A nice local pub with familiar faces evertime I go there. Decent juke box and beer with a very welcoming manager and staff. Worth a visit for a Guinness or six.

I used to visit this pub all the time and from reading recent comments i imagine it is as good now as it was way back when!

The place was always packed and is the best 'local' pub i haver ever visited somehow attracting a wide range of people, it could be a little intimidating when you walked in and the whole pub looked at you but this was genuinely because of the incredible community spirit which revolved around the pub.

Was a unique and excellent establishment, hope it hasn't changed!

Pikey clientel - not the nicest decor inside, don't see a lot going for it really......
richakn - 29 Jun 2010 19:43
Pros: A proper 'local' and very relaxed
Friendly staff and landlord
Good, reasonably priced Thai food
Best pint of Guinness in Wandsworth

Cons: The substantial price hike on the drinks in the last six months hasn't gone unnoticed, sadly
shoegazer - 5 May 2010 19:38
I'm not a great fan of the pub itself - it's noisy, has too much sport on TV and it generally attracts a bit of a rabble - but the Masterbrew is excellent, and that's the main reason I go there.
gatomalo - 19 Oct 2009 12:07
Good service, excellent Guinness, gerat food (Thai).

The customers are a motley bunch, but looh out for the good-looking Geordie on crtutches! He's a love machine.
geordiegit - 22 Aug 2009 13:50
I like this pub, it's just a genuine boozer where there is a lack of them in Putney. I wouldn't take my mother there as I'm not she'd approve of the old bloke sitting at the end of the bar who managed to get the F word into pretty much every sentence he loudly uttered, but the Thai food smelt good and the Spitfire was good (3.25 a pint). Lot's of TV's for sport.
marcovanpenners - 8 Jun 2009 14:52
Not bad, small Pub serving good thai food.

Service was excellent

2 pints Masterbrew Friday lunchtime. Couple of groups of what looked like office colleagues out for Christmas. A few muddy swearing workmen. Food portions looked big. Girl behind the bar looked fed up. Simple local pub...but there seems to be a missing ingredient somehow

Great pub, although I must disclose an interest here as they are the sponsor of my Saturday football team! As previous reviewers have alluded to the beer and the food is top notch. On a Saturday afternoon they have loads of TV screens all showing sport and if, like me, that's your idea of a great relaxed way to start a Saturday night, then pop along
Hammo1978 - 17 Oct 2008 12:50
Not bad at all..

Have done this place on half a dozen occasions. Eaten a few times and the noodles are good at around 5 a time. The beer has been fine and the staff are pretty nice.

Not a pub I have been in after working hours really but definitely worth a stop if you are passing.

Best place for a sup in Wandsworth (which admittedly isn't a difficult challenge). Always a decent pint, reasonably priced beer and the Thai food is good too if you're feeling peckish.

A simple, cosy London boozer that's not hanging up it's arse like so many other places, especially the anaemic, raaraa Queen Adelaide across the road.

Great pub for a few quiet jars, and if you don't want your evening ruined by a crowd of braying yahs, then slip along to the Pole!
shoegazer - 17 Jul 2008 13:13
Great local boozer, cracking jukebox, TV screen in the garden, Thai franchise very reasonably priced and very good quality. Also good roast and other 'normal' pub food available. Superb venue for any live sport esp anything involving the Irish. A world apart from the Wheatsheaf, and with the Cats Back and Queen Adelaide so close it definitely makes the trip worthwhile (although you might find it hard to tear yourself away from this one once settled). Bring back the Elvis Nights.

Thought I'd try out this pub as an alternative to the Bricklayers in Putney as I'm getting fed up with them not having beer, plus all the decent barstaff (except Patti) who made the pub special have left - as have quite a lot of the locals. Seemed quite a nice place but nothing special, especially on the beer front though didn't try the Guinness which previous reviewers raved about. I liked the jukebox but it can get a tad infuriating when there are three tv's showing different programmes competing with the music. I'll give it another try, and may even try the food, but didn't think the pub was as fantastic as previous reviewers have found it - middle-of-the-pile.

Going to this pub more and more. The garden has been done up to provide facilities for smokers. Good pint of Guiness. Food is Thai and excellent. Locals are friendly. Extensive sports coverage on 4 sreens. Staff are polite friendly and efficient. A cracking boozer which I would have no hestitation in recommending.
brixtondrinker - 30 Jul 2007 15:14

I discovered The Hop Pole by chance nearly a year ago and have made regular visits ever since, even though it is now a bit of a trek from my new house. Its my home away from home, my favourite place in SW London for a drink, delicious Thai food and good company. Locals always up for a laugh and a chat, cosy feel to the place and the bar man is fit!!! Which is always a bonus... Go there and i promise you you will want to return...
janeybee - 22 Nov 2006 21:41
Hell of a lot better than either the Queen Adelaide or The Crane. Really good beer, seems to be benefitting from Young's move out of the area. I didn't have food but what I saw and smelt was very good. I think I saw Crispy Aromatic Duck!! Nice bar in the middle of the pub too.
owenjones - 2 Nov 2006 14:58
I have never been to the Hop Pole Pub as yet but I met Colm back in August 2005 and he was an awesome guy, someone you would always want as part of your life! I am arriving in London in March 2007 and I hope to experience the Hop Pole myself!
mairz - 8 Sep 2006 12:20
I love the hop pole. the people are so friendly and if you're looking for a proper homely pub, this is your place! Also, the chicken wings on the menu is out of this world! I'm actually having cravings as I'm writing this comment. Bar staff are very friendly and theres always a bonus when theres a juke box in the pub. You can finally play all those cheesy songs you've always wanted to listen to. I love the hop pole, I actually moved closer to it!!!
tikka_bombay - 23 Aug 2006 16:45
Great pub. Not dull at all. Friendly staff but in particular the landlord is brilliant, very welcoming from the 1st time you step foot in the place. Go there again and your are on first name terms. Excellent Thai food that is always good and very reasonable. Found there is a good mix of people from young to old and from all parts of the globe from Irish to French to Kiwi/Ozzies. Good place to watch sport too, no matter what your interest is. I'll definitely return.
anonymous - 10 Aug 2006 21:36
Being of Irish stock myself (and even if I wasn't)I have no problem with your Irish friends or anyone else's for that matter. That comment wasn't made as a criticism it was a comment that there seemed to be a slight Irish theme and custom in the pub. Admittedly, with hindsight it was a poorly executed comment and it may even be inaccurate but it was one I was entitled to make without being accused of being some kind of racist thug. That said I apologize if it did cause offence.

I stand by my opinion on the interior (dull = uninteresting) and the beer on my visit.
mitomighty - 27 Jul 2006 19:42
i am a regular in this pub and a local englishman.mr mitomighty or mouth all mighty who obviously has some sort of a problem with our irish friends (otherwise he wouldnt have felt the need to mention it) should stick to his bnp pubs.the hop pole ,i have always found welcomes people from all nationalities and walks of life with open arms ,as for the beer it is always second to none and i know for a fact he would have got his money back if he had complained.as for very dull inside im not sure he had his full sences about him when paying his visit as the interior is on the contrary ,very warm and bright especially since the excellant refurb.
anonymous - 27 Jul 2006 18:42
definitely didn't have that experience. It was very dull inside. Full of Irish people, which is fine. The Master Brew was 'orrible, I didn't drink it and I didn't fancy the masterbrew smooth!!! Certainly not!

From the outside it looks great.
mitomighty - 27 Jul 2006 14:02
Wandered in here at the weekend and was delighted to find a nice cosy pub and friendly staff. Nice to see a landlord that will take time for a chat and appear genuinely interested in you. A very pleasant sunday afternoon experience, and I'll go out of my way to drop in a say hello again.
LeBooze - 18 Apr 2006 17:06
Nice friendly pub. Definitely one of (if not the) best in the area.
anonymous - 26 Mar 2006 22:02
does what it says on the tin but i'll not go overboard - it's fairly unique because it is 'a pub', though, which is pretty bloody rare!
evers. - 29 Jan 2006 00:33
An absolute winner of a pub. Everything that a pub should have and more.
anonymous - 9 Jan 2006 15:04
My round-the-corner pub for a good blast of football and friendly banter! A proper boozer!
Dannie - 13 Oct 2005 21:35
Great pub, a true irish jem (if there is such thing in london)
Flawed - 21 Sep 2005 16:53
Great Guiness, friendly bar staff (especially the lovely Katrina). Colm the gun`nor is a real Irish character (watch out for the bailing twine he uses instead of a belt). Food is Thai (delicious). All sporting events covered. All in all what a pub should be. Highly recommended.
brixtondrinker - 8 Jul 2005 13:00
Cracking Pub.
anonymous - 18 May 2005 15:40
Absolute winner of a pub. Great staff, punters, food and beer. I stumbled across this pub by chance and have to say I will be visting again when I'm in the area. If your in the SW15/18 area i suggest you get yourself down there.
anonymous - 16 May 2005 14:36
Great little boozer. Certainly the best in Wandsworth, maybe even my favourite in SW London.
Brian - 5 Nov 2004 12:30
Despite all the compliments below, it is distinctly unwelcoming to non - Irish people.
John - 29 Oct 2004 10:38
This is by far the best pub in the South West London area if not the planet. Your always made feel welcome the craig is great and the Guiness is even better. If ya fancy food there is a brilliant Thai menu which is great and always hits the spot. Every sporting event will be shown on one of the many screens. Colm and his wonderful staff have done a sterling job here bringing you the utimate pub experince. 10/10 rating
Tom - 2 Oct 2004 12:27
The Czechs are very fussy about their beer but I have to say I was never dissapointed in this place. The place is cosy and friendly, craic is mighty and helpful staff fantastic. Moreover, nobody wants to kill me for putting blackcurrant into my pint of Guiness as I try to get used to this black stuff. Hurray to Colm for he is doing a great job.
chichi-kvakva - 1 Oct 2004 19:38
The Irish version of 'Cheers', the Hop Pole has three or four of its very own 'Norms' who regularly keep their seats warm and their palates wet. If you want a pub "where everybody knows your name" then make your way to Wandsworth and sup a pint or two of the black stuff. With its very own affiliated cab service (who are used to the odd drunkard) ready to whisk you home should the singing, dancing and general merriment prove too much, this pub's a treasure! And the landlord's quite fit too!
Mr Oliver Pint - 2 Sep 2004 14:29
If i had a sleeping bag and a few changes of clothes,i would spend my whole weekend there. The staff are top class(especially the good looking Monaghan fella who does part-time work)the beer is good, the food is top notch, the entertainment is varied yet always enjoyable. If i could,i would marry the hop pole and have its babies
Bamboo - 30 Aug 2004 18:10
This pub has been my home for the last year, by far the best pub i have drunk in and believe me there have been a few. the craic is non stop and the good humoured banter flys thick and fast. Colm the guvnour is a great fella and he is backed up with fantasic staff. this pub has everything, and it really does feel like home when you pop in there after work. watch out for the young people who sit by the door dont get too freindly or they"ll bore the pants off ya 10/10. God i miss it.
Leon - 30 Aug 2004 10:28
This is by far the best pub i have been to, the freindly staff make you feel welcome the moment you walk in. Theres a great mix of young and old, and everybody gets on well, if you just enjoy a pint, great food and a garaunteed laugh then this is the pub for you. i walk past at least ten pubs before i get there, and even enjoy the long staggerd walk home. get yourselfs there!!
Dinky Phillips - 30 Aug 2004 06:21

datz royate - 24 Aug 2004 17:35
Among the dogs and shouts and roars from a Belfast piece of furniture (a regular customer) the Hop pole is probably the cosiest and friendliest pub I ever been in London. Try the hurleymans or a pint of smooth for excellent beer but the Guineass is unrivaled by anything Ive ever tried, even in Ireland. Food is both local and Thai, served by a friendly Thai lady. Prices are excellent with mains not setting you back much more than a fiver. The clientele is international, you could meet a man from Leitrim or a woman from Jamaica in this place and the craic is always the same. The landlord is from Navan, Ireland, but dont fear the strange dialect he speaks with, every customer is made welcome and becomes a friend by their second or third visit by all the staff. Sports coverage is second to none, if you asked for international tug-o-war live from Katmandu, it will probably be on one of their channels.
Try a Sunday session, Sunday roast, live sport for about 5 hours, meet 10 new friends, good conversation, some dancing later to the jukebox, a few Thai chicken wings washed down by 10 creamy pints of Guineass.all this at one great pub, the Hop Pole

Paddy deLovit - 24 Aug 2004 16:04
Cracking pub, creamy pints of stout that are unrivalled in London, professional, friendly bar staff. Sound crowd and nobody in here takes themselves too seriously.
eye_of_the_beerholder - 12 Mar 2004 12:55
