user reviews of the Three Greyhounds, Soho

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Finally got around to buying a drink in this pub after finding it closed a couple of years back. Credit to the landlady, she did apologise when I sent her an email about the incorrect published opening times on my previous aborted visit. She even offered to shout me a pint, on my return. I wasn't sure she'd recall that though. So I paid the usual amount. The Three Greyhounds is yet another Nicholsons pub in the West End. It's a fairly small place with a singe ground floor bar and downstairs toilets. A good place for people watching and it's quite an airy space in the summer. Ales were Sharps Doom Bar, Leeds Midnight Bell, Fullers London Pride & Nicholsons Pale Ale. Ciders were Thatchers Heritage and Westons Old Rosie. Seems to attract its fair share of drunks and is therefore typical of the pubs in this area. But probably also one of the best in the area.

Last straight pub before you hit the old compton. Really not much on tap, but what they do have is well kept. We often pop in here for a couple as it is a great pub for some people watching. Road is little used by cars so getting a seat outside in Summer can mean we are here for several rounds. Be prepared to deal with the beggars, flower sellers and cycle ricsshaws, we actually enjoy their visits now, pretending to be Border Patrol or 5 o and see them run away.

Last pub of my 3 in Soho in one afternoon.

Another Nicholson's pub with 6 ales on tap, a couple being the same as on offer in the Dog & Duck

Nice apricot style glass drop lights hanging.

Wooden floor throughout with rather a attractive brass foot stand at the bar with Griffins on stands.
lezford - 9 Aug 2013 16:44
Disappointed to find this pub closed yesterday morning, despite its website claiming it opened at 10am. The 2013 Good Beer Guide also displays incorrect information. 0/10 for a pub that does not serve beer at advertised opening times.
blue_scrumpy - 22 Oct 2012 21:09
Revisited yesterday as part of a crawl through Soho - decent (albeit small) Nicholson's corner pub, mock Tudor exterior but little of merit inside. Decent welcome and a good range of six ales - I had the Hook Norton's Hooky Bitter which was a very nice and well-kept ale.
BobOs - 23 Mar 2012 14:53
I had a couple of beers in this pub (May 2011), enjoyed the atmoshere so much, I named my Aussie Greyhound SOHO MAX.
aussielondon - 9 Jul 2011 10:30
Love this cosy little Nicholson's pub in the heart of Soho.

Great spot to sit and people watch out of the window. Don't look too closely at the men though, or you could end up with more than you bargained for.

As with Nicholson's excellent Black Friar, The Three Greyhounds has Addlestones Cider for the very respectable price of 3.30.
Pat_Bateman - 8 Feb 2011 16:32
Small streetcorner Nicholson's with a slightly more "local" vibe than most pubs in this area.

Ales on handpump were: Thornbridge Wild Holly (which was delicious at 3.35), Pride, Doombar, Reverend James and Old Rosie cider. One notable keg was Black Stella, which I had never seen before.

There is the usual Nicholson's menu and the food did look good.
flashharry1965 - 10 Jan 2011 10:56
Lovely little proper pub - but emphasis on the little! Yes alright I did go on a sat night so its gonna be packed and yes it was raining harder than it has done for ages outside - so these factors add to the percieved smallness of the place. But i have been on quieter times and its a good pub with good bitters.
iannfa - 4 Oct 2010 22:42
I dropped in on a Saturday lunchtime and had two pints - Landlord and Doom Bar - both perfectly OK. The pub was fine and a cool (in the purely climatic sense) refuge from a rather sticky Old Compton Street. Spick and span, not too crowded and with comfortable seating. Their summer schedule promised a good range of beers on the pump and the menu looked pretty good, though rather heavy on pies.

But why, oh why can't somebody run a course for foreign bar staff in Soho that might stress how the traditional English pub is meant to be a warm and welcoming place? At her frequent best the Polish (or whatever) barmaid is a joy - educated, willing, cheerful and a crowd-puller - but too often the smile gets left behind as here. If you think the work is beneath you then don't do it.
guayabera - 17 Jul 2010 18:55
Only tried the Daleside Blonde and it was a good pint. But only stayed for one before making my way down to The Cambridge as I prefer the Cambridge to this one as it's usually got a better beer selection.
But no problem , every one to their own wrt the previous reviewers preference..
Gann - 26 Jun 2010 14:06
Just as an addition, was there last night and had three poor pints in a row, all tasted somewhat flat and dead (Doombar, Landlord and a gingery one from Daleside). First time I've had poor pints here.
race_faster - 25 Jun 2010 12:30
Have been here numerous times over the past couple of years and have always had a good pint. Jaipur was on offer during the latest visit (three other Nicholson's pubs in the vicinity had it on though, leading to a good, if slightly repetitive beer range). Staff can get a bit surly during busy times, but overall a nice basic snug pub that I've always found dependable. Better than the Cambridge round the corner.
race_faster - 7 Jun 2010 15:21
Better beer in here than The Cambridge we were in earlier and the bar staff were friendlier. Nethergate Azzaparrot was tasty, the TT was excellent but the Black Beauty - I think thats what it was called, had no condition and lacked any flavour whatsoever.
Bernie5 - 21 Feb 2010 13:07
Smallish street corner Nicholsons pub in the heart of Soho, much smaller inside than you might expect from outside.

A striking Mock tudor exterior gives way to a rather disappointing and nondescript interior with little of note. The limited amount of seating - mainly banquettes round the walls - means that it doesn't have to get very busy at all for it to be standing room only. The windows are leaded, but plain glass and the floor is bare - boarded.

The standard Nicholsons framed potted history of the pub tells us that the premises were first licensed in 1847. The pub name derives from the dogs that used to hunt here when Soho was open ground.

On my recent Saturday lunchtime visit, beers on were Landlord, Pride, Broadside, Polar Beer from Springhead Brewery and a beer from Ryedale. The Polar Beer - 2.95p - had a distinct lemony feel and was reasonably pleasant.

This is a rather unremarkable and uninspiring pub - despite external appearances - and I don't see any particular reason to revisit
JohnBonser - 26 Jan 2010 15:46
Popped in quickly for a Hobgoblin which was in top nick. Despite the pub being crammed to the gunwales was served very quickly and was able to do some vertical drinking outside. Deservedly popular by my quick visit but will go at a quieter time next time.
Oakman100 - 4 Nov 2009 18:43
Visited here yesterday (Afternoon) as part of the Nicholson "Dick Whittington" Ale Trail. Fairly Quiet but served a good pint of London Pride. Bar Staff were friendly Typical Nicolson Fare. Also available were Morrisy Fox, TT Landlord Black Sheep and Old Rosie Cider. Worth a visit if in SOHO Area.
Bitter_Man - 1 Oct 2009 10:50
A great pub with a charisma. I have been going to this pub since 1975. Evry time I come to England I pay a visit. Friendly staff and great beer. Lovely to follow the life outside.

VERY RUDE bartender. The place was (of course) loud at 6pm, the bartender couldn't hear our order and got impatient. After we repeated our order twice, she told my friend that her English was bad (I guess since my friend is not white). Everyone around the bar was shocked at her comments -- several even came up to apologize for her behavior as not representative British. Would never go back and would tell everyone NOT to.
nightflyer - 19 Dec 2008 00:22
A great little pub with well kept beer & guinness, and a great selection of lagers, (bottled and draught).

Nice food, clean pub, and fun and freindly staff.

Does get busy but well worth the visit...it's become my West End regular.
Aleandstout - 29 Nov 2008 17:05
Good range of beers and wines but didn't appreciate being screeched at by the bar maid who seemed to find it a chore to serve people.

Went by a couple of days ago and thought I'd try again and even though it was busy, the service was quick and friendly, would go again if in the area.
beerwhenever - 19 Nov 2008 15:26
I've always enjoyed this great little pub. The ale choice is farly uninspiring, but is always good quality. And despite other comments i have always found the staff pretty good. For a West End pub its a good find, especially in summer.
wellinformed - 20 Apr 2008 18:43
Good Soho boozer in a great location. Good beers, and very reasonably priced wine (especially considering the location). Small interior, but tables on the street for summer al-fresco drinking and Soho people watching. Staff can be a bit surly, but that's not unusual in this part of town.
strummerville - 30 Jan 2008 21:31
Went on sunday evening , got seats ok , she had wine , I had lager , both ok , no real complants
5 min walk from home so we will prob use it again
kiwiphil - 31 Dec 2007 14:03
It's ok for the odd pint or two - nothing special. Wouldn't fancy eating here as is seems pretty dirty and unloved - still, some reviewers here rate the food, so maybe its ok.

The service is friendly enough - and it's never too busy
Minesapint63 - 18 Dec 2007 16:25
Im not sure what happened to my previous comments on this pub, but they went something along the lines of:

A great little pub that serves a wide selection of beers and is well worth a visit.

I also think that the bar staff should cheer up and not think of it as a major favour that they are doing for you when they serve a drink Its their job!
Strongers - 28 Nov 2007 07:20
This is a lovely little pub in the heart of Soho. It has a decent selection of ales and it never seems to be too busy.

I think the "psycho barman" (see below) is Spanish, not Italian. He has the word "Peace" tattooed on his neck in Japanese/Chinese, underneath his left ear. He seems friendly enough!

All in all this is one of my favourite Soho pubs.
gatomalo - 18 Nov 2007 19:17
Discovered this place on my recent London trip and it is quite fantastic. Great beer selection with wide range of real ales and (real)ciders.
Great food...you gotta try one of the pies...
All in all a little jewel in the heart of Soho.
MikeClarke - 30 Oct 2007 15:29
Can either be incredibly busy or incredibly quiet. There's heater, canopies and tables outside, but you won't get a seat unless you get there before 4pm! Lovely little pub though. Still a favourite. Only problem I have is the weird little Italian(?) psycho barman who always looks as though he's on the verge of punching someone. Still, better than most in the area.
anonymous - 21 Sep 2007 17:54
This is a strange pub for central london and in particular Soho - a very small pub where the emphasis (despite a limited menu) is definetly on booze rather than food. I consider it among my favourites in central london for the simple reason it is a great place to pop into for a reasonably placed pint with an OK atmosphere and completely free of pretensions. I would not eat there (why on earth would you eat standard micrwaved pub grub in the middle of Soho) and the toilets are always filthy but if you fancy a pub to wander into with a mate, have a chat and a few pints then I highly recomend it.
Sorrowful - 18 Jun 2007 14:08
Very reasonable selection of good beers and prices in the centre of Soho. Adnams, Landlord and 3 other beers plus standard range of lagers. Excellent on a sunny day when you can sit in the chairs outside. The staff were very friendly indeed.
seasiderMM - 21 Apr 2007 11:43
The night I went (thursday Feb 22) the beers were in pretty poor condition. Landlord and Adnams both.
jackvervacke - 26 Feb 2007 18:47
I'm going to use a phrase I've seen elsewhere on this site - reverse Tardis

This place looks reasonably large from the outside but is quite small. It only needs about 20 people to seem crowded. I like it though - it's nice, friendly, unpretentious without any of the camp media types further along old Compton St.

One of the better pubs in this part of Soho
murgatroyd - 11 Feb 2007 22:16
Just a good old place. Great beers, friendly staff, good enough chow. Busy but could get a seat. Mixed crowd. Nothing especially striking but just simply nothing wrong as well. Well worth a look.
pieandpint - 8 Feb 2007 15:58
Very nice, traditionally decorated pub slap bang in the middle of Soho. Good vibrant atmosphere and not too difficult to get a drink.
Zod - 15 Jan 2007 11:07
7.95 for a bottle of house red in the middle of soho: can't complain. Sparkling loo seats in the ladies'. I will go again.
ladyjay - 8 Jan 2007 01:35
Poor pub, its really small and i hated the people in there. It consisted of weird people dressed all in black and smoking their faces off. Poor
danspack - 27 Sep 2006 17:56
Nice central London pub, with an intresting selection of ales for the area. Recommended.
anonymous - 27 May 2006 18:26
Had an early Sunday lunch here recently. Lovely Aberdeen Angus burger, good chips and a very spicey Bloody Mary with whole green chillies which I strongly recommend.

I don't think I could handle this tiny place on a Friday night but it's lovely on a balmy Sunday.

5t3IIa - 17 May 2006 13:22
Small corner pub with three real ales on tap, traditional decor (though apparently a fake, according to earlier reviews). Doormen to stop the place getting too full, and as a result - and unlike the Coach and Horses nearby - it wasn't. Not enough places to sit though.
beeronaut - 28 Jan 2006 21:44
The first thing that hits you about this recently renovated mock Tudor pub is that it looks 3 times larger from the outside than it is when you walk in a sort of reverse Tardis effect. The interior is dimly lit with dark floors and walls. The compactness of the pub makes it quite intimate but they try to use every available bit of space (note the small shelf around the pillar in the middle of the pub). The customer base is largely office workers and the pub comes over as a bit more civilized than most of the others in the area. Part of the Nicholsons chain that seem to be revamping their products as well as their pubs. The Greyhound has an extensive range of changing guest beers (they keep a tally of how many pass through). One novel touch is that all the bitters are all served in old style dimpled tankards. They also do a reasonably priced wine selection and a decent food menu. Given the amount of times I drink in the area I am surprised that I have not been here before but it certainly wont be long before I return
RogerB - 27 Jan 2006 16:15
A whole evening or a quick pint? Well to add my 2 pence worth. I would think that the 3Gs is a pub to meet a mate before going onto somewhere else. But, each time we have tried this we have ended up staying for more pints than we intended. So, this must be a decent boozer! The beer is good, as is the service. Can tend to get a little noisy on a Friday evening.
grayguy - 12 Jan 2006 11:26
I don't know about the last comment, we managed to spend an entire evening there and got suitably pissed. Compared to the other pubs nearby this is a pretty good bet for a decent pint and some olives.
sifr - 21 Dec 2005 11:42
Single room corner site mock Tudor pub. Five cask ales including a chance of a scoop. Laid back, relaxed, bare floorboards place lacking in genuine charm or character but inoffensive in a Wetherspoons sort of way. A pub to pop in for a quick one rather than spend the evening.
SilkTork - 7 Oct 2005 00:35
At the risk of sounding like an old man, I preferred this pub back in the old days. The 3Gs was one of the few places left in Soho where most of the original wooden furniture was still in use (complete with one inscription dating back 400 years!), and the whole place had a homely worn-in character. I worked there briefly when Chris was manager, and spent many an afternoon chatting to the quirky regulars. It was truly a place where people from every walk of life were happy to chat and mingle, from gay to straight and from local nobility to local drug dealers. Such a pleasant care-free (almost conspiratorial!) atmosphere.

Then I came back from living overseas to discover that the place had been gutted and that it'd be turned into a ghastly generic pub-chain venue. I was devastated! Whilst I've been in a few times since, it's really not the same. The bar staff are very pleasant, and they CAN pour a pint, but frankly the venue itself has lost its charm. I'll still include it in my "route" when I have foreign friends over, because of the long and fascinating history of the building and because it's still a pretty decent bar, but I go elsewhere if I want to visit a proper pub these days. Mind you, even the Coach and Horses is losing its legendary landlord now, so the choices are getting smaller....
steve5312 - 25 Jul 2005 14:56
A fine place to get a few drinks in before going someplace like Ronnie Scott's. There are a number of well-kept ales available at a reasonable price. As one of my friends posted here, the mugs and glasses are also impressive.
kyle473 - 16 Apr 2005 21:21
Hooray!!! A great pub with great Ale. Now no longer using the Dog And Duck due to poor service and ale quality. It is refreshing to come to a bar with friendly barmaids and a great pint of Ale.
jsonhughes - 16 Mar 2005 14:48
Ended up in here after a lengthy pub crawl around soho. From what I remember it was very dark and cramped and the toilets were filthy. Can't comment on the beer as it all tasted the same by that point.
lennie384 - 28 Feb 2005 12:17
As mentioned before by others its hit and miss. Sometimes welcoming with ales in good condition and the typical decent pub food. Other times I've had some of the worst ale and service in the west end.
Zaphod - 24 Feb 2005 17:24
I like the arguments below! My opinion of the place is nothing but good. On both occasions i have visited recently, the beer has been excellent and varied. Prices are not bad at all for the area and the place has a nice (if somewhat artificial?) atmosphere. Good beer, good service - and they serv real ale in pint mugs - can't go wrong!

Nick, mate. You're the one that needs a life. The purpose of this site is to separate the wheat from the chaffe. To share pub experiences, good and bad. If getting a full pint and warm food without having to go through a Monty Python sketch in order to communicate with the staff is your idea of "silver spoon service", I'd hate to see where you regularly eat and drink. I'm no snob but I do expect a basic level of service and quality when I'm forking out 30 - 40 on lunch and drinks. That didn't happen. I call them as I see them. I lunch at various Nicholson's pubs 2 or 3 times a week. This is the only one that has ever let me down. Looking at other recent comments I'm not the only one that has had a bad experience there.
Andrew - 9 Nov 2004 16:03
Andrew get a life mate.Ive known Karen for some years and know she is a professional, her staff are well chosen and she is polite and genuine. If you choose to drink in the West End of London then you take the rough with the smooth,it is a busy pub, full of character and a pleasant place for a beer or twelve.I suggest that if you want silver spoon service go and have your dinner in the ritz.
Nick Hamer. - 8 Nov 2004 17:10
The selection of ales looked superb when i entered but unfortunately the one i wanted was off and my second choice ran out after my first pint. However, contrary to some of the other reviews, i found the staff to be happy and polite and the measures to be reasonable. It's just a shame it isn't a little bigger as i don't tend to frequent pubs where i'm going to have to stand all night.
Si Barber - 8 Nov 2004 17:08
Shocker of a pub. I am a regular drinker in Soho but now introduce this place as the worst pub in Soho.

Staff could barely communicate, and were pretty surly. Drinks were even worse, glasses dirty, beer badly kept. A good indication of this is that none of our party finished our drinks. The taste of the lager was completely filthy and looked misty.
Katherine - 8 Nov 2004 16:02
Karen, I do apologise for not making it clear that I did receive a full refund on the meal. Thank you. I do however stand by my other comments that the meals were served cold and the service was poor. The person ahead of me had to ask twice to have his pints topped up as did I. They were short by a good inch and a half, and no we aren't talking about the foam settling either. As I did say, previous visits were quite good. Which is why we chose to stop there for a meal. Lets put it down to an off day for all concerned. As for Wetherspoons, I'd rather drink Special Brew in a public loo.
Andrew - 2 Nov 2004 17:20
I would like to remind Andrew 19 Aug, that he did actually get a full refund on his meal from the manager,(when I arrived) he forgot to mention that bit, the paper floating in his meal was a day dot that we use to ensure that all food is kept within the basic health and hygiene requierments. Would also like to point out that the girl who couldnt speak a word of english was quiet capable of reading your comments, as was many of the regulars who frequent the pub Mon-Fri and all where extreamly offended by your remark about her. I would suggest that andrew 19 aug uses a wheatherspoons next time he graces the West end with his personality. P.S managers are allowed luch breaks
Karen manager of the best pub in the west end DARLING - 2 Nov 2004 00:41
'A home from home' This little gem situated on the corner of Greek St and Compton St, offers thirsty tourists the friendly and warm atmosphere associated with the traditional English country 'local'. The level of service was beyond that of many of its neighbors and infact could rival the service that is common back home in America. I would like to thank Mrs Richards the landlady for giving my wife and I several wonderful evenings during our two week stay in London. Top rate service in a top rate location!
Tommy Green (Gulf Shores Alabama) - 29 Oct 2004 13:05
Excellent Pub, The food was great, the landlady and Barstaff were very friendly. The prices weren't to high, infact very reasonable. Highly recommended to people who stay in the west end!!
Mel + Leigh - 31 Aug 2004 14:21
Can be a real hit and miss place. Previous visits were quite good. Stopped for supper and a pint last sunday (Aug 15). Poor staff that couldn't speak a word of English or pull a full pint if her life depended on it. Food was cold, and one plate had some sort of paper label swimming in the gravy. Having said that the manager (when she arrived) did what she could to make amends. All in all you takes your chances.
Andrew - 19 Aug 2004 16:04
Great pub in central London which is a rarity.Run by a brilliant lady by the name of Karen.Highly recommended !!
Ferg White - 14 May 2004 23:35
Walking through our capital looking for a good place to stop for a drink. This place shone out like a star in the night. There was a good range of ale available, and the landlady and staff where very knowledgable about the extremley well kept ales. Shall most certainly be back for more.
melvyn and jack, Grimsby - 5 May 2004 12:38
very good pub the landlady was very helpfull and friendly
we were only there for the weekend and we went in twice
derek&norma sheffield - 15 Apr 2004 14:52
I like this pub,it doesnt try to be anything other than what it is,a traditional west end boozer, good beer on tap.The place is tiny so gets filled up very quickly, however its in a great location for people watching,on a busy soho corner.Paul and Karen the couple that run the plce are lovely guys and would always make you feel welcome.
Nick Hamer - 10 Apr 2004 16:52
Excellent Beer.Good food and pleasant staff well worth a visit.
stewart - 16 Mar 2004 09:23
My favorite pub in London. I prefer countyr pubs to city pubs and the Three Greyhounds is a pleasant spot amid all of the loud music and flashing lights found in many London pubs. They pour a good pint and I've had many a memorable conversation there before or after a show. What more can you ask for?!
Steve - [email protected] - 2 Feb 2004 15:20
I have never been treated with such contempt before. A quiet drink and pleasant chat with friends turned into mayhem. While waiting for our friend to finish his drink (about 5 mins after the rest of the group) the proprietor and another staff member screamed at us relentlessly, threw us out of the pub and launched at my friend as if he were going to punch him. A lovely evening had been completely ruined by behaviour which was highly inappropriate and most uncalled for.
anonymous - 13 Jan 2004 14:47
Nice pub, good pints, will be back.
Bruce - 17 Nov 2003 19:35
This used too be a good pub. Not over-modernised. No loud music or music at all. And definitely no fruit machine. It had regulars who liked it that way. In these not too distant days a fruit machine was once installed and someone put a black cloth over it to indicate their displeasure. Anyway thats all changed now (since about 2001). The insides were ripped out, its character was lost and a fruit machine was installed. I no longer go here. I go to the only decent pub left in Soho - The Coach and Horses.
James Wild - 13 Mar 2003 18:37
Another Soho low ceiling down the stairs theme pub :-)
Mike - 23 Aug 2002 10:30
The first thing I have to say about this compact pub is that the bar staff are always really friendly. The price of a pint does not make a hole in your pocket, and you could sit there people-watching all day if you feel the need.
