Now called the Market Tavern. The Drinks are still cheap and the pub has benefitted from a refurbishment. Staff and clientele are friendly, music, sport and pool table set the ambience. A pub in London where your wallet is not fleeced after a round does not deserve criticism

Cheapest pub in Croydon and has been for over a decade now. Possible to get a Greene King IPA for less than £2.00. Has Pool table, big screen showing SkySports and BT. Cheap food, wide range of drinks.
Does attract some oddballs/chavvy scum but you expect that of any cheap pub. Not as bad as it's reputation.

I'd walked past this place countless times but always given it a wide berth. the way that they always seem to have a bouncer on the door no matter what the time or day made me worry that it might be a really rough/dangerous place.

But then ended up in there by chance recently and was very pleasantly surprised. Not a whiff of menace at all in there, a perfectly decent place, with the patrons being a really mixed crowd, right across the ages & gender spectrum.

The drink in there is seriously cheap & seems to be of a perfectly acceptable quality.

Only slight gripe was music a bit too loud but then I suppose this was a Friday night...

If you've hit upon hard times the goose may be for you. Very reasonably priced if not limited selection of draft lager's. If your into real-ale forget it, go to the George instead.

it is the cheapest pub in Croydon which is saying something and this tells you all you need to know.

Hard to argue with £2 pints of Strongbow and Fosters among other drinks (Mon-Thursday) and it's better than drinking on the street.

Staff are friendly and do a great job in the circumstances.

changed hands recently to the pub group that owns yates the place is still a s*** hole but has lost a lot of custom. The bar staff are slow, unfreindly dressed like tramps and the whote attitude needs addressing which must reflect on the bad managment. I could not help but notice a couple of meals that were being served and they looked absolutely disgusting and the customers were not impressed and made a quick exit. Could go on and on about the state of this place but let sleeping dogs lie

Been here a couple of times (usually half pissed at the time) and never experienced any problems. A worthy competitor to the JD Wetherspoon pubs close by.

Difficult to be complimentary about this pub other than 4 better pubs nearby!
Stonecoat - 6 Sep 2011 12:35
nice enough pub if not a little bit rough looking

anyone who thinks service is bad was either unlucky or belongs in one foot in the grave. The blonde manager has now moved on never had anything but perfect service and courtesy from her this is cheap and cheerful it is a pub trying to out wetherspoons, wetherspoons. With their superior prices, service, and food this shouldn't be hard. Though showing signs it might be carlsberg now 5pp than the george. I've been visiting the area for 4 years and try and get in here on every visit.

Cheapest pub in Croydon - which is some feat in a town with four JDW outlets. One of the few pubs I know in which you can't trust them to serve decent tasking lager let alone proper beer. Their recent pints of Foster's @1.49 were not worth it...

If you find yourself in here drink spirits (doubles typically from 2 inc mixer) and the food is cheap and plentiful.

Wasn't impressed by the service today as my food didn't arrive and I had to chase up the order. This is a pub for kids, If you're over 22 I suggest you try the Green Dragon next door.

What a dump, but this pub is cheap,
mdoc62 - 10 Mar 2010 15:12
cheap, cheerful, does what it says on the tin.

good drinks at a cheap price, hence why its so popular

good work all

I use this pub alll the time, got friendly staff and its cheap
lucycr0 - 15 Aug 2009 10:35
I normally don't trust any pub with Goose in the title especially one as tatty as this. However I ventured in, in the name of research and my fears were confirmed, it's an awful, depressing place. Two plus points, 2.49 for a large JD & Coke and no stairs to get to the Gents.

I have lived about 10 minutes from this pub for 3 years and visited all the pubs nearby. This pub is one of the worst in Croydon despite the low prices. It has a serious problem with dosser-like people begging and interfering with customers/shoppers who wish to have a quite drink/meal. These vagrants are by all accounts the people who have been barred from other local establishments i.e. Ship of Fools and The George.

Some of the staff are rude impersonating a Basil Fawty type customer service plan and I am merely referring to the time between 11am and 5pm.

If Croydon Council BID are serious regarding cleaning up Croydon Town Centre, there first port of call should be this place. Perhaps, if they did next years license might not be granted in the "decent" public interest.
oldcroydon - 18 Apr 2009 14:24
The cheapest pint in Croydon. The problem is it is just another "beer barn" of which there are too many in Central Croydon.7/10.Any pub trying to keep DOWN prices is good, not far away the beer can be as much as 3.05 !!!!!!Any pub charging 3-00 + deserves to go out of business !
slerpy - 6 Mar 2009 21:36
The blonde manager is ever so rude in here, and besides it taking me 15 minuted to get just a coke the service was shocking!
sam1103 - 4 Mar 2009 17:17
With the Green Dragon on one side, the Dog and Bull on the other and the Ship over the road, you'd be forgiven for over looking this place every time. But it does have one saving grace, inasmuch as the beer is significantly cheaper than pretty much anywhere else in town. The two ales on today were Green King IPA - 1,69 and Spitfire - 1,95 and really, that is the point of this place.
Of course, you have to suffer all of the downsides of a boozer with cheap drinks, but lunchtimes are probably the best time to take advantage of the prices, which extend to the menu as well.

Pubsignman - 22 Jan 2009 22:25
this pub is S..t Don't bother
stellafellor - 21 Oct 2008 16:58
The breakfast on offer here is 1.95 and includes , one of everything a breakfast should have. Much cheaper than the local 'spoons who charge 2.59.The Dragon opposite does a BIG breakfast, it is TWO of everything and only for the mightily hungry.usually the breakfast here suits most people considering the price.
slerpy - 15 Aug 2008 20:54
I ventured in recently in fear and trepidation. I prefer the Dog and Bull in Summer for the nice garden.A pleasant surprise, dirt cheap beer in a drinkable state a tentative 7/10. I will check this again soon with the wife who will doubtlessly inspect the ladies toilets !
slerpy - 1 Aug 2008 13:15
Horrible place. Lack of seating, full of weirdos. Cheap, yes, but I prefer The George or Skylark. Avoid like plague unless you are a regular.
beef4dinner - 4 Oct 2007 11:07
I visited this pub a few months ag. A fight broke out. I shall not be going there again.
anonymous - 3 Jun 2007 09:31
Just plain wierd. Bouncers mingling with the crowd, and searching strange looking people who seem to expect it anyway. Everyone shouting at each other, because everyone at the next table is doing the same. All the stuffing ripped out of the seats, must have been extremely fidgety drinkers. A bit like a scene in From Dusk Til Dawn - and all this entertainment in the middle of the afternoon! Cheap beer though.
CountryBoy - 5 May 2007 18:34
A place to drink if you're skint or alcoholic or one of Croydon's dispossessed. Comparisons to Wetherspoon's runs into the hundreds, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it knows its market and they provide sustenance for the shareholders, one assumes. Mrs Codrotten hates it. I like it when in a Bukowski state of mind, but only for a pint or two. Never know who you might meet.
Codrotten - 14 Nov 2006 17:11
A reasonable "Wetherspoon" type clone, with similar cheap prices and a reasonable selection of beers including Youngs sold cheaper than the nearby D&B!

This is an "all-day drinkers" pub, which attracts a young crowd in the evening, eager to make their pocket money stretch. So, great for a cheap midday drink and bite to eat, but unless you are attracted to the idea of watching teenagers trying to impress each other by making animal noises after having over-indulged on whatever this week's alco-pop is, avoid in the evening, and try a grown-ups pub..
zjp - 25 Sep 2006 23:25
Not a bad pub, but could be better the place is full of the drop outs of Croydon, and yes full of kids.

The staff wear whatever they want.

Pub used to be better, but still not too bad.

Cheap prices, and good food
Dude69 - 14 Jul 2006 12:02
Cheap and cheerful pub. Younger crowd in here. Doubles here are mega cheap, great place to drink if you strapped for cash and in the town centre.
bubbles83 - 30 Mar 2006 22:26
Not too bad a place. cheap food and a good place to start the night. Fridays / saturday nights are usually heaving!

Neonpink - 18 Mar 2006 07:24
Not the nicest place in the world but seriously cheap. Good therefore if you are skint and fancy getting hammered.
anonymous - 4 Jan 2006 15:16
Looks like a high street bank from the outside, and doesn't get much better inside. Go to the Hogshead opposite.
steve5312 - 30 Oct 2005 15:18
Just another chain pub.

It's not gonna be great is it, cheap beer badly served no doubt!
si_1967 - 16 Aug 2005 12:09
Athmosphere??? Where??? Yet another bland pub trying to cash in on Wetherspoons success
Jeff "Sandy" - 22 Oct 2004 00:52
Decent prices, eclectic mix of people and no Gary's! what else can you ask for!a good place to meet up with friends!
anonymous - 24 Jun 2004 21:16
nice place, decent prices, cosy atmosphere, but would it kill them to clean the tables once in a while? can get a bit stuffy in the summer
anonymous - 15 Jun 2004 16:53
Its a great pup with cheap drinks and cheap food it has the biggest mixture of people that i have ever seen from sk8ters to goths to drunk old afternoon drinkers to your bubery cap wearing gangster wannabes. Th non smoking sections are vast (yes i did say section's it has two) are vast and comfertable unlike the small table you get in most places! my only complaint is WOULD IT KILL EM TO PLAY SOME DECENT MUSIC!!!!! I HATE POP!!! some rock or metal would be nice thats all bye!!!!
