user reviews of the City Arms, Coventry

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The City Arms is a large Wetherspoons in a prominent position on a busy roundabout. Unlike most branches of Wetherspoons, it looks it was already a pub before they took it over. It even has its own small car park at the front. But it is pay and display and you'll be lucky to get a space. Luckily we got served before quite a few others arrived at the bar. So service was quick. Ales were Sadlers Mud City Stout, Byatts Blackfriars Porter, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharps Doom Bar, Quantock Plastered Pheasant, Loddon Hullabaloo, Marstons Old Empire, Jennings Sneck Lifter & Grainstore Rutland Beast. Cider was Black Dragon. The pub has a few little nooks and crannies, giving it a little more character than most. Better than average.

Large pub serves the same range of food that I have not eat for years, beer excellent and cheap. Beer kept lovely and most guest beers less than two pounds.

Large and clean Wetherspoons in a leafy area of Coventry directly opposite a Methodist church and who knows how well that would go down?
Several ales on pump as well as a couple of ciderse.

One of the better JDW houses in Coventry. Nice suntrap beer garden out back.

Went here last night for some beers with friends. Excellent ales and the cider festival was great too. Good atmos for a spoons on a Saturday evening. Went back for lunch this afternoon. Big mistake - food was utterly horrendous even by spoons standards. My mixed grill tasted like the meat had been cooking for a month. Great place for drinks but give the food a miss!

Ever popular out-of-town hostelry, currently selling cheaper than average ale as a wetherspoons outlet. Clientele is an eclectic mix of old school beer drinkers and partying townies. A stop-off for many people seeking late-nite drinking in nearby traditional pubs and clubs, as well as those warming up for the popular bar-club culture of the emerging earlsdon nitelife scene.

Badly run .Regularly runs out of guest beers, staff cannot be bothered to put new beers on.Bar covered in beer and tables left uncleaned for hours.

Poor example of a JDW. Family area grubby and uncleaned tables. Upstairs toilets filthy. The main bar area seemed odd as there were not many tables, and gave the suggestion it was a prime city centre get sloshed quick stop off for the local boozers.

Good selection of beer, usually well kept and well priced. The food is basic, but reasonably priced and its OK. But if you go here in the evening you will often find a lengthy queue waiting to be served. Its very annoying. And this pub does attract more than its fair share of idiots game for a fight. Visit in the daytime.

DONT be put off by cardinals comments. This Is a Wetherspoons but they have a great range of real ales
which are usually well kept and the price is right!
It can be a bit raucous at weekends but there are plenty of down to earth regulars who come here to enjoy their ale and wont hassle you!

This place is pretty sound during the day especially if you sit outside and can stand the company of winos but when the sun goes down on Coventry a fair few scumbags creep out of the woodwork and turn up here for the cheap lager. Aggression is the name of the game around the bar area where 'geezers' will deliberately go out of their way to knock into you, hoping to get a reaction (Disclaimer - This pent up rage may be caused by the lack of bar staff). If you can avoid a melee then you could end have a good time here and when they chuck you out your can do a curry run up the hill.

Impressed with the choice at this Wetherspoons, and chose one of the 3 Rugby beers available. Staff efficiant and friendly. Pleasant outside seating area in warm weather.

Not the best pub in town by any means. It's a typical JDW establishment which can get very crowded at weekends because of its low prices. The beer is good if you can actually get served. Food is typical JDW also with a slooooow service but worth the wait in the end.

Very busy at weekends.
After a period of mediocrity, the place is alive again.
Could do with more staff on the busy nights, but this was always a problem even when the place was owned by Beefeater

Terrible queues at the bar, always understaffed.

Bar invariably swimming with slops.

Only plus point Wetherspoon's prices

Returned to Earlsdon this christmas for the first time in a while, to visit family (have been away from the 'village'for five years).
Decided to check out the old stomping ground; have to say, not bad, but not quite the same as it was when it was a Beefeater. Certainly no character to the place, but maybe it's me longing for the days when Gareth was the manager, when the two lovely Louises worked behind the bar (one of whom became a girlfriend for a while).
Then again, no Nick (depressing sad bastard) or Brenda ('old' slapper / tart).
On a serious note, beer was good as was the service. Various crowd of people both young and older. A good pub with a lot of potential

This pub has much improved since my last visit. My colleague says it has a new manager. A better atmosphere and feel. A full range of ales on tonight - well worth sampling !

Always understaffed. A poor Wetherspoons. Make of that what you will...

Good value priced menu and beer. It seemed to be very busy during visit.

i think the city arms is a good place to chill and chat with friends. I also think the foods of great quality and the beer is very cheap. i would strongly recommend this pub.

Probably the worst Wetherspoons I have visited - and normally I am a fan of theirs.

Poor layout - with boncers to get past, then a smelly smoking area directly inside the door.
Poor quality food.

Very poor counter staff - rude, unwilling to change beers / gas when they run out, badly trained on tills. Expect customers to queue at the tills - will not take orders from people standing along the bar from the tills.

Wetherspoons typical pub. Cheap Beer . Busy, mixed crowd. Many different guest beers but sometimes they are not on tap due to cleaning pipes!!
