Tried to pop in here for a pint last Wednesday but it was closed. No opening hours were displayed so don't know if this is a regular thing or not?

Beautiful veranda, a suntrap and pleasant place to relax and drink on a sunny afternoon. The Harvey's on tap was well kept and is always a favourite of mine so I was happy. They could have done with a greater selection of real ales given the pubs oldey worldey, they should take a leaf out of the Georges book just up the street. There wasn't a lot of choice with their lagers, just bog standard uninspiring brands you see in every town centre pub.

The pub serves a lovely cold meat, cheese and seafood platter. A great place to sit and people watch in an idyllic part of the town, I had a really enjoyable afternoon here and the staff were friendly.

This is a very pleasant pub in which to sit inside or outside

Went there for lunch the other weekend. The meal they served was fabulous. The meat I believe was happy meat and there was lots of it and very good value.

It is quite a popular pub and it was a sudden sunny day in winter so it isn't surprising that they had run out of apple pie. All the other puddings looked wonderful.

The staff were welcoming and friendly. Definitely my favourite pub in Rye

Stopped here on a Saturday lunchtime in early October, found a table outside, good for people-watching and admiring an attractive part of Rye. The pub smelt a lot of cleaning products inside, but the beer tasted good - Harveys and "Long Man", both local brews. Not the best pub in Rye but not the worst.

Nice pint of Harveys and the wine was OK too. Had a couple of light bites and they were a good quality and value. Sat outside in the sun with the many tourists who were around. Looked OK inside too. The hot water in the gents was near boiling point so a bit of a shock!!

Not a bad little pub, great location but the beers nothing special. Seems to get the only chavs in town as regulars. Have been offered out for a fight twice when passing late evening. Quite odd for Rye.

spent a couple of days in rye during the scallop festival we went to the bell for lunch and had the best scallops ever. the menu was a good all rounder (tapas great had that too!!) my partner had a harveys very nice and wine was chilled and crisp. would go back to sit outside in the summer and watch the world go by.

As the menu in the Ship inn wasn't that appealing I wondered to the YE OLDE BELL INN.
A small place with only London Pride on draught.

As I was hungry I had a ham egg and chips which was very expensive at 8. Then again the ham was nice and didn't taste like the A*** or T**** cheap stuff.

Had a pint in here the other week while away in the picture post card town of Rye. I like seeing the real side of place when I go away and coming in here I felt I did. The young bar staff and punters looked bored but seemed happy enough chatting and were willing to service the customers when they came in. It might be a bit like a feel like the parents had gone away and left their son in charge but so what? After spending a few days in Rye you get the feeling that the people that live there deserve their own place. Gastro-pub-goers and those looking for quaint 16th century tavern experiences can try elsewhere.

This was once a good pub with a selection of ales, but on my last visits, theyd just had London Pride and Harveys. Dull. Another chap on Beer in the Evening described the place as having a feel like the parents had gone away and left their son in charge. I must agree with that sentiment. It did come over as something of a youth club.
We downed a pint of London Pride, which wasnt bad, but was the worst pint of a day spent in several pubs in the town.

There is a sign up outside this pub informing the readers that this is the oldest pub in Rye, which didnt surprise me. The owners/managers seem to have put a lot of effort into the pub which was the reason I was so surprised when I walked in at the lack of other customers. The reason soon became apparent as the barman was playing a loud game of darts with a mate of his and the dance music didnt really suit the surroundings. Fortunately after about 15 minutes this friend left and the pub actually became very enjoyable.

I was very happy to tuck into the well kept Pride, but I didnt try the Harveys as I was getting a bit sick of it as every pub seemed to sell it. There was also a selection of standard lagers available.

The pub had a feel like the parents had gone away and left their son in charge, but as I said, the general ambience of the pub vastly improved as the night went on it may have been the beer though.

Visited late afternoon & did not feel welcomed whereas local who came in later got a more effucive response from the staff.
Beer OK but limited range.

Fantastic place to enjoy a beer. Welcoming as ever. Keep on coming back...

strange, cliquey place, very seldom visited by me,although the beer patio facing onto the high street is not without charm, and a good place to quaff the sulphurous lager on offer.ffs

Good food, the place is clean, good selection of well-kept ales, always worth popping in when in Rye

lovely old 15th century pub and very quiet when we went in there I think everyone in the town was in the standard

Great potential not excercised. Needs gutting and starting again, preferably leaving a few of the benches out so that you can actually breathe in there when it's busy.

Pretty good beer quality, staff could do with an IQ injection though.

Lovely old building on a lovely old street, friendly bar staff and a dramatic Wisteria on the terrace at the front. This pub stands out because it was open at 5.30 when we arrived, having cycled from Dover. The front yard is great place to look after your cycle whilst enjoying a pint. I was so knackered I had to have a lager top so can't comment on the ales this time!

Stopped in for a scoop last winter, comfortable old pub, well looked after beers and well looked after locals it seemed!
The bastaff were chatty and all in all a nice ambience to the place

Great little pub. 7/10
(wonderful restaurant next door too)

Must disagree with Stuarts comments, with the exception of the veranda bit.

Let down by the quality of the ale, although the lager was alright. Somewhat of a dingey dwelling due to too many tables - it's only a small bar. Very overcrowded when busy.

Same size as the Standard but just as lively. Can't fault the ale or the service.
Nice little veranda on the mint for summer drinking.
