your standard chef and brewer chain pub. A couple of decent beers on tap though, and all in all not a bad place. not offensivly bad, nothing special.

How disapointing. Firstly despite ring the number for over a week there was no reply. It actually took an email to get a response.
Table booked. On arrival we were shown to a table after one had been cleaned.
Wine order was taken and arrived. So far so good.Evenually our food order was taken. The starters were very nice. Mushrooms & chicken skewers mmmm.

The main course's Venison pie & Mixed Grill. Venison Pie was served with thick
cold gravy!

The mixed grill would have been if it had all the ingredients.
No mushrooms, no lamb chops.

Finally on going to the bar we found a shortage off staff and ran out of beer and they were going elsewhere to get a keg of beer.

I have admired this pub/restaurant for some time but will not be back !!

3 real ales available, all in decent condition,.A large, classic chain pub food, menu, but the portions were very small for the price charged, and the food was decidely average..

This pub started out extremely well...but has been a victim of it initial success. However it has slipped and it is still slipping. The drinks have become extortionate in price and the quality of the food has dropped. You could actually see people counting their change in disbelief, as the drink prices registered. It will be another pub that slowly dies until someone notices that you cannot simply get fewer people to pay more to stay the same profit level. A big pity, as it started so well.

The food is exceptional at this pub. The Valentines menu last night was very good. The honey roasted duck with port jus and rosemary potatoes was possibly the best meal I have ever had and the duck starter and dessert were also out of this world. The food at this place is always excellent and I can't understand how they ever got any poor reviews. Would highly recommend.

(An addendum to my post of 25 May 2008.) We thought we would see if things had improved. Beer (Bombardier) OK, starter adequate, but of the main meals, mine was mediocre (and bad value), and my wife's was, she tells me, "the most disgusting food I have ever tasted in a pub". AVOID.

hmm, i think some of you are being quite judgemental. I live in Chesham and i've been to the Boot and Slipper quite a few times. The way it's always been is that you find your own table, someone will give you your menus and you order your food and drink at the bar - simple :) The lighting is lovely and it gives a really nice atmosphere. I think it's a really good place to go for a relaxed and comfortable evening; don't go if you need to rush! That's just pointless!

I mentioned my experience to a friend who happens to runt he Queens Head in Chesham. She said she would NEVER go back to the Boot & Slipper after her experience a few weeks ago - they tried to speak to the manager about it but he was uninterested and they walked out!!

were you on our table????? we had exactly the same experience that night. Had to wait 15 mins before anyone seated us,even though we had booked, were told we had to order at bar although it was after 6pm. in the end they did serve us. Was told on the phone that there was plenty of choice for vegetarians, turns out there are abt 3 dishes with asparagus in, so it's ok if you like asparagus! Waited an hour for food, and then abt 40 mins for them to ask if we wanted dessert, by which time we were all fed up. The only good thing about this place were the people I was with and the wine went down quite well!! This place is shocking and the service is terrible. Will try the swan in old amersham next time for food as the bar staff are excellent there so i'm presuming the standard will be better by a mile.

I went with a group of friends to the Boot and Slipper last night. I can say strongly enough how ridiculously BAD the service was!!!! The food was mediocre at best, portions were small and it wasn't cooked as specified (steak).
We waited 15 minutes to be seated at a table that had been reserved for us and when the guy came to seat us, he just walked past muttering 'follow me'. We then waited another age for someone to take the order which took AN HOUR to arrive!!!!!!!
We ordered wine at the table and then when it came to ordering food, we were told someone would be with us 'in a moment' to take the order and then that there was no table service only to have someone else come past a moment later and ask to take our order!
when it came to ordering more drinks we were told there was no table service again, despite the menu stating that there was after 6pm.
When it came to paying, we were told that we had to do so at the bar. When we spoke to the barman about shoddy service, long waits etc he just shrugged his shoulders!
Absolutely AWFUL service, mediocre food - DON'T GO!!!

I feel I have to comment to agree with the below statement! I have REGULARLY gone to this pub since Oct 03 when I moved to this area and it was WITHOUT DOUBT the best pub in Amersham, probably Bucks. Since about April this year, the last 10-12 times I have been, whether to drink or eat or both, I have been very disappointed with the food, drink AND service. It pains me to write this as I used to LOVE this place but I would no longer recommend it and stopped going. I understand management has changed recently so maybe this is the problem. There used to be a FANTASTIC ale range as well as original and varied specials. I had a work party there over Christmas just gone and the entire team made our party welcome and happy. The young male manager (who could've been no older than 25) came over and talked to us for a lengthy period of time and there was a real feeling of locality and respect for the guests. Bring back old management and I will bring back my custom!

My wife and I used to come here a lot: the food, though not brilliant, was generally goodish, and there was an ever-changing variety of beers- some not widely available in the south-east (e.g. Jennings). Then the food started going downhill, one couldn't order drinks from the bar, and finally, the last time we went, we were told that we would have to wait until the waitress found us a table (it wasn't full, or even nearly full). We turned tail and haven't been back since. A pity, because Amersham isn't exactly packed with good pubs (except yoof pubs, perhaps).

The pub, beer and atmosphere are resonable enough, but the food has recently gone downhill. You pay high prices for what looks and tastes like frozen meals. After 3 poor meals there, we are refusing to eat there until they sort it out.

Not the greatest of pubs, but effectively the only one in Amersham on the Hill so it doesn't have to try hard. Feels like a typical chain pub (sorry 'outlet')with little character of its own, but the choice of ale was better than expected. Didn't try the food, so can't comment.
A port in a storm, but no better than that.

I went there for lunch today and it will be the last time I eat there EVER. The lunch menu was dull and unappealing. I opted not to stay safe with a jacket potato and instead chose the chicken Caesar salad "with red pepper, anchovies and shavings of Parmesan" Not a bit like it sounded on the menu it turned out to be grey, chewy, tasteless chicken thigh meat served atop some soggy mixed leaves with thick rectangles of a tasteless cheese resembling a very cheap cheddar perched on the top. It was awful and certainly not worth the 7.99 I paid for it on order.

Do you know how much chicken thighs cost even at retail prices? About 2 for 8 thighs. The meal was a disgrace!

Much better since it became a chef and brewer. Nice food and relaxed atmosphere.

Visited yesterday with my Sister In Law and although the people were nice I'm very sorry i went there. We arrived at 2.45, following on the sunday lunchtime rush. The refurb looks nice but the service was appalling. We waited 25 minutes for our main course and after chasing it up it arrived. Plate was roasting hot but the meal was stone cold! We were the third group of people complaining about the same thing within the space of about 20 minutes. Felt embarrassed for the waiter as he got the brunt of it and told us it was all to do with new systems - THESE NEW SYSTEMS DO NOT WORK!! Sorry but i wouldn't run the risk of going hungry again......

Went there last night with my husband. The Valentine's menu had some good options but we wanted something off their main menu. They were very accomodating. The food was absolutely spot-on. Very good quality ingredients. Staff very friendly. Huge seating area. Nice tradidtional decor. Will visit again.

Now the only place in Amersham on the Hill to get a pint but more of a restaurant than a pub. Having said that the food's good, with a large, reasonably priced menu and average to fair beer. Tables are reserved for people eating, so if you're after a night out then you're better off heading down into Amersham Old Town. 7/10

Has the usual pub chain kind of atmosphere but the staff were very friendly and the fish and chips were'nt bad either. One of the better pubs in Amersham!
marky_watson - 25 Feb 2006 15:34
A bit fake, especially the silly hipped roof on the new olde worlde extension, but the food is not bad.

Now completely refurbished this pub offers a fine atmosphere, very good food and an excellent range of beers, wines and spirits. Welcoming throughout the day.

Completely refurbished in December 2003 - managing to maintain cosy intimate atmosphere. Now very popular for high quality food and good service.
