Recently refurbished with new management - concentrating on food.

Whole experience ruined by screaming, grisly children. This is otherwise a good pub.
As a smoker, I can sit downwind from you so as to courteously not affect your visit. I can't sit 'downsound' of the snivelling wretch you elected to bring to the pub as you believe your lifestyle choices shouldn't be affected by having kids. Leave your progeny at home if they don't know how to or are too young to know how to behave.

Visited this pub by chance on Sunday without reading the reviews. Was last here about 5 years ago and it was a bit run down then.
So very impressed with its transformation and that it had a full compliment of Westerham beers.
Depressingly I was driving and couldn't sample the ales but my mate thought the Summer Perle was top notch.
Food was very good with a good selection for a Sunday menu.
I shall hope to be back soon and take advantage of the 3 x thirds of pint samples for £3.45.

13/07/2013 - single hop WGV excellent (as was the Summer Perle).

Visited 4 times recently. All beers tried were good and on each occasion one was outstanding (Finchcock's once, Summer Perle once and Spirit of Kent twice). Staff are friendly and the food is good. Can get very busy resulting in longish waits for the food. I agree with Gramsci that it lacks a space to just have a drink when you cannot make use of the ample outside seating. Food offering would be improved by a couple of signature "destination" dishes (a la Wenlock salt beef sandwich)

Went for lunch there yesterday. Despite the cold and the snow it was pretty much full. During the day it concentrates on food and I have to say they do it rather well. Their fish and chips were near faultless and the steak pie was very good. As you would expect, the ale was very well kept and the pub interior has been refurbished and redecorated without losing its character. Downsides? I suspect the focus on catering means that if you just want a pint or three, finding somewhere to sit might be a challenge and the wait for the food to arrive was too long (35 mins). Nevertheless, it's another great addition to Westerham Brewerys small but perfectly formed portfolio of pubs.

My first visit since it was taken over by Westerham brewery. As expected, all Westerham ales on including Spirit of Kent, British bulldog, Finchcocks, Grasshopper & 1965. Spirit of Kent was easily the best in my opinion, they offer a "Tray" of ales (3x1/3rd pints for £3.40) so you can easily try several. The pub has been refurbished and was warm & welcoming on a cold December lunchtime.
The menu, hmmm, a bit pretentious for me! Went looking for sausage & mash or pie & chips and found pigeon breast with pomegranate salad & "Le Rustique camembert tart with walnut cous cous": You what? The prices were not outrageous but we chickened out and went for baguettes which were fine.
The place was quite full with a lot of reserved tables so hopefully they'll make a go of it.

This pub is well worth the trek. Went there on Tuesday and was immediately impressed by the lovely feel to it and the setting. The staff were lovely, really friendly, nice and helpful. Food was fantastic, top notch, good size portions.. this chef deserves 10 stars for his cooking skills. The food is much better here than in many good restaurants I've been to up town. Atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, a pub you can really relax in and enjoy a wonderful evening. Everyone was extremely friendly and the staff went out of their way to make us feel at home, they couldn't have been more helpful and friendly than they were. It really is a beautiful pub in every way, best I've been to in years. I spotted a very well known celeb in there having dinner too....well chuffed to have found such a gorgeous pub and will def be back soon!!!

Both Spirit of Kent and Finchcock's in good form. Very helpful staff who allowed us to eat inside with the dog and provided water bowl. Sunday roasts were well prepared with good quality meat and were generously served (around 11). Plenty of seating outside. Open plan layout slightly gives the feel of more of a restaurant than a pub. Overall I was impressed and the pub is a definite alternative to the very good Royal Oak at Staffhurst Wood.

Following the news that this pub had been given a total renovation and was also owned now by the Westerham Brewery, we thought we'd give it a try. Very impressed we were too.

Three hand pumps, one session, one premium and one strong - seems like common sense to me but why doesn't everybody do this? There were a few lagers and the like too...........and a strawberry beer (WTF??).

The food was excellent - not particularly cheap but the prices seemed right for the quality - the haddock and chips was spot on.

The service was very good and very friendly, the decor bright & cheery, and the loos had been done very well too. There are one or two bits of decorating to finish, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this and we will be returning before long.

We all concluded it would make a great place to stop for a quick pint and a bit of lunch after a walk or cycle ride on the Chart.

Congratulations!!

As of April 2012 this pub is now run by The Westerham brewery. They serve a range of Westerham Ales, Belgian beers and genuine craft brewed lagers. They offer a good range of homecooked food, but as I turned up on a Monday, I was unable to sample. Check out Westerham Brewery website for more details.

Called in the other day. Friendly enough place. Westerham's British Bulldog was excellent. Stowford Press, likewise. Wish I hadn't been driving

Village green pub popular with walkers and classic car fans. Building is in a lovely location but could do with some TLC, the small garden is a real sun-trap on a summer afternoon. Black sheep and Adnams on, both OK, not great. Just a simple pub-type menu available, food was fine but service was a tad slow.

Previous lady could have taken a bus into Oxted taking 10 minutes. Also, being a local, it takes a maximum of an hour to walk to town and that's at a leisurely pace! So she expected the chef to stay on to cook meals for 2 adults and 2 children and be paid the extra time, probably an hour I'd say at 12 to 15 an hour. How much would their meals have cost I wonder, and the profit from those I can assure you wouldn't even have covered chefs wages - get in the real world and plan you country walks better.
paulelvis - 13 Jan 2010 20:16
Nice pint of Black Sheep bitter.

I think the previous comments are a little unfair, if they arrived late they were late ! The chef could easily have left the kitchen on time - is that so unreasonable ?

We followed the Time Out walk and from Hurst Green and arrived at the pub at 5 minutes past 2pm to be told no food was served after 2pm, we were two women and two children, we then asked where the nearest place for food was and were told Oxted. So we walked the next 2 and a half hours to Oxted.
This has to be one of the most extreme cases of unhospitible pubs in the UK.
It isnt as if there are any other places to eat in the vicinity and we were on foot.

Never go here.

Stopped for Sunday lunch. Very nice food and not too expensive. Has been tidied up a lot since we were here last about a year or so ago. Recommended

The worst wine list I have ever seen
All drinks are very expensive
Staff / owners not friendly or welcoming
will not be going back until changes hands again

Worst food for miles around! Fairly atmophere free also. Sad really as it is in a nice place
bigbadbill - 3 Oct 2007 14:29
yet another under utilised pub ..a great area and a nice building..no atmosphere and no imagination from the owners /tenants..another one destined to change hands no doubt..mind you there aren't many country pubs where you can get a hot meal for 6.95!
stickman - 7 May 2007 06:03
Visited one evening and sorry to say my experience not as good as previous reviewers. Solitary young female barstaff stood and stared rather than saying "can I help" or "what are you having" and was further unhelpful when asked about food. The meal was ok but at 6.95 for Cauliflower Cheese and chips a tad expensive. I decided to leave having listened to an hour long CD of a certain pervert who escaped justice recently. The pub itself is in a great setting and has unrealised potential. Better customer management is needed.

A traditional old fashioned pub serving good beer and decent food at a reasonable price. Members of the MG Car Club meet there for a very informal gathering on the fourth Sunday of the month at 12 noon. Non members welcome to join us.
leftyrhompson - 22 Feb 2007 16:52
A pleasant country pub with real home made food. Quite quiet when I visited but was made welcome and enjoyed my drinks and lunch

Was passing for lunch which was not great value and with not many non diners in evidence we would not have stayed for a second pint but then the heavens opened. Lacks atmosphere but the (wet) garden looked reasonable
