as one of our locals, and been in there a lot of times, one of the 'better' pimlico pubs, we had agreed to go there for nye2013 and celebrate altogether (small group of us). I had my hopes up clearly, as the result was a total disappointment! there is so much potential with this place, even a 'dance' floor downstairs for private functions..one thinks, given one of the busiest nights of the year, they have a fancy dress theme for the 31st, a dancefloor downstairs and a large plasma tv upstairs. what are the chances they might get a dj to spin a few tracks , have a late license and possibly have some music on in the main bar and stream the BBC fireworks live, at midnight, and at least we'd have some indication of the countdown. Oh no, none of that..apart from possibly a late license. Just seemed like a dodgy locals night in, a rushed 10second countdown from someone's watch, everyone too p1ssed to care, bar staff all mashed anyway, it was a mess. when i asked if they could turn the tv on, i get a rude 'naahh mate!' why couldn't they have got into the spirit a bit more? it's only for 1 night of 365 days. At least i thought we'd get a little boogie on, a few drinks...
needless to say i'm crossing them off my list. with all the tourists passing by, they just don't care - used to be a half decent place i hear? it was never one of my favourite pubs at all, but now i'm done with this place.

Staff are all boys who are clueless about customer service. Beer is ok but suspect they have no control over this.

Paid my over 4.00 here for a pint. and wasn't pleased. This is like a rabbit trap for unwittingly tourists. They're dragged off the street and then turned upside down so their money falls out on the none-too-clean floor. They're given some warm beer and a some expensive chips and then sent back to Omaha and Kyoto to tell their friends and families what thieves are London publicans.

Some of the bar staff are nice in here, but not the manager, who never smiles! The drinks arent bad, and the bar is a good place to hang out, however dont use the toilets unless you have a gas mask. An evil stench comes from down in their cellar.

Cracking pub... good mix of regulars at the bar, after work drinkers and tourists popping in. Well run with first rate bar staff, decent grub and a good comfy 'feel' - table service too. Anywhere better in Pimlico? Not in my book.

Failed attempt and a very shabby gastropub. Used to be good before the refurb some time ago. Very plastic pretentious cliental, typical of that type of pub, will never return

One London pub that seems to be bucking the trend of falling trade is the Marquis of Westminster, a corner pub that is by far and away the best "local" of any of the pubs in Pimlico. In addition to its own loyal band of followers The Marquis thrives on the passing trade provided by tourists staying in neighbouring three star hotels. There is plenty of banter from the friendly and long serving bar staff who provide not only a degree of degree of intimacy and continuity, but also snappy table service for those eating from a simple, not extensive but excellent value for money menu. Timothy Taylor Landlord and London Pride sell heavily but there is also a long wine list.

I wasnt that impressed with this place as I found the barman to be inattentive and the clientele to be pretentious.

Pride and Spitfire were available during my visit along with a standard and premium draught selection. There is a staircase leading down to a restaurant and cocktail bar, but I passed up the opportunity to take a look.

The plasma screen was off and there is no Sky Sports, but there was some sitar music playing through the speakers which isnt really on my list of things I like in pubs.

On a plus note the barmaid was friendly, but I will not be returning.

Nice pub, pleasant friendly staff, limitied ale selection, but the TT Landlord was not too bad, though the London Pride was not good at all. The food look ok, though i didnt try it. Quite alot of suits, the poncy estate agent types, of thats what they looked like and large number of tourists. Much better than the Prince of Wales which i tried before.

I should add the reason I know about the comings and goings and timings so well is that I have been using the place regularly ever since Youngs/Charlie Wells started to first mess around with the Buckingham in Petty France, and then completely ruin what was a lovely old proper pub.

The transformation of this old corner boozer over the past couple of years has been staggering. It's gone from lurking at the bottom of a rank pile of Pimlico pubs to being head and shoulders above the rest.
Maybe it's the tourists, who previously stayed away in their droves but are drawn in from neighbouring hotels by such innovations as table service and food that while not cheap is what they expect a trad pub to provide, that have upset those who hanker for the dark old days, but the Marquis has moved on.
The Timothy Taylor Landlord is a prime pint, while the London Pride is popular enough, especially with tourists hooked on the name, to ensure its turnover, essential in a non Fullers house.
Local office workers tend to dominate at lunchtimes and from around five, followed by a steady stream of tourists and locals
Food is served 12 to 3 and 5 to 10, while closing time is 11.30 Mon - Thur with midnight extensions on Fri and Sat.

Rating of 2.6? I don't think so - it's not a great pub, but it served a reasonable pint ot TT Landlord (also with the ubiquitous London Pride on draught) and had plenty of happy-ish looking customers enjoying their eveing out.

Devoid of all atmosphere and character... the usual mix or staff who barely understand english and prices that make your nose bleed... very disappointing

Any pub with a sofa is a wrong un. End of story.
nickthefish - 10 Jun 2008 09:13
This used to be a right .... hole, unrecognisable !!
Decent beer ( Landlord ) and pleasant staff & customers, yes it's expensive but if you do a crawl starting at the wetherspoons at Victoria taking in this pub the Jugged Hare & The Morpeth you can pop in here for one on the way
lovesong - 31 May 2007 18:53
wow... !!!! speachless. but about time..
cannon - 18 Nov 2006 09:10
What a transformation!
Now a great little pub with great pub grub, wine list and well kept bitter. Apparantly they are renovating the restaurant downstairs with cocktails...cant wait
Best pub in an area devoid of them!

The Marquis of Westminster has reopened and has been totally refurbished, with a fancy-looking new bar, new tables and chairs, repainted walls and trendy sofas. It also serves Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord'. So far so good. However, a small (175ml) glass of house wine will knock you back at least 50p more here than in any other pub in the area. Guess we know how theyre intending to pay for those sofas Disappointing.

Currently closed for refurbishment.

Dan,

The next time you're in the area try the Constitution or the Jugged Hare. Both are only a few minutes walk away and are perfectly good boozers (friendly / welcoming / decent food & beer etc.) The only interesting thing about the Marquis is the Watneys Red Barrel mosaic on the pavement outside the side entrance: the rest of it should be demolished asap.

Dont bother: not even out of morbid curiosity.

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime, I don't know the area so that's my excuse for choosing this pub plus it's looks OK from the outside. Very unsavoury group of Irish men filled half the bar (most of my family are from Dublin I should add), a pokey and tatty interior and I'm afraid that's all I can say. This is a strange part of London.

So bad it's almost good, some quirky characters to observe.
brodie - 16 Mar 2006 17:48
All of the comments are true. Could film an episode of The Sweeney here without changing anything. How it survives is a surpise. Bizarre
anonymous - 20 Feb 2006 21:23
quite frightening to see yobs with no shirts on guzzling outside. we stayed in this neighborhood on holiday once, and would cross the street to keep from walking past.

Terrible pub. Horrible beer. Rude staff. Aggressive punters. Topped off with a karaoke that is a painful assualt on the ears.
anonymous - 22 Feb 2005 15:12
Went to this pub last night. Never again. It's an old man's pub and is far from welcoming. The karaoke only played stuff from the 1950s. If you are in the area go to The Page instead
anonymous - 21 Feb 2005 01:02
Enter at your peril. The worst pub in the Victoria area with the worst karaoke in London
anonymous - 17 Feb 2005 13:44
wow...enter this pub at your peril...greeted by total silence (ok a bit far fetched..the juke box was playing) and getting eyed up by what looks like to be the local mafia...scary.... maybe its time to lower the age of the bar maids..70's slappers is a bit too much to handle ....ok may be i am being a bit mean...it does sell beer...even if it is out of date....
cannon - 26 Dec 2004 16:28
Dreadful little boozer serving no good beer and with aggressive customers. Why go there instead of one of the several decent pubs in the Wilton Road area?
beeronaut - 27 Jun 2004 09:34
