user reviews of George IV, Chiswick

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visiting old haunts - stop 2. Looks like it's been refurbished, an oasis of calm from the busy HIgh Road. Pride was ok.

Decent friendly staff on my visit. London Pride was a bit flat but I enjoyed it. Few other Ales and my son said the Fosters was good.

Seats outside enable you to watch the world go by.

Varied clientele.

I really like this pub, but...
Why on earth does the management think that badly-played piano is an attraction on a Sunday afternoon?
The girl is marginally better than the bloke; yet, both are just practising their mistakes/trying to vamp/doing anything but playing simple, good tunes well.
I love music: this is why I moan when I hear it parodied in this fashion.
Sadly, I visit this place only when this noise pollution & ruination of peace & quiet occurs; & I keep forgetting that this seems to be a weekend fixture...
When I complained, the staff were reasonable about it; but also said that a lot of people appreciated the music!
I can only say that there must be a lot of tone/pitch deafness & naff taste in Chiswick, then.

cool pub also near fullers brewery and this pub serves a similar range to the mawson arms, London Pride, ESB, Honey Dew and Chiswick Bitter FRoM Fullers themselves, Seafarers Ale and Spring Sprinter (Seasonal) from Gales and Chimay from Belgium.

'Muckymac' Thank you for your recent review x3??? We pride ourselves here at the GeorgeIV to giving customers what they want. Of course sometimes it is impossible but we like to think we get it right most of the time. We cannot wait to see you again....
Many thanks
Lisa

I really like The G1V, & it probably is the best pub in Chiswick!
renzarov - 11 Dec 2012 13:13
Fullers pub on the High Road that is fairly dark inside. Football was being shown on the TV. Only the breweries own beers were on offer - Pride, Red Fox, ESB & Chiswick. Service was friendly and professional. I was even asked if I wanted to sample my beer of choice before buying, and that was without even asking. I was quite impressed. Not bad for a Fullers pub.
blue_scrumpy - 18 Sep 2012 20:24
A proper pub with a good mix of proper people. Great for watching sport, for a quiet pint. Have rarely eaten here and from memory strictly average. Good staff and well managed (plus excellent Pride)
guymond - 15 Jan 2012 20:11
Best overall pub in Chiswick and possibly the best Fullers beer I know. Unfortunately trying to please everyone doesn;t always work, but they do as good a job as any pub I know.

Best Pub in Chiswick

This is my ''pop in for a quick pint to kill an hour'' pub in Chiswick, which I use 3/4 times a year. Beer choice obviously Fuller, my favourite is the Chiswick bitter, which never seems to be on. Pride (not my fav), ESB and usually one other when I've been there. Watched the cricket there last summer on big screen, which was good. Haven't eaten but imagine standard pub fare. Always happy to pop in when passing for a pint or swift half.
mally_drinker - 6 Jan 2011 15:49
love this pub! used to come here years ago when I was a poor student and now have moved back and so happy to see the old place still going strong!! few changes but all for the better. Great for live music fans (me) and sports fans (hubby) and still the same cosy feel and great service! Don't ever change!

I'm not going to rate the George IV because I haven't actually been in and it would be unfair, but I did want to comment.

The other half and I went for a beer in Chiswick last (Saturday) night and targetted the G-IV because of positive reviews here. But we had to turn away because of the extremely loud band.

I'm not criticising the band--quite the opposite; as we passed the All Bar One up the road they actually sounded rather good, but it was obvious as we approached the door (and although it's not a complete deal breaker, bouncers on a pub door do rather put me off) that we wouldn't be able to hear ourselves think and would be ordering beer by sign language.

Neither, you might be surprised to learn, am I criticising the loudness. Rock n roll should be loud. I'm just putting it out here for information that there might be a loud band in the G-IV on a Saturday night. On another night I could have gone in and enjoyed the show, but last night was about a couple of pints and a chat

So we went to the Old Packhorse instead.

Very good boozer witha great little comedy club at the rear. It gets very busy at the weekend! Recommended.

Large Fullers Ale and Pie house on the main Chiswick High Road, slightly set back from the road.

It lacks the internal opulence of many of the City based Ale and Pies ( eg - Old Bank of England, Counting House), but the faux traditional look that Fullers have gone for here is not unpleasant, although the inevitable sofas in the front part of the pub by the large plain glass windows do jar somewhat.

The pub is home to the "Headliners" Comedy Club where various stand up comedians perform in the large function room at the back and attempt to be funny. Lovers of the Jonathan Ross / Russell Brand style of "humour" may wish to consider booking tickets for an evening show on Fri/Sat.

On my recent Saturday lunchtime visit, the full range of Fullers beers was on and the London Pride was in reasonable form. This pub seems to attract a younger crowd than the Old Pack Horse and has something of an impersonal, chainy feel to it, but, as Chiswick is not exactly over-endowed with good pubs, you might want to give it a go.
JohnBonser - 15 Jan 2010 13:30
nice pub, friendly staff, the door staff let it down when they are too eager to get you out at the end of night, ruins a chilled night out.
Will return, but during the day, or maybe just not stay until it closes!

A rare, traditional-ish pub among the many modern, food-centered bars along Chiswick High Road. Fuller's have obviously done the place up a bit at some stage, but it retains a good selection of alcoves and other seating areas. Also has a decent patio garden out back. Six real ales on, including an excellent pint of Discovery (which at 3.00 was a bit cheaper than I was expecting for the area).
rpadam - 16 Sep 2009 21:20
BEEN DRINKING HERE FOR SOME YEARS NOW AND WILL DRINK HERE FOR MANY MORE TO COME, THIS IS A GREAT PUB AND TOBE HONEST I HAVE NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS AT ALL JUST POSITIVE THINGS, GIVE IT A TRY.
dave27 - 7 Sep 2009 17:54
As a drinking pub its good but the food on a Saturday night left a lot to be desired. Looked and tasted like it had been left over from lunchtime. I'll still go there as its a half-decent pub.
mines2pints - 17 Jan 2009 00:40
The only pub in West London we could find that stocked the mythical Fuller's Red Fox. Good stuff.
wizzard - 24 Oct 2008 10:28
Called in for lunch today. A decent selection of 5 well kept cask ales was available. For food, they specialise in a wide selection of pies although other options are available as well. The lumberjack chips are very nice and very filling! Reasonable prices for both the ales and the food.

The pub's a decent size with the courtyard area at the back as well. A handy location being on the main road. I would definitely visit again.

alexw - 9 Oct 2008 17:09
Not as upmarket as many of the pubs around Chiswick, which is no bad thing. Good range of Fullers Ales, but the service is a bit patchy. Getting for a receipt was a tricky affair and when they told me to return for it in 10 mins, I think they (wrongly) assumed I wouldn't bother.

However, there's lots of room and various nooks and crannies in which you can feel fairly cosy with your group.

I don't generally drink wine in a pub myself, but bought one for someone else and it was 4.35 for a 175ml glass. This struck me as expensive, but perhaps I'm out of date on that....

Upon my visit to the George IV I found 4 barmaids behind the bar. One was cleaning cutlery whilst another two were counting stock and the forth was having trouble using the till. After about four minutes of me standing there like a mug a local that was waiting for his whisky to be topped up lost his patience and shouted at them. A stunned barmaid approached and asked if I wanted anything. I asked for a half of Carling and was served a pint.

The usual lagers were available along with ESB, Pride, London Porter and Discovery. There was a very nice display of Pride bottles, cups and glasses behind the bar, but I wonder how long the punters had to wait to be served whilst it was erected.

Its a very big pub with a patio garden and some seating outside at the front. At the back of the pub there are some stairs leading skywards which I think had more seating. There is a raised area at the front between the entrances with some tables and chairs at the windows. A bonus was that they do have a dart board.

Apart from the staff being oblivious to the customers I quite like this pub, even though 3.15 for a pint of Carling is a little dear.
Strongers - 25 Apr 2008 13:41
Had a couple of good quality Fullers ales here last night with the lads after a game of football. Discovery & HSB were on form and enjoyed all round. Busy, but not overwhelming atmosphere.
SteveinLondon - 27 Sep 2007 09:22
Crap.Went to see a mates band in the back room on a Thursday night a while back - so far so good - only problem was the Big tosser Aussie barman who started coming around at 11:10pm snatching peoples (Full) pints that they had literally bought from HIM 5-10 minutes earlier and still LEGALLY had 10 minutes left to drink - he threatened one (Now very famous ) musician with violence for refusing to give up his pint - at which point someone who shall remane nameless stuck the nut on the Aussie Mug and he had his nose split open.A joyous occasion.
anonymous - 12 Sep 2007 03:35
great pub - ignore the latymer boys and godolphin girls we are all too busy watching David hemmings in blow up - Mr orme - wots the cricket score sir?
hardnoxandurtysox - 25 Aug 2007 01:35
Better than the all bar one next door.
ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 14:55
Fair selection of lagers (If overpriced) and a moderate selection of ales. The food has never disappointed, nor has it particularly excited. The staff, although polite, have never become in any way familiar despite many years of patronage. The pub does have a dartboard which is usually put to good use and is a redreshing change to the rest of Chiswick in which gastro pubs have all but killed off any kind of pub sports. The pub is popular and usually has a good atmosphere but it is to be avoided on a football night unless it is warm enough to make use of the beer garden or you are interested in seeing the game. However, the real strength of The George IV is its back room. This little gem, hidden away behind a set of double doors next to the toilets, plays host to a fantastic and good value comedy club that, every so often, attracts a big name comedian. There are also a couple of good monthly live music nights such as Wired on a thursday and Blue flowers on a sunday that always provide a good night and have hosted and continue to host some seriously talented acts such as Sam Beer, Laura Marling, Jamie T etc (all can be heard on myspace.com). All in all, one of the best pubs in chiswick. Choose the right night and you'll have a blast!
dourauldscots - 31 Oct 2006 12:45
I always confuse this pub with the Packhorse & Talbot up the road. The George, however, is a little more refined, but only slightly, mind you. The George is a little darker and tighter, if that makes sense - rammed at the weekends. Seems to attract more of a Rugger crowd, and I've felt at least 17% more relaxed at a table here than at the P&T. But as far as Chiswick's concerned, the George and the Packhorse nearby are easily bettered.
Ruby - 30 May 2006 20:45
Its a decent high street for boozing - Chiswick, and this is one of the better boozers here, decent size,...so easy to lose youself and kick back. As for the coke problem in the toilets,..thats a bit of a unfair accusation towards our soft drink guzzling brethren,..lets be evenhanded here,..i saw a geezer take a pint of Speckled Hen in there once,...And theres no mention of a fowl problem in the toliets is there! All im saying is,..lets keep it fair. Only joking a'course,...nah seriously i've a mate with a real coke problem,...he drinks that diet shit with the lemon already in it!
kmcs - 23 Mar 2006 12:42
Nice pub, nice layout, nice menu, nice food, freindly efficient staff. Pity there is a TV in every corner showing sport, you can not escape it.
PurpleRocker - 11 Mar 2006 19:13
Been drinking in here for a couple of years, but it's losing it's appeal for me. For the length of time I've been drinking there, I'd expect a chat from time to time. Staff retention is good, and the staff tend to do stuff together on days off.
That being said, the staff can look quite scruffy (unshaven, "bedhead" hair, etc.), and on the whole they're professional and attentive, but it feels like an Aussie bar (virtually all staff are Aussie or Saffa, etc.).
Food is great. I eat here loads.
As commented previously, it's a Fullers pub, so you pay Fullers prices.
As a Licensee myself, I notice things other customers may not, and there's a blatant Coke problem amongst some regulars in the toilet cubicles. The same guys that stand at the bar "bantering" with the staff, usually swearing loudly about England v Australia in Cricket, Rugby, etc. Quite off putting.
Graam - 12 Sep 2005 13:19
Good and big Fullers pub that always feels like there's a lot going on; I've only once not gone in because it was too damn full. It now has a big space out the back where they have jazz gigs. Years ago I used to run a performance poetry venue upstairs at the GIV, but they've expanded since.
beeronaut - 31 Aug 2005 22:22
A very good pint as you'd expect from a Fullers house and a nice enough pub. Just too damn BIG for my personal tastes though. Some of the staff can be a little unwelcoming too. Nice big screen for watching footie though.
realalesnob - 10 Jun 2005 14:20
Great pub. A tad dear but all Fuller's pubs are. Very busy on a Friday and Saturday night. The best pub on Chiswick High Street by a country mile.
CheekyShepherd - 29 Mar 2005 00:51
Splendid pub as ever - and a rare sighting of a guest beer, Jennings Cumberland Ale, last Saturday.
This pub is highly recommended and is likely to prove even more popular than ever now that Jack Stamps over the road and The Crown and Anchor are no longer open
JohnBonser - 22 Mar 2005 13:26
Not been in there for ages but was a good old boozer, is Tom still running it ???
ChelseaLes - 3 Mar 2005 12:11
Indeed a very good pub with good food (albeit a tad expensive) and good beer. Service is usually very prompt as well. Cant fault this place in general.
Lagertop - 23 Jan 2005 18:48
Great pub, fine beers and they always make an effort to serve you quickly. Bonus is the Headliners Comedy Club in the hall at the back of the pub every week-end...
Alan - 14 Nov 2004 17:23
great birds too
Russ - 10 Sep 2004 14:38
Great pub, good service and a place ot go relax or party, an all round great atmosphere. Try th ecomedy club, went a couple of weeks ago and loved every minute of it, theres even table service.
This pubs got a bit of everything and deserves every good comment it gets.
robin garderner - 27 Aug 2004 14:52
Decent pub, nice London Pride, and they make an all round effort to please.
Dave - 16 Jul 2004 17:04
Nice place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon drinking with a lady friend on one of the big Chesterfield sofas at the back. Apart from that its pretty crap, really! Not a great place to go drinking with your mates. Its hard to say what it is exactly, but there's something not quite right about the place.
Johnno - 30 Jun 2004 16:13
Superb pub. Great comedy club, good beer, good atmosphere and shows all the footy without attracting the chelsea mob. Fantastic.
Will - 29 Jan 2004 14:30
Looks like a pub, smells like a pub and by golly it acts like a pub. "Garden" is a giggle in the summer and somewhere to escape to in the winter. Great beer.
Will - 27 Jan 2004 23:59
I like it here. Don't ask me why, becasue it does get very busy at weekends, but it's big enough to cope. As traditional as a large and popular Fullers pub can be, and with the fairly recent additions of a comedey club and a late lisence it has established itself as one of the better Chiswick boozers.
Good for: all sorts really.
thenationofjames - 2 Dec 2003 13:46
Good ales, and ok (ish) atmos but the worst Sunday roast I've ever had - hardly any of it; expensive and luke warm. Drink here- don't eat here!
Tim - 9 Sep 2003 10:38
Nice pub, mobbed at the weekends. Strange thing about Chiswick is that the Hammersmith kids come up here to drink in a nicer area, and they're hard to escape, and this place is no exception.
Pleasant enough though.
Ruby - 5 Aug 2003 14:10
good lively pub. sit outside on a sunny day & watch the world go by.
millym - 26 Jul 2003 20:59
Nice pub. Good beer. Pleasantly lively. Very strange selection of vegetables with the Sunday roast though. Hope you like carrots.
anonymous - 9 Jun 2003 16:47
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great beers plus a rediculously handsome manager. What more do you need?
Bret Prew - 2 May 2003 01:58
