please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub re-opened a year or so ago. It is a good down to earth pub. The bar is central and the lounge wraps around it. The seating and decor is serviceable and OK. They had 3 real ales on the bar but the one I chose ran out. It was a good thing because the bit I tasted was particularly sour. I therefore had Sharps Doombar. I ordered a cheese and tomato sandwich was particularly good value. It had a huge slab of bread with about 1/2 pound of cheese in it plus fries and side salad and only £4.50.

This is the worst pub I have ever been to, on a friday night they had a dj which was alright but when last orders was called we had about 2 mins to drink up and got told the words 'get out' I was shock so rude and the drinkers that's night said they worked behind the bar if so it was not a good impressionm after getting thrown out basically then had to wait half an hour for a taxi to discovered noone else went they were having a lock in! Absolutely discusting customer service after spending a lot of money there last night ! Never ever again! Do not go here!

First time I've visited this place since it became a pretentious wine-bar/closed-down/re-opened/got new management etc.
Doombar, Youngs and one other on pump, the Youngs ordinary was fine. They had a carvery open (it was a Sunday) but agreed to do sarnies / ploughmans for us. The food was excellent, plenty of it and cheap too. This has now turned into a nice pub, hope it lasts this time.

WE ARE NOW OPEN AGAIN AND THE PLACE IS LOOKING SPOT ON. COME IN AND TRY OUR FINE WINES AND GREAT FOOD. OR BOOK AN EVENT IN OUR NEWLY REFURBISHED BARN. B&B COMING SOON!

There are a number of things to be said about the eating and drinking experience in this pub that lead me to give a negative review.

I chose this pub after reading the earlier reviews. I booked it a week in advance, intending to eat here after a brisk walk from Epsom racecourse via Headley.
The pub is small but tidy and the decoration modern. A log fire was burning in the grate which gave a welcoming feel. Unfortunately positive first impressions gave way to doubts after we were served cloudy pints of Youngs, splashed into the glasses, creating big heads and short measures. I asked the barmaid to top them up which she did willingly but in truth I should have handed them back and asked for something else. The beer tasted Ok but looked like the end of the barrel which it was, as later we were told there was no more Youngs to be had. Self respecting beer keepers would have switched off or switched over barrels and not served the last dregs.

However, worse was to follow as were kept waiting for 1 hour and 15 minutes for our meal. After about 30 minutes we were wondering what was going on when the waitress who was also the barmaid announced there was a delay in the kitchen and that we were to be offered drinks on the house. We accepted the offer when we should have walked out. However we were with friends whom we hadn't see for a while, were deep in conversation and not easily inclined to upsticks and find somewhere else. But man it dragged on and on. Then there was a flurry of activity as waitresses emerged with meals and several other tables received their food. It became clear that everybody was waiting and we were at the end of a queue of 20 others dotted at tables around the room.
When we were offered the free drinks it was an apology and an inducement to stay but the waitress said it would be another 5 to 10 minutes and it wasn't. It was more like 45 minutes.

We stayed; we ate and the food was good enough but hardly worth the cost, coming as it did from a kitchen where the chef was under pressure and tension must have pervaded the ovens.

The waitress remained calm and was as accommodating as she could be. But she should have been honest at the outset and told us how long it would be so we could have made an informed decision to stay or go. The story was one of the chefs had not turned up for work and the kitchen was understaffed. It seemed more than that. Whatever, the staff would have known how much of a delay that would cause and should have relayed this to all their customers.

I would not use this pub again, given the cloudy beer and huge delay in being served, not withstanding the offer of a free drink. The staff need to be more transparent than that in their customer relations.

On this day this pub gets 3 out of 10.

My family and I had sunday meal at this pub 2 weeks ago and we were amazed by the changes inside! The restaurant looks lovely and service was superb! Unfortunatly we didn't try the sunday roast but we were very impressed by our pork choice, rate for food 10 out of 10! Definately will be coming back!
Anna02 - 22 Sep 2011 15:46
Popped into the Fox and Hounds for a spot of Sunday lunch and was very impressed.
We were served by a very friendly young lady who made some great recommendations from the menu, we opted for the chorizo board to share to start which was delicious and ample for the two of us, then we went for the beef roast dinner which had the biggest yorkshire pudding I've ever seen! The vegetables were exquisite no soggy old broccoli here...... and we washed it down with a bottle of red which the waitress suggested to us, lovely.
We relaxed in the bar area after the meal with a coffee and even stayed a while to listen to the live music they had on, which apparently is every Sunday night. We will definitely be back!

I go out to eat a lot in local pubs and restaurants and have never posted a comment before , but I believe that these girls deserve all the praise they can get!
There is a really nice atmosphere in this small friendly pub in Walton on the hill. The food is all home cooked to order , the menu is varied with enough for every one to have a good choice, I had grilled asparagus wrapped in parma ham with a deep fried poached egg, followed by a great home made steak and ale pie. My partner had a huge (definitely)home made strawberry Pavlova. The wine list is comprehensive without being overpriced or pretentious.
What is really nice is that the waitresses seem to really care about their customers, Shall certainly return soon!

This pub has recently reopened as a gastro pub and it shows! The food is very expensive - 14 for posh liver and bacon and there is no cheaper bar snacks. The bar itself is fairly spartan with bare wooden floors and basic dining room type chairs. Not the most comfortable pub and it doesn't encourage an extended session. Although it had 3 handpumps they only had Fullers London Pride and Greene King IPA on when I was there. Prices are competitive for the area.

Had lunch at this pub last week and the food was excellent.

Can confirm that this pub is now open again and has been since May 29th. I passed by this pub last night on the way to The Chequers to meet friends.
Do a Google search for the Fox and Hounds, Walton-on-the-hill and you'll see info. on the pubs website.
HHGTTG - 12 Jun 2009 20:47
Heard on the grapevine that this place was open again: Wrong! Not boarded up or anything but closed and dark.
Locals in the Chequers tell me the previous tenants simply "did a runner". They don't know of any plans to re-open it.
alan_From_SAWW - 12 Feb 2009 15:55
what a shame it just started getting back on its feet.and busy.i went there just b4 xmas and the food was very good hope it opens soon
toon_lass - 3 Feb 2009 02:54
This pub has now closed. I Passed by it last night on the way to the Chequers but did not really see it as it was blacked out.

Was informed by a nice old boy, in the bar of Chequers, that it had shut about two months ago - another one bites the dust!
HHGTTG - 30 Jan 2009 10:38
Last week we went back to The Fox & Hounds what a great experience this has all the makings of a great pub again.

Good Food
Great selection of real ales
Great service
Clean & safe environment

Welcome back to some familiar faces .

Normality has indeed returned. It needs now to be unrefurbished - unpaint the wood panelling, unsuspend the ceiling, unconceal the lighting, remove the canteen furniture - and it could be a great pub again.
nickdavies - 10 Feb 2008 19:06
The new owner, who apparently owned this pub over ten years ago, has made such a difference. It has been transformed back to it's former glory (i.e. a real pub) but has managed to retain a balance of charm and elegance. We have eaten in the restaurant and the food was fantastic, as was the service. Have also had bar food which was very good and very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit!
sony - 29 Jan 2008 13:05
The "new" owners have now left the building after 11 months.

I hope the people that take it over have the business sense to see why the previous owners failed in the 11 months they were there.

1. The decor. Far too modern and bland for a 300 year old pub.

2. Rude bar staff. Get rid of the miserable girls who dont say please or thank you and ignore customers while they flirt with the young men.

3. Its a pub, a village pub - it doesnt need chavs lording it up and being intimidating - keep them out like Nigel did. The expression "You are barred" is a great way to do this! ;)

Seriously though, this could get back to being a brilliant pub and one that could potentially be a gold mine..

How can the Chequers get it SO right and the Fox get it SO wrong?? Who knows and who cares? But I DO know whose cash register will be benefitting from the latest phase of refurbs in Walton and it ain't the Fox. The locals are obviously upset (which is always a danger as locals tend to be ones bread and butter in a small community) - let's hope the Fox follows the Chequers fine example and restores the pub in keeping with this otherwise lovely, tranquil village.
Off_Road_Roger - 14 Aug 2007 12:30
This is not a pub anymore, this is a bland Bar/Restaurant, ok for Teddington High Street though! Please take it off BITE

I think some people need to get with the times, pubs are changing into the modern times now. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this pub the food is very good and the atmosphere is relaxed and better than most pubs in the area.
anonymous - 19 Jul 2007 16:53
having been to the pub on a number of occasions and having read the reviews on this site, i cant help feeling that there are a lot of bitter people. i enjoyed the atmosphere here the food was fantasitc, clearly freshly prepared and very tasty indeed at good prices, which is always important. obviously the change to the pub has struck a chord with some people, but times are changing and pubs do need to adapt to this which i think the pub has done well. i will be recommending this pub to my friends.
tadworth121 - 7 Jun 2007 16:24
Used to be a rough place but at least it had some atmosphere, now it is a dull souless place to spend an evening and way too contempary for a village like that.
anonymous - 6 Jun 2007 01:30
It seems to me that the majority of the villagers hate The "new" Fox and I hear so many people moan about how much it has ruined the local pub community BUT they still bloody drink there! Stop being moaners. Actions speak louder than words. IF YOU HATE IT STOP DRINKING THERE THEN!
anonymous - 12 May 2007 17:06
I visited The chequers which was completly packed so decided to try The Fox and Ive finally found a place that I can sit and have a quiet pint.
anonymous - 23 Mar 2007 18:02
Get security ASAP. Pub is starting to get quite chavvy. The late license is just making it a breeding ground for trouble.
anonymous - 5 Mar 2007 16:26
Ditto the last comment! Important news for real beer drinkers is that they've added Adnams to compliment the ubiquitous London Pride. At 3.7% it's a realistic 'session' bitter! The food is easily as good as any to be found locally and better than most restaurants, let alone pubs. Good luck and well done!
localpubcritic - 14 Feb 2007 16:50
The Fox has been transformed into a great bar and restaurant. Ok - admittedly it was rather a shock when you think back to what the Fox used to be like but once you get over it you actually realise this is just what the village needed. It is smart, trendy but still relaxed! I have had some really great nights there recently instead of just having a night down the pub. It is still a village pub but it has stepped into the 21st century. What is wrong with that?! I want to say good luck to the new owners and well done for being brave enough to make the change. Mx
anonymous - 14 Feb 2007 16:32
visited the pub recently after the refurb, must say it is an enjoyable place to be on a friday evening, when i visited. the staff friendly, and dare i say attractive, the food delicious and the late licence well recieved. NO being thrown out at 11 or 12 abruptly{take note other pubs in village}, good crowd and music to cater for most people. best of all no smoking!!!!!fresh air in a pub at last. the beer was good {london pride still holding form} will definitely be back
thelun - 13 Feb 2007 15:09
Have never visited this pub since the recent overall so can't comment on what it was like before but I did find the place very acceptable, the London Pride was excellant and well looked after, the food was just as good if not better. Staff appeared friendly enough and best of all it's a totally non smoking pub!

Can agree that this is more of a restuarant with beer rather than a pub with food but at least it is a change from the other pubs in the area and it does increase the choice to the customer.

The decor is a bit shinning new but that will wear down with time, which is also what is needed (time) to see if the new owners have got a good thing going by offering something a bit different in the area.
Strider - 11 Jan 2007 14:47
This nice old pub has been turned into a trendy wine bar. Went there at last weekend with a bunch of ramblers: we were like fish-out-of-water. London pride still good though and food was cheap and excellent. But not a place for me anymore. Shame.
alan_From_SAWW - 9 Jan 2007 22:38
This is no longer a pub, it is now a Bar/Restaurant. The old Fox and Hounds is no more !! Yuck
mhartes - 9 Jan 2007 08:04
Crikey, I couldn't believe what they've done with a hitherto decent 'pub' pub. It's now horrendous - ersatz 'cool' winebar effect (the paintwork's poor, trendy sofas loosing space the place didn't have in the first place), real fire gone, large screen TV's, trendy continental lager at inflated price; I could go on but I'm too depressed.
nghewett - 7 Jan 2007 20:43
I ate here a week ago, the food was made to order, fresh and the taste excellent. The menu varied and covered all aspects of i think anyones individual palets. From Confit of Duck to start through a variety of meat mains and a truly mouth watering pudding selection made my meal choice most difficult. the Wine list again covered all budgets and tastes and i was glad to see London pride on tap along side a good selection of more light and modern lagers. I agree totally htis is not a country pub anymore and i dont think its meant to be, Morgan the chef seems to know food and i think this will help establish the business and i hope make it grow. All i can say to finish is try before you judge and i think you will be very suprised, it is very modern and has changed from the country smoke filled style and has movedd away from deep fried food towards freshly prepared, cooked to order top quality food. GOOD LUCK AND I WILL BACK.
gibsonjules - 30 Dec 2006 16:31
The new owners have ripped out the heart and soul of this traditional village local and replaced it with a bland "attempt" at a trendy wine bar.

It is vastly overpriced, boring and not in keeping with the other village pubs. Its late license will undoubtedly create problems with noise and violence and upset the locals. I'm not sure who their target market is, but I fear the lack of research and pub experience will be their downfall.

It's a shame because it used to be a lovely boozer with so much character and now is like every other bar out there, albeit in London, not in WOTH!!
anonymous - 15 Dec 2006 16:00
The place isn't the same without the brown haired girl who now works at the Chequers. Good food little over priced, BEST beer in the village by far. Will be good when the new people eventually get there and give it some new life.

anonymous - 8 Sep 2006 11:45
Landlord Nigel has transformed the flagging fortunes of the Fox. Bitter (Pride, Youngs O) superbly kept. Lively village atmosphere.

Food has a growing reputation, restaurant (non-smoking) is frequently busy (smokers may dine in the bar).
brownbear - 19 Jun 2005 00:10
An absolute gem. This is a proper village pub with great staff and an atmosphere which fake pubs cannot simulate. Watch out the cheese and pickle sandwiches - all others will pale to mediocrity after you've had one here.
loz - 18 Feb 2005 14:08
Great Pub, Staff are Fantastic, food & Beer superb, Curry Nights, Music once a month with "Nitetrain"...who are brilliant. Proper landlord who knows his customers...always a friendly welcome....I love it!!!
