please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My second stop along Beckenham High Street was this fairly characterless, but large pub. There are multiple handpulls, all with Doom Bar. I opted for a fizzy cider. The windows are good for people watching, whilst there is at least one pool table further back. Probably worth walking on by this one.

A few years back Mitchell and Butler's sold the goose chain, but kept this pub meaning they needed to rename it so it became the White Horse. The only real change is it's slightly more expensive now (still pretty cheap) and it now shows Sky Sports and has a cuddly toy 'claw' machine.
Large premises as used to be an Iceland (rare example of a pub which replaced a supermarket). Cheapish food, it's a good place to visit if you're seeing a film at the cinema. Also opens early for Breakfast.
Beer quality varies, sometime it's great, sometimes awful, sometimes non existant
Not as busy/rowdy friday and saturday evenings as it used to be.

Not a Goose outlet anymore, but is still the same for all intents and purposes. Plump, friendly women behind the bar. Plenty of places to sit in peace. A couple of real ales on tap and cheap draft lagers. Non- pretentious, bog standard chain outlet really. Don't know what the fuss below is about really.

Hmmmnn, definitely avoid like the plague at weekends. And most of the week too. Peesheads paradise. Fantastic place if you like feeling intimidated by the other clientele.

So long as you avoid Fridays and Saturdays like the plague then this is a fine pub. It's nothing special but the price is so low you don't expect it to be.

Dump - avoid.

Usual Goose fare. It has had a bit of a refit but it's essentially the same pub as before. A mixture of office workers and dodgy characters who are all there because the beer is cheap. The food isn't all that good, the beer is average but it's cheap so who really cares?

Beer quality adequate. That's about it. Aggressive, threatening clientele, some so drunk that it MUST hasve been illegal to continue serving them (and that was at 6:30 in the evening!). Grafitti scratched on the tables, a very unwelcoming place. Avoid.

Saw to dwarfs getting iut on on he girls toilets. Yuk! Will not be going in here again

Very nice bar staff warned me off the Bass which clearly hadn't been pulled through all day Dark and shabby, and of course not a patch on 'Spoons.

Young, very young. Not much atmosphere. Can get smokey. Just a cheap place to drink cheap beer... But if you're with a big group of people and just want to drink and chat, sometimes that isn't too much of a liability in the end.

Flat atmosphere.
Flat lager.

A pub for people who don't like pubs.
Pointless.

Have to amend my comments (very)slightly. Went in during cloudburst just to avoid the storm and was actually served by a well-mannered and efficient woman. Perhaps things had taken a turn for the better.

Hopes dashed though when barman Lurch appeared from the back a little later wearing his trademark frown.

Great virtues is that prices are low (there is also a good selection of beers and the toilets well maintained), but that's about it.

The staff seem to be selected for being incredibly slow and sullen. They might as well have 'I am a sad loser, I hate the world and everyone in it' on their tee-shirts.

To be avoided unless:

a) you are very hard up at present

b) you suffer from agoraphobia and enjoy an airless atmosphere permeated by tabacco smoke - the 'air conditioning' just spreads it more efficiently round the pub

c) you are a psychologist/sociologist researching poor motivation among bar staff

Had many a nights out in here although haven't visited for about 9 months now so things may be different now. Certainly not the place for a quiet evening, and agree with the Wetherspoons comparison, but in fairness like any Spoons it serves its purpose and I've met a lot of decent people in here. The bar staff are all friendly pretty much, although some of them didn't speak much English. Decent range of drinks, including a few bitters, and the bouncers, although seemingly different ones every week, were always sound, and also go around turfing out trouble makers. Toilets are OK as well. I can understand why people would have reservations about this place, and yeah it's probably the least sophisticated place in Beckenham, but there are other nice pubs in the area if you really can't handle it.

If your over 19, then your to old for this place. Full of chavs and drunk 15 year olds.

Good for a fight though anytime after 9.30.

Avoid unless your a complete moron like the majority of its clientele.
FattusBlokus - 5 Feb 2006 11:56
Beckenham's Wetherspoon variant. Expect to be proffered stolen aftershave, chinese DVDs and have your handbag stolen. Full of scumbags.

Pretty much well summed up by all the previous comments. Cheapest beer in Beckenham so therefore atracts all the worst types. Definitely avoid on Friday & Saturday night. If you do fancy a quick pint though, pop in there at a quiet time of day with a friend (I say with a friend, as if you go in there alone some drunken loser will be chewing your ear off for the remainder of your stay!) as the bitter is really very good.

At least it's cheap! It really lacks atmosphere and just doesn't feel comfortable for some reason.
StuartB - 3 Dec 2004 11:31
Big shed of a pub - tends to be full of scum who migrate in from the less celubrious regions of SE London (Penge?). Only suitable if you like cheap beer and no atmosphere.
