go unless you like cold service
outonthetown - 8 Oct 2009 16:04
Again, fair comment about the toilets. This pub needs a major refurb, starting with the toilets. Unfortunatly, I only am the manager, not the owner. All I can do is trying to make this pub as appealing as possible with good beers, good food, nice atmosphere and more activities than any other pub in town.

guildfordtup - 25 Aug 2009 17:12
Used to be good, but has gone sadly downhill. The plumbing seems to be an absolute mess and the toilets desperately need a refurb. And soap. It's a shame
spanky69 - 23 Jul 2009 11:39
Hi, following the last 2 comments, I just wanted to let you know that I can't agree more about the Thai food. That's the reason why we've moved back to a traditional English menu ... 7 month ago! Which brings this question: How long since the last time you've been to the Tup?
Any comment, good or bad is allways welcome though.
Regards
Francois, Manager
guildfordtup - 5 Jul 2009 21:21
Bit mundane these days.

Perhaps it needs yet another name change.

Thai food is only average.

Rugby pub as others have said and the staff need to cheer up.
best_pub_in_city - 21 Jun 2009 19:38
Good if you like Rugby. Not so good if you don't. If you like Thai food and i've eaten it here before, i'd suggest a Thai restaurant in town instead. Expensive and not the best atmosphere.
proper_beer_eating_chap - 21 Apr 2009 13:38
has a few beers thats something. okish
BigAleDrinkhead - 1 Nov 2008 18:18
Not too lively this one. The deuchars IPA is ok, and i'd recommend it to real ale fans. Personally I find this one a bit dull and bland, only 2/10 from me.
BestBeerBoffin - 3 Sep 2008 14:05
Popped in during a free Afternoon. Tried the San Miguel on tap, it came to 3.30. Very quiet in the daytime it has to be said. I'd try other nearby pubs for a more entertaining atmosphere. Service was ok though.
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 13 Aug 2008 15:27
Has been a great place but seems to be losing it now, lack of management presence, also beer quality has gone down and the price up through the roof.
Discobird - 2 Aug 2008 22:08
Good Thai food, San Miguel on tap. Friendly staff and a good size beer garden for when it's not hoofing it down. Oi loikes it.
makinpost - 19 Jun 2008 15:07
Nice pub for a quiet pint with some mates during the day or starter for an evening out.

If you want to look at under-dressed totty (as I do when I've had a couple of shandies) then you need to go some place else (and i do).
saucy69 - 25 May 2008 17:16
Agreed aleman one of the better places in town.
Pilgrim a bit harsh but i agree the name should still be The Spread Eagle.
stroller - 17 May 2008 14:15
Since we're not from the area, we had to rely on friends to help us find a good watering hole in Guildford. So glad we found The Guildford Tup. In ten minutes we felt like family, even though we're not rugby-mad. No creepy leering or obnoxious drunks to be found. I'll be back!
tcsmythe - 3 Apr 2008 05:39
There are worse pubs in town, yet also better ones too. Middle of the range.
anonymous - 8 Mar 2008 18:27
When i used this pub it was know locally as The Spread and it was a good pub,its now like drinking in a fish bowl totally non inviting.I would rather sit on a park bench with the wineo`s than in here.
And why do these oiks keep changing the names of the old Guildfordian pubs makes no sence to me
ThePilgrim - 8 Jan 2008 10:51
This pub gives the unfortunate feeling I am being watched. Maybe it is something to do with how empty if often feels and some of the seats being so close to the windows.

3 for a bottle of becks non-alcoholic would you believe!
aleman - 16 Dec 2007 22:51
Excellent Mix of people...just the right balance for a good night out although a little expensive. But after all it is a managed house!!!

Can somebody please supply a dictionary for callum251
anonymous - 1 Oct 2007 18:47
Recently become something of a live music venue. Drinks include 3 ales, deuchars IPA, bombardier and youngs
aleman - 31 Aug 2007 12:18
Oh come on that is harsh these guys have a nice pub with a cracking beer garden - we just need some sunshine X
chazp - 15 Aug 2007 23:48
SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS
Callum251 - 20 Jul 2007 23:40
Found the Thai food here to be of good quality, has a good quality chef
anonymous - 31 Mar 2007 14:10
Currently after bar workers here
aleman - 20 Jan 2007 01:19
the tup is great if your a rugby fan and have the time to get down there for to watch it with about 8 pints of guiness !
thats all i can say coz thats the only time i go in !!!
bmwz4 - 4 Jan 2007 00:49
Should still be called The Spread Eagle its an old Guildford pub,but its more like a bar now (shame).
Beersupper - 28 Dec 2006 19:44
Used to have some legendary lock-ins down here - back in the day!
mooty123 - 7 Oct 2006 18:02
Nice place to sit in the summer but drinks are overpriced compared to other pubs in town.
beergibbon - 5 Oct 2006 13:38
What a stupid name why not leave it as the Spread Eagle some marketing idiot some where thort it good to change (pratt)
anonymous - 29 May 2006 09:31
not nad i thought staff were flirty i like that. it made me feel welcome
derka - 19 Aug 2005 01:48
Was told this is the best pub in Guildford. Would agree the staff are the best - but not the pub.

Gents toilets need a refurb, food is average, seating is uncomfortable and music is tooooo loud.

Beer v expensive as well. Probably best time to go is the summer for a Pimms in the lovely garden.
anonymous - 24 Mar 2005 12:14
Excellent ponce burgers. Most of the seating was built by George Abbot himcelf circa 1492, and was aquired by the hallowed ram which satanically adorns every wall of this establishment.
Meaver - 1 Mar 2005 18:04
This pub is clinical. Ashtrays are whipped away before you've put your fag out. Bar Staff are terrifying. Frightened to ask for what you really want! BUT hey, at least you've got somewhere to go when RSVP is rammed.
anonymous - 28 Dec 2004 18:27
This place has gone stale. Where did the fun go? The prices have gone up exponentially but the quality doooowwn....
SBrook - 27 Sep 2004 18:28
God this place is rubbish. It was amazing for a while back there, but its beenthe same old rubbish for about a year now. I used to come 3 times a week, for an electric atmosphere in the pub or the huge garden - with some wild parties. Now? well there has been no change of events, music and anything innovative has just been left to stagnate. What happened here? I'd love to know.
BenDaley - 7 Jul 2004 15:27
This pub is certainly better than the Three Tuns or Pews in terms of the people but still a bit poncy. They show football and have an outdoor pool room. Not bad.
Gareth - 5 Mar 2004 12:14
HEY! To all those that say this pub has changed a lot, it has! BUT its all gone a bit frenchy.

They always used to open early for the rugby & put on a great party for anyone who asked.

I do recall a little Italian party in the Summer of 2002 that went on and kicked off in the garden until the morning came in!

Clean under the Sofa Seats!
Katie - 9 Feb 2004 10:34
Such honest comments.

Recently returned to Guildford after about a year away, hastily returned here as there was a great vibe about the place every night.

Everything changed, its not as welcoming and the crowd has changed a lot.

The food isn't as tempting, but its 'very guildford', I do remember getting a better quality than elsewhere here.

Just a bit flat these days!
stephen - 9 Feb 2004 10:29
Chilled, not overly cool but nice enough place. Possible to get a seat at 8 o'clock on a friday and people generally ok.
OpheliaImmortal - 23 Dec 2003 13:50
It's a great pub that has changed a lot recently! They have a license to show every rugby world cup match and will be serving breakfast for early matches! Great atmosphere. Come and find out!
Trouble - 14 Oct 2003 16:42
Used to be the best bar in Surrey. The old GM was a star, then they went and replaced him with a real stupid sort.. who has now gone. He gave us the pool table in the stable, and part nights to remember. The food was amazing under his control and its gone down down down. WHY OH WHY can't these company sorts in the city know when they have a good thing going, pay them more and KEEP THEM ON!
Liegh Remece - 19 Aug 2003 15:47
Recommend the curry house next door (Rose valley).
Vindaloo - 16 Aug 2003 08:41
Yes I got it wrong. Sorry. A local had told me that this was the pub in question, but a bit of research on the internet confirms that the Scruffee is quite right.
thaman - 16 Jul 2003 15:49
No it wasn't. The Horse & Groom (blown up by the IRA) was opposite the Library in Guildford, and is now a furniture store as they didn't want to make it a pub again after what happened.
scruffee - 9 Jul 2003 14:07
Has a sad history. This pub was the Horse and Groom public house that was blown up with loss of life by the IRA in 1974.
thaman - 9 Jul 2003 13:51
Expensive, cramped and up itself... At night it dreams it is in Leicester Square.
Matt Le Ross - 11 Jun 2003 09:05
best to go lunch times to enjoy their good food. if you want to chat to anyone avoid Friday/Saturday nights as the music is deafening. why does Guildford only cater for the under 20's????
Jules - 7 May 2003 10:48
Nice beer garden and a decent pint. The food is simple pub fair but tasty and good value. Worth a visit.
Angus - 14 Apr 2003 10:10

Campo - 25 Mar 2003 18:52
The doormen used to be psychos but they have got rid of them recently. A great pub to meet with friends and have a good night. Also not yet discovered by the masses from that attend the likes of Bar med, Yates etc.
jm - 17 Feb 2003 15:55
you have to go up 2 steps to get to the disabled toilet, quite astonishing.
Darren - 30 Sep 2002 13:28
Absolutely amazing. The GM is a star, and readily gats us all drunk & swinging. Fantastic new pool room in the old stable. Why Im so drunk on its amazingness im bothering with this! (hic)
drunk dan - [email protected] - 19 Sep 2002 03:42
The old Spreadeagle, it's been polished up and now run by the Tup people, has a fantastic big Garden, Pool Shed (with piped music!) in the backyard, and next to no neighbours. Live music becoming more of a regular feature. TV's, large screen etc...
Miles - 13 Sep 2002 15:08
Cool, clean yet cosy wooden interior. Huge beer garden out the back, brilliant in the Summer as have massive Barbeques every weekend, live djs, fire-jugglers, really buzzing atmosphere. On sunday nights, funked out hiphop and d&b with breakdancers. Reasonable prices and good drink selection.
