We had lunch in this Pub today and it was lovely. 7.95 for a burger and chips seemed a little bit more than we would have liked to pay, but when it came up I was amazed at the size of the portions! The chips were huge homemade chips and the onions rings were huge too. The burger was lovely firm and meaty, even the tomato ketchup and brown sauces we good quality ones from Tiptree and in a bottle! Not these silly little sachets you often get. I was extremely full up after. Will definitely be going back again!

Couldn't fault the beer or the service, but I do have one grump.

All we wanted on Saturday night was a pint. We didn't want to eat. But it was all but impossible to find a table or a seat that wasn't either reserved for diners or set out for eating. We ended up in the beer garden which was chilly and wet. I love pubs that serve good food--see my review of the Old Dog--but please, please, don't forget that a pub ought to cater for the beer drinker as well

Seems to have just changed hands, not what it was but maybe chance of becoming more a proper local and less a bistro pub once more?

Yes.Would agree with Muffin.Very comfortable pub in a small Essex village.Brewers Gold always on tap(which was the best you will ever get) with a changing guest ale.Didn't try the food but it looked very good.No problem with driving as there is an hourly bus service from Southend/Chelmsford until 7pm.Give it a go.You will not be disapointed.

Rather doubted the authenticity of the previous two reviews so decided to find out for myself as I've not been to this pub for a good many years.
Turns out the place is every bit as good as it is made out to be. Everything a pub should be in my opinion. The food was heavenly. No big screen or blaring muzak. A proffesionally run establishment where the customer is still considered and treated as a guest (something which is very hard to find these days). Very friendly and considerate locals. No effin and blindin here and a great place to take female company. TOP NOTCH !

Visited this pub last Saturday with two mates. It is one of the most friendly and welcoming pubs I have been to in Essex. Even the dog was quite well behaved!

The beer was in perfect condition (Mighty Oak, etc) and I could easily have stayed all night there. The food was absolutely exquisite, I had the seafood pie.

The staff and management are very friendly and have a great sense of humour which rubs off on the locals and visitors from outside the area.

I thoroughly recommend this pub, if it's a great pint, superb homecooked food and a warm welcome you are looking for, I guarantee that you will not be disappointed!
