user reviews of The Kings Arms, Wandsworth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Last year it became a branch of Grand Union and I went there and found the staff to be jolly and enthusiastic, an improvement on the Kings Arms. Alas on subsequent visits those staff have gone and the place seems to lack something, a shame all the same though.

Thank God it closed down....great place but the staff was useless!
Hoping for something better!
(smelled of piss too)

It's not a bad pub I guess, although there is nothing particularly special about it. I go there reasonably often and find the service very, very slow - even when it's not busy. They never appear to be in any rush.

What a beer garden must be the biggest in london. Was there withmy work colleges 4 weeks ago friday and it was packed out in the garden. Nice pub will come back here again.

Went there on Saturday to watch the All Blacks play Ireland and ended up staying to watch the Springboks play Wales. They had a big function on in the backroom that all migrated out to the garden after the game finished to eat and apparently the Birthday boy had asked to put on a spit roasted pig for him and his friends. What a great idea. Its worth dropping in for a couple of pints and a feed. - I love it!
Friendly bar staff, big screen TVs for sport. Food is great good selection and what a beautiful garden such a great sun trap hidden in wandsworth. You could get lost for hours. Love the draught peroni

This pub is an absolute Gem, the interior is great, excellent projector screen. The beer garden is one of the best I've seen and the bar staff are friendly and helpful. The menu is small but the food is good, simple food cooked properly and tastes fine. This pub is perfect for summer days with a group of friends or significant other.

Wow i did not realise the BEER GARDEN this place has, I moved to Wandsworth about 6 months ago and have walked past the pub lots of times but never went in. Out the back is this huge beer garden, you would not even think there is a busy high street out side because you cant hear any cars or noise, Its great... Im coming back.

I went to the kings arms last week had the 7,50 lunch special, salmon fishcakes with chips & a pint of beer. How can you go wrong. Food was great, service from the girls was pleasent and happy. Will be back to check out other specials.

The Kings Arms has changed hands and it seems everything good about the place left with the old management (inc the chef). The food was DREADFUL. Roast beef was practically stewed, stilton and squash risotto could have been a pot noodle, roast potatoes were microwaved.

Only positive is the beer garden - lovely to drink in during the summer. But that's not enough to drag me back there again.

I only posted about this pub on the 17 Apr 2007 but since this date the pub has new owners/managers and things have gone downhill a bit.

The service was really poor and although the burger I had was pretty good one of our party had a steak sandwich which was too tough to eat. The food took about 40 minutes to come and they had run out of some spirits.

Will walk a bit further for a pub lunch next time!!!

This seems like the best pub I have been to in Wandsworth so far. Nothing outstanding in the service, food or beer but spacious and a great garden which will get a lot of use in the summer by me no doubt :)

Beer garden running down to Wandle a great asset waht was once a fine Victorian gin palace has been knocked around a bit by the brewery. Some of the best and cheapest Ordinary locally.

I love the Kings Arms, favorite beer garden in London. BUT, with a new chef, gone are their chicken wings, oh how these things were good! Still go and have a pint or two.

I believe I may have been the 'irritatingly dim barmaid' (read tenant) that had the pleasure of joegreens visit last week. Had he given me the time of day to explain the staff situation which caused the kitchen to be closed, rather than swearing at me before walking out, maybe he would get the chance to enjoy our pub another time.
anonymous - 20 Sep 2006 17:56
This presented a very poor impression, with an irritatingly dim barmaid explaining that, despite the board outside claiming the contrary, they were not doing food.

Nice Youngs pub on the High Street, close to the Brewery ( well it's still a Brewery at the time of posting, isn't it !) . Modernised but not really spoilt, note the original wood pannelling which still gives it a pubby feel, even though food now plays a more significant role.
Recommended to be included in any Wandsworth crawl - as it was indeed on ours last Thursday

I love this pub! Fabulous food, friendly staff & the best garden for miles. Bring on the summer!! The only thing letting it down is that some of the customers dont seem to understand that fresh food has to be cooked. It takes time. Things will sell out...the menu changes every day. And on busy days, yes, there will be a delay. If you look around, like I did a couple weeks ago, at least 30-40 people had all walked in the door in the space of about 5 mins of each other. I cant think of any kitchen or bar that can predict, or keep up with that. It's not like you cant relax with a beautifully kept pint, or refreshing glass of wine. And most main courses come with complimentary homemade bread to keep you ticking over anyway. So dont take it out on the staff, they are just trying to maintain the VERY high standards...what's so wrong with that? At least they do it with a smile on their face, unlike other pubs I could mention...

An apt name for the previous poster, 'Babble' indeed. I work locally to this pub and frequent it most Friday lunchtimes, and other days as needs be. The Special is always good, not variable at all.

Yes, the landlady is 'efficient', a somewhat clinical description perhaps, but the rest of the staff are on the ball too! It can get busy in this pub and staff like these are appreciated.

Oh, and the blonde-haired barmaid is from Adelaide, not Sydney.
cpt_mainwaring - 25 Mar 2006 09:54
An efficient landlady helps one to ignore the high prices of the food, e.g. 7.50p for the club sandwich. The Special can be variable, shame they don't have the St. George's Ale, which Youngs are right to be proud of.

Looking forward to the summer and the improvements being done to the large garden at the back!
MrBabble - 22 Mar 2006 14:22
Does very well kept draft Youngs ale (particularly good Special), but no draft Youngs lager which is what I assume Dannie was getting at...although you're not missing much there as they do have the usual suspects on tap. Wine is reasonably priced I beleive, especially for the quality on offer. There's no point in having a lovely meal (which you can also have here) with a cheap nasty glass of wine.

I completely agree...very cosy inside now that it's getting colder, but still a few people in the garden insisting that summer isn't over yet!

All in all, a great friendly pub, with fabulous food.
anonymous - 14 Oct 2005 08:52
A great chilled out place with a fantastic big garden for use on sunny days and a cosy inside fire for cold ones. Wine fairly expensive and very upset that it doesn't do Youngs on draft despite backing onto the famous Brewery of Wandsworth. I love this place but the beer situation and lack of jukebox let it down. It's getting better but still much room for improvement.
Dannie - 13 Oct 2005 21:37
It used to have wallabies in the garden. They used to hop about.
BigPete - 30 Sep 2005 14:33
Worth more than a flying visit I think! Food is fabulous & staff are friendly (but yes change very often as 'anonymous' pointed out). Garden is fabulous & they are very lucky to have 2 real fires for the winter time. Overwhadowed by The Queen Adelaide is a bit harsh, although I'm sure everyone is interested in trying the newest pub on the block which may have hurt trade the last few weeks. It's good for competition to have more than one clean, welcoming pub in Wandsworth...something we are not used to! I'm sure they will bounce back.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2005 21:48
was the best pub in wandsworth, but recently over shadowed by Queen Adelaide, the food is still of a good standard and staff are ok, just change to often, to get that personal feel. Garden is an oasis in one-way system. Worth a flying visit.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2005 18:18
My new favourite pub in Wandsworth!

The new tenants (been there almost a year) have done fabulous things...very comfortable now, garden is huge & an oasis in the middle of the one way system. Beer is now not just drinkable but very well kept. New wine list is varied & reasonably priced. And the food has gone from dodgy thai to proper, fresh, homemade, modern british (I think thats the best way to describe it!). Staff change frequently as they do in most pubs, but I'm yet to come across anyone who hasn't been friendly, welcoming & helpful.

Be warned...word is getting around so get there early if you want a table in the garden (or by the fire in winter!). It may look like a typical corner boozer but inside it's really something else!

Nothing special about this place. Normal High prices that come with Young's pubs, no atmosphere, sulky staff..need I go on?
TheWizard - 20 Jul 2005 04:26
Definitely now one of the best pubs in the area. Have eaten here several times and have always been impressed. Good atmosphere, never too busy and huge beer garden out back. Only slightly negative thing is that the kitchen always seems to be closed over long weekends.
matt123 - 27 Jun 2005 22:10
Seems to have changed landlord since I last did this one - and now appears all the better for it. Much busier ( Sunday lunchtime ) than I recollect from last time and there is more of a pubby atmosphere - even though food still features heavily. A surprisingly large garden, given the Town Centre location, is a bonus in summer. This pub is now worth visiting - this didn't used to be the case several years ago.
JohnBonser - 22 Mar 2005 13:17
Lovely local pub next to the Young's brewery, serving good ale in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Never gets too busy, even on a Saturday night. A good place to relax and read the Sunday papers.

Wonderful pub with a great garden. One of the best staffs iv ever come across, so talented and good looking.
Sarah - 10 Jun 2004 02:10
This pub just changed owners, so now it has been done up and the food is fantastic. Very freindly atmosphere, will definately go back there in the near future for a meal!!!

Next door to the Youngs brewery, just been taken over by the team that run the Chelsea Ram. redecorated in a gastro pub type way but keeping the feel of the place. Good beer (Youngs of course) and wine. Menu is good and it has a massive garden overlooking the River Wandle for the summer. Worth a try if you fancy a change from the Ship/Alma.
