If you like living in Hollyoaks, this is the place for you. I will say the staff was very friendly and drinks were reasonable - but the people, my goodness, the people who go there are absolutely astonishing.
I came here on the recommendation of an acquaintance and was absolutely amazed by the trashiness and nastiness of the people there.
Tacky, tacky, tacky.

Went here for my recent birthday party dinner and was very impressed. The restaurant is very swish and the food service and ambience superb. After our meal, we headed down to the main bar and we boogied till 2am. The staff were very good, the drinks priced well and the dj played some classic old skool disco tunes. We all agreed that a good time was had by all. Will dfinintely return.

Nice bar, decent promotions (Happy hour runs from 4 - 8pm Friday and Saturday), lively atmosphere. The restaurant can be expensive but the food is worth it; they also have attentive friendly service and a pianist tinkling away in the corner. The basement club (South Pole) is an abomination: fill your living room with tacky lighting, one girl and 20 moody wide-boys and you have a decent approximation.

What a place! We went for New Years Eve this year and last and had a ball! The place was transformed into 3 floors of dancing, and the atmosphere was friendly and lively. The DJ was plastered on both occasions, but that just made for a more amusing night! The drinks are a little on the pricey side: £3 for a pint of nat's pee and it was £20 to get in, but worth it. The ladies behind the bar (and indeed in front of it) were very pleasing to the eye, and we will definitely be visiting this coming New Year's Eve. Top night, not too crowded, prompt and attentive bar service, and - dare I say it - friendly bouncers!

Came here to watch the Croatia, En ger land game (11 Oct) and was pleased to easily get a seat. The place was empty despite 3 large plasma screens showing the match. £2.90 for a pint of Star and £3.50 for a Magners, so make what you want from that. Made a welcome change from going to the nearby Auctioneer to watch an En ger land game and unlike the last boozer I was in (Phoenix, Victoria), they had the commentary blaring out to generate a bit of atmosphere. I might come here again to watch football when in Greenwich, but see my previous posts about this place!
Regarding the game, I initially missed Paul Robinson's farcical howler for En ger land though. I had turned away from the screen to tell my mate at the bar I did not want ice in my Magners, assuming Robinson would comfortably clear the ball. Why do people follow fads by drinking Magners with copious amounts of ice, when it comes out of a fridge anyway and the ice simply waters down the drink, usually numbing your throat in the process??

I am a jazz fan so I had lunch in the Novotel along the road and heard some great free jazz. I am new to the area so after a wander around Greenwich I walked past the bar and went in to hear the "Jazz". The manager should be arrested under the trade discriptions act. The musicians loved themselves but were terrible, the staff couldn't care less and the majority of customers were up their own ar*se's

We came here Saturday night before 9ish (2 Sept) after watching the En ger land game in the nearby Auctioneer. Fair enough, I had my Charlton top on and didn't expect to get in, especially with local rivals Millwall playing at home today. Yet the bouncers tried to tell us, 'mixed couples only' on arriving at the door!?! They were having a larf, surely. Central London zone 1 policy in Greenwich?? The jokers. We eventually got in, as I wore my mates t-shirt and he just put on his jumper, but I was not impressed with the bouncers attitude. 'Mixed couples only'!?!
Inside was devoid of any vibrancy or female talent, so we went downstairs to the South Pole bit. Awful. It eventually became too packed with blokes and for the non-smoker, it became so smoky, my eyes started to sting. As I have said before, too costly, too crowded and too cosmopolitan. There were a few nondescript women in the corner near the toilets, but most of them were so far up their own @rse. One even had the cheek to tell me her mate 'was not interested', when I was simply dancing close to her. Given how packed it was, there was not much room for me to dance elsewhere! Anyway, I had as much chance searching for H-Files in the North Pole, as Andorra scoring against En ger land earlier that afternoon in the footy. See my previous review which I feel is quite apt. I will not be coming here again, unless with a 'lady-friend'.

Stopped off for a quick pint with my wife on one of the hottest days of the year so far, the air conditioning was turned up full, just what I needed, as was a few nice cold pints of Staropramen. We left when they started clearing a dance area and setting decks up. Not somewhere I'd come at night or in winter, there's no ale on tap and it's expensive, but good for a few cold ones on a hot summer's day. Nice friendly barmaid too, which always helps

I agree with the first review about the North Pole, in that it is a livelier place to impress your partner, given the appeal Greenwich generally has towards couples, i.e. the plethora of restaurants. For this reason, I like the North Pole and it does a job, given my girlfriend enjoyed her time there Easter Sunday. For a Friday or Saturday night out with the lads though, I find the club downstairs (cleverly named South Pole) too costly, too crowded and too cosmopolitan. Can also get too smoky if that is not your cup of tea. Yet this place is quality for New Years Eve if you live locally, as all 3 floors are open and the vibe has always been great the years I have been. I did also enjoy watching the 2006 Brazil, France World Cup quarter-final game outside with the lads. The food here is supposed to be excellent. Overall, a great to visit as a couple or watch football with mates, but I would not otherwise bother.

Horrid place, we went downstairs to the South Pole. Full of rudeboys kissing their teeth trying to act the big man. They let it get too packed. Drinks were also very expensive

Had a few beers here the other night as a friend's band were playing (OK - more than "a few" but who's counting? I certainly wasn't...) On the plus side the music was great, the place felt pretty lively for a Sunday and the staff were attentive and very friendly. On the down side I'd like to see some proper ale. I had a damned good evening though and would certainly head back if I was in the area.

This was a fantastic old fashioned boozer in the late 90's with an authentic interior. It had nice bitters and a pub theatre upstairs. I Saw an Oscar Wilde play and Shakespeare's The Tempest here. Somehow I doubt it's current clientele would know much about Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Am I right in thinking it had two bars? Anyway, I wouldn't bother going to it nowadays. It's just plain boring.

I've been drinking in this establishment since the day it opened. It is brilliant. The restaurant in particular is outstanding, they are the only restaurant other than chapter two that are in the michelin guide and that are aslo very highly rated in every other quality publication. If the previous reviewers consider the customers chavs because they wear expensive clothes then no wonder they feel out of place - they must be the real chavs! This place is always busy, has very good dj's, serves excellent food and drinks - what more could anyone want! I cant wait for the world cup this year now that they have 8 plasma screens!

The main reason I joined this site was because I ran the North Pole PH on Greenwich High road London from 1980-85. Took it from a quiet pub of dart players and Saturday night gin drinkers to a thriving Real Ale Free House. We had A theatre group that used what is now the first floor restaurant. The clientele where varied and colourful. Anyone remember little old Flo, an Irish lady that grabbed the best looking guy every night to see her across the Road. Not bad for over 80 years old. We even had a few legends. Mr."Tickle the ivories Holland" and the guys from "The Squeeze" (although in those days I did not know them from Adam). It's a shame to read what it has become now.....in my day it was a REAL PUB. There you go......
|
Like sitting outside in the summer but as mentioned below this place is full of knob end rich people with bad taste who talk VERY LOUDLY and thus the atmosphere suffers sometimes.
Dont ever come here for a drinking session, you will have to remortgage your house.

Pretentious over priced hang out for wannabe Paris Hilton types. Passes itself of as the "Classy" pub in the area but it is full of Chavs and well helled ponces. Avoid it like the plague if you like a proper pub. 1/10 for laughing at the nouvell riche
|
This pub is awful, second only to St Chris's for Chavs. This place is done up like it is a set from a third rate RnB video (complete with microscopic VIP room ffs!) The beers are alright and are different from your bog standard pub but just the same as any over priced bar round leicester square, though I have heard good things about the food. However, DO NOT order spirits in there, they gave me the most woefully short measure I had ever seen when they thought I wasnt looking!
The clientele is awful. Basically designer chavs (Think Lacoste, Chaps, etc). Last time I was in their was a woman in with one of those small little rat dogs like Paris Hilton's got - and she blended right in. I mean if that doesnt underline the type of wannabe bar this is I dont know what does.
All that having been said it is not a bad place to go and watch the football without having to put up with a crush.

Hello! I am ALI BABA from New Jersey. Yhis pub is the best. After having a nicely poured drink with the Mrs. we waltzed upstairs for a lovely and well-priced orange duck and seafood meal. We sat by the fireplace and will always maintain the North Pole as a wonderful memory. We now live in New Jersey and when we return to Greenwich, it will be our first stop. The owner, Osman and Tam were really great guys and even ran out to get my car because of the weather. Ali Baba and George

Really great restaurant/bar/club. fairly small, but good atmosphere, wicked cocktails, a vip room and a cool little club downstairs(south pole)... what more could you ask for?

Not the kind of pub you would go to if you wanted to drink real ale, but a very friendly and relaxed bar. Sells Staropramen and the best cocktails in Greenwich. Quite a large bar, larger than the Guildford or Ashburnham, with a private section. Also has a restaurant upstairs which does some of the best food in Greenwich and Blackheath.

The sort of place you'd go if you wanted to impress a potential girl/boyfriend "Look, I come to this place so I must be loaded!". Staff are reasonably friendly (probably due to the amount of cash you hand over) but the pub is very small and you can forget about the club downstairs, you'll have more room in your local broom cupboard.
