Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, certainly not a Walkabout clone full of wanken drunkers. Even has cask ale which was palatable (I had Purity Ubu). Also has a huge area outside and pub quizzes on a Sunday.

Looking for somewhere with deafeningly loud music, cheap, piss-poor lager and packed to the rafters with drunk students? Go to the Gunnies. In the afternoon and early evening, it's not bad and there's a good-sized beer garden. Otherwise, avoid.

An awful Scream pub. Me and a few 30 and 40 something mates went in here on a crawl of Selly Oak. We could have been the fathers to any of the other clientele. Guiness was ok, from memory.

Fully agree with previous poster. Visited while waiting to pick a friend from the nearby Hospital. I was the oldest person in the bar by 30 yrs. No beer on only lager and that was expensive for the area. Music to loud for BOFs.
I dont wish to knock it because this venue is aimed at and used by young students. It is their place and I admit that for time it takes to drink a pint of lager I was out of my element.

Ps..Did not try the flavour enhancing trick with the ketchup.

A good pub if your a student but, if your not and your older than 25 its not the sort of place you want to be in for too long. The lager in there only has taste if you stick Ketchup in it.

the glass collecting manager mug is such a div I witnessed him in a fight in a pub that i will not disclose and the lad he was fighting is now bared from the barrels. how childish of this member of staff. stay away from this poorly staffed pub.

A great big nothing of a pub, one of the very worst of the "Scream" pubs. But then what would you seriously expect of a "student" pub painted yellow?
Shame on me for going in!
robinbrum - 4 Jun 2008 14:20
The gunnies is discriminative against foreigners. It refused my ID card claiming they had a new policy against foreign ID's. This was not further explained to me except that I would only be granted entry with a UK drivers liscence or an open passport. If I can get through an airport and airport security with my ID card, why not an ordinary pub?? Ridiculous!!!

Got a lot better since my last visit home.Full of fit student ladies so the scenery is ok.
super - 30 Nov 2007 14:44
jaf2210 - stated an opinion about a particular pub, not the area (which I have lived in for 25+ years). Insults are not what this board is about. I would take it that you are a student?

CRAP BEER AND OVERPRICED WITHOUT YELLOW CARD.

Is great for watching football. Watched Liverpool win the Champions League in 2005 and watched England v Sweden and Ecuador at the world cup. Top atmospshere with singing and no trouble. During the Ecuador game they had outside bar serving bottled beers and a BBQ.

When i have been here on the evening i dont tend to enjoy this place. Cant explain apart from the before mentioned poor lager, which gives stomach cramps easily.

Reccomended for Sport but try the Goose at the OVT for nice beer at cheap prices.

If your not a student, seriously .... don't bother. For students though, it remains a top place to meet up with mates and bump into someone you haven't seen for a while. Often gets very busy in the evenings, but thats not a problem as whoever goes there is not there for a quiet pint: Expect tanked up student having a good time before moving on into town.

In the daytime it is a quiet affair but retains a good atmosphere with comfortable seating, pool tables, beer garden and screened jukebox.

It should be known that the beer is good value, but is of a piss-poor quality with not a decent ale in sight. Pub grub does the business at a decent enough price.

eh khippy, how dumb are you

big pub, average prices in a mass populated student area next to a uni, of course it'll be full of students...! Are you thick or something..
jaf2210 - 9 Oct 2006 03:51
Full of student prats, and 16-21 locals, with crap beer.
khippy - 18 Sep 2006 12:22
A Replica of the bristol pear but on a larger scale. I prefer this pub to the pear as it has a beer garden, more room inside, and more staff. I feel that the prices are relatively high and i would not bother with the food as it would probably be the same as rubbish served at the pear but this pub is ok to spend a evening in now and again.
Davebcfc - 18 Jul 2006 17:36
Good Pub generally, but took almost 20mins to get served during the England Sweden match - get more staff!!!
jonboy_51 - 22 Jun 2006 09:53
Ehh? Dont listen to the others above, This Pub is so Greatttt!! Fit Birds, Cheap ass Drinks, especially on a Monday night. And awesome Tunes!!!!!!! Pooolllll also, O yeah. Watchin World Cup there. C'MON!
absinth - 5 Jun 2006 18:36
By far the best student pub in sellyoak! A bit on the expensive side and getting more expensive year by year. However Monday nights are brilliant with a resident D.J and a pint. Great music plenty of seating, and pool. If you dont like students this isn the place for you. Service is friendly and good but can be a bit slow on busy nights.
anonymous - 9 Mar 2006 13:52
This is your typical student pub. Good tunes, good vibes. Can get very crowded at peak student times which can get quite annoying as it can take a long time to get a drink.

The beer garden is huge and great in the summer as the atmosphere is always pretty good.

As far as prices go I don't think it is too expensive. I would say it is average, around 1.70 for a pint of standard lager, with yellow card, about 1.90 without. Obviously the people posting here are not from a big town!

I'd recommend going in early evening before the crowds get in.
WilkoUK - 28 Sep 2005 03:43
I find the concept of these scream pubs objectionable; if you have a stupid yello card (which you have paid for) you are charged a high price for the drinks, however, without a card (like me) you are charged an even higher price for the drinks!

Manages to survive purley on its location to the university and lazy students who can't be bother to walk to find a decent pub/pint. When no students are around atmosphere is OK.
pwakeley - 9 Sep 2005 11:00
Very expensive for a student pub, service average at best. Typical of the 'Scream' chain I suppose.
pablos13 - 27 Aug 2005 14:11
A pub close to my place of work, and not really of note for much else. One of the major student pubs, it can be very unpleasant and unbearably busy at the wrong times. But out of term time and in the summer, it can be quite reasonable to sit outside, skiving an afternoon off enjoying a pitcher of Grolsch with friends.
Muzthing - 5 Aug 2005 15:56
Expensive beer, service is second to many
anonymous - 23 Jun 2005 16:29
Good pub, has a nice atmosphere, good beer garden. The only down side is that its getting more expensive year on year...
super - 13 Jun 2005 17:35
truely great pub! relaxed atmosphere, great offers and somewhere you can really call a home from home! my favourite pub in Birmingham and somewhere i recommend you all try!!!
Matt - 29 Sep 2004 00:59
Good for the footie or sport if you get in early, reasaonable seating, good offers on jugs and full of students so lots to look at ;-)
Chris - 22 Sep 2004 15:03
Good atmosphere, can get very busy, especially on footie nights. Plenty of TV's, comfy sofa's and a few pool tables, as well as the "Scream Burger" - a must-have!! Best to go on nights with deals on drinks, such as monday, eg. 1 a drink.
Chris - 16 Jun 2004 18:22
A typical Scream pub, nearest one of the chain near Brum uni. Quiet expensive except the special offers. Good jukebox though
