user reviews of the Reflex, Watford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I ventured with some trepidation into Reflex, which is an adjunct of Molloy's next door, and was pleasantly surprised to find a delightfully retro 80's disco-type bar. The bar staff and the bouncers were friendly, and the prices weren't bad either. A pint of lager and a large vodka with cranberry was around £8.50. Entry was free between 22.00 and 22.30. Quite empty when we were there, but being on the elderly side we had to get home for our Horlicks before the crowds built up. No real ale I'm afraid, but what do you expect in an 80's bar?

Avoid this place!!

Went there for a 32nd birthday with my wife.
The bouncers are heavy handed thugs!
Got told to leave the club by some stocky 4 foot bald headed bouncer for no reason, when i asked him for what reason i was being asked to leave the club, he grabed hold of my arm and put it up my back, the next thing 2 other bouncers joined in and put my head between my legs and threw me out. (totally unnecessary force used, I now have bruises up my arm)

The rest of the time the bouncers were perving at all the girls!

Complained to the coppers outside and they wasnt interested.
Called the manager of the club he wasnt bothered either.

The place is also well over crowded, cant move in there! dont think they have heard of health and safty!!

My view dont bother with this place there are plenty of better bars in watford.

A shocking place. If there was any more cheese it would be in France. Still after a few beers its a good laugh!
anonymous - 18 Sep 2007 13:28
I love this bar! Although it might be a bit of a guilty pleasure... it's such a refreshing change from the other bars in the high street. Good mix of people, never had problems with the staff, great music, reasonably priced drinks and a revolving dancefloor - what more could you ask for really?! Glad to see that the opening hours have been extended too; I work in a pub just outside of the centre of town and it's nice to have the option of going there now once I've finished work at midnight.

Although I agree about the floors... very slippery. I've just recovered from a broken leg and I went in there a couple of times on crutches and I was very close to falling onto my arse at several points, I must admit!

Cheers Andy, appreciate the plug. Nat says hi...still talks about the good old days of the music room!
thelandlord - 8 Dec 2006 14:02
Even though I don't DJ at this bar any more, (after working there for 6 years every friday night, yes from day 1 off the music room opening too) I can still say that I enjoy this place. The staff are so friendly and I still recommend that people should go here.

Landlord Matt, keep up the good work and say hi to Nat for me.

Andy

Last three comments: Glad you love the doorman and have a great time. JerryTom you are right my Friday night DJ, Matt did meet his girlfriend through ebay or something like that! The place does get hot especially when there are 380 packed inside the club. One of the reason's for this is the ac has been running at half mast for the last few weeks. It has been fixed so there should be one hell of an improvement. If it gets too hot inside just come outside and let me or the doorman know and you can come back in when you have cooled off. I have some pretty outstanding bar staff especially the two in the centre of the bar...they are speed merchants!. In terms of the toilets, they are a nightmare but unfortunately it is the reality of having a packed club and you do get plenty of people dumping their drinks all over the place. We are doing our best to sort out the problems. That aside glad you like the place!
thelandlord - 25 Oct 2006 23:15
Why's it so hot in there? And why is the floor so wet? Not a bad little bar... good music, friendly staff and a good atmosphere.
anonymous - 23 Oct 2006 19:45
Saturday DJ is fantastic. Toilets are disgracefull and need a good clean and some air freshner!!! Service at the bar is outstanding. Nice place just sort the toilets out!!!!!!
anonymous - 28 Aug 2006 21:28
I love Reflex, Watford. It's definately the only place to party in town. It's great fun. I even booked my best friends hen party here last weekend, and she has a fantastic night. They reserved an area for us and gave us free champagne and goodies - the madonna boobs were my favourite!!! We spent most of the night on the revolving dancefloor!! The staff are really friendly an helpful and there is never any trouble and it's not full of male idiots. The cocktails are good too. You should definately spend your weekend here - although don't come in until after 10pm when the party gets started. see you there!!
dorothyredshoes - 2 Aug 2006 23:59
I adore this bar.

Best place to drag the girls out on a fun night out... totally different from the rest of the "same old same old" in Watford!

Revolving dance floor... what more can I say...
jonsey - 31 Jul 2006 00:05
This is by far the best place to party in watford. The staff and doorman are great. They are always friendly. It's a really safe place to be, unlike other venues in the town. I have had many a great night here. Me and my mates usually dress up in the stuff they sell - it really adds to enjoyment of the night. It's fantastic and would recommend it to anyone.

P.S: Boots - what they hell are you talking about. You obviously don't belong in a classy place like Reflex, Watford.
flipflips - 28 Jul 2006 14:15
Slow service. I was standing at the bar for ages, the staff had noticed; yet served other people who who'd just come to the bar before me. Looks a bit grubby in places and the drinks are pretty expensive.
smashingpumpkin - 15 Jul 2006 19:16
Boots, We are an 80's bar so we play 80's music but we are not able to cater for everyone's taste..we do not have any King to play. The DJ has to play the music to appeal to the masses. If he plays music for one person then the outlet will empty and I am not going to let that happen. We also have Human League I hasten to add. If you dress up as a builder from the Village of course you will get in, but if you rock up from a buiding site then no chance.

Trainers/Baseball shoes are acceptable but baseball caps/sports wear/flip-flops are not.
The rules of the door are not made up on the spot. The doorman simply follow what I order. A dress code is what every single club insists on. It has nothing to do with levels of trouble, its just what i expect in my club

I can't comment on your situation as I wasn't there. But if the we refuse entry that is my right as a DPS to do.If someone then kicks up a stink and goes off on one then we will pubwatch them.

The bottom line is this if you come to the venue and honestly feel you have been treated unfairly then for the love of God ask to speak to me the manager. I have the power to over rule as opposed to slating to the venue on the internet for your knock you back. At least give us a chance to rectify the situation and then if you are not happy then fine FIRE AWAY!

My Reflex is a good night out and a fun one at that and I do hope you get to see that one day.
anonymous - 5 Jul 2006 19:00
Boots as I said early if you have a problem then call the outlet or speak to me on the door. I cannot rectify anything from a website.
anonymous - 4 Jul 2006 21:20
As for the music policy, I think not playing the Human League (let alone other 80s classics, eg King) in an 80s bar because , quote, 'It's a commercial night' says it all.
boots - 4 Jul 2006 15:04
Could you explain how the 'safety' of your venue might possibly be compromised by allowing somebody in wearing baseball boots? Is somebody wearing a country & western jacket more likely to kick someone's head in than a beered up fool in a Ben Sherman shirt and 'normal' shoes?.

"If you turn up looking like you have just walked off a building site then yes my doorman will knock you back." Does that mean that you wouldn't let the builder from the Village People in?

The door staff DO make up the rules on the spot - otherwise they wouldn't turn one man away when they've let people in wearing the same stuff, and how come the 'no leisure footwear' rule doesn't apply to women? If men have to wear 'normal' shoes, then women shouldn't be allowed in wearing ballet pumps as these are clearly 'leisure footwear'?

I fail to see how having a dress code in any way contributes positively to any venue - it has nothing to do with 'safety' and everything to do with the fact that you want your venue to somehow convey an aura of class despite being in Watford High Street and staffed by morons who couldn't get into the police force. Compare with reflex in the City of London where they encourage dressing up, don't have a problem with people's footwear despite being in a far more upmarket and classier location, and the doorstaff are actually polite and friendly, even offering umbrellas to people in the queue - the correct way to operate!

boots - 4 Jul 2006 14:54
i used to work here, and i've been reading the reviews and i can't believe whats being said about the place. First of the staff as i well know are only rude when they have to be...i know that some of reflexs customers can be complete d!ckheads so if they are given abuse you'll get it back so live with it. As for the doorman, they are the best doorman in Watford. All the staff know that they are in good hands with those doorman, they take no cr@p so if you don't wanna get on the wrong side of them eerrr don't p!ss them off..as for them being sarcastic it's called having a sense of humour!!
anonymous - 10 Jun 2006 21:59
Last Post,If you have an issue then my advice is to contact me. I cannot rectify a situation through a website. As for the staff I expect them to be polite but on the other hand I don't expect them to put up with abuse. As for the the WKD Blue we have a variety of promos that run over the 5 days we are open even weekends. Ask the staff what is on offer, they will tell ya , look on the tv's for the promos as well as the tent cards on the bar and table. Glad the bouncers were polite, they are normally the first to get it in the neck! As for staying open till 2am , my wife would agree with you but I would have to disagree. That aside I hope your next visit is better...Trust me it is a good night out.
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 18:19
Drinks are highly overpriced. 3.15 for a blue wkd is a rip off. Staff were rude. doorstaff however are friendly. Shouldn't the manager employ polite staff who know about customer service. Mistake keeping it open until 2
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 14:59
Glad to see people are discussing my venue whether good or bad!!!!My doorman would never turn anyone away from the door for wearing 80's clothes, that would be nuts. However we do operate a dress code. If you turn up looking like you have just walked off a building site then yes my doorman will knock you back. We are one of the safest venues in watford and as a result we will knock people back that I do not want in my venue. That might seem harsh, but its my reputation. However if you really are unhappy then ask to speak to me as I am always on the door on Fridays/Saturdays. "Boots" if you really think you have been dealt with unfairly you are more that welcome to call the pub and give me grief, thats part of the job!
anonymous - 29 May 2006 19:19
Ooh, look. A Row! It seems the sarcastic, smug approach of the Reflex doorman has manifested itself onto the interweb. This is exactly the point 'boots' is making. You're all so high and mighty, with a tiny p*nis complex.
"You were not dressed appropriately"???!!! Its Reflex. Its 80s. Its a Dive. That's the USP! Blimey O Riley. I actually like Reflex. Its the doorman who are all cretins - to a man / woman.
anonymous - 26 May 2006 13:38
Where does it say he was refused entry?
Jamstern - 24 May 2006 21:03
So if you were refused entry at the door how do know that the drinks are overpriced, the DJ is useless and they don't requests and that they only have two compilation disk.???? I 'll tell ya why you were knocked back. You were not dressed appropriately. It may well cut the mustard to dress like a student on a student night but not on a weekend. We have to make an effort so why don't you!
Get over it, the doorman do not make up the rules as they go along. If you are dumb enough to sit there and argue and abuse the doorman then you only have yourself to blame if you are refused entry at other outlets. The place is a cracking night out I had a fantastic time especially the part where you got knocked back
anonymous - 24 May 2006 19:17
Extremely rude, aggressive and deliberately difficult 'doormen' who make up rules about entry on the spot. People getting turned away for trivial offences such as wearing 80s clothes to an 80s bar. Door staff seem to think they have the right to tell other places not to let you in if you dare to question their authority. If you do get inside the service is poor, drinks vastly overpriced and the DJs are useless - thy don't take requests, and appear to only own 2 80s compilation albums with only the most obvious tracks on them. RUBBISH.
boots - 18 May 2006 10:30
Now open until 2AM. Expect to pay 4 after 9:30PM. It doesnt really come alive until 11:30PM.
Great for mucking around, dressing up and learning to pole dance. Recommended.
hjr2000 - 6 Mar 2006 02:25
i have been here a few times....the staff are friendly (and the doorstaff) and i had a really good cheesy night out
babycakes - 13 Nov 2005 17:27
Its a briliant bar I have a great night every single visit. Yes there is a wait for drinks but that is everywhere you go to nowadays. If you are game for a laugh there are two poles for public use and a revolving dancefloor how much better can you get?!? DJ is great always plays the classics
Deana - 10 Oct 2005 10:57
Been on a few Friday nights and the DJ's are really good and always play requested stuff and play a good, varied set!

Bit too long a wait to get served at bar though...!
anonymous - 25 Apr 2005 09:06
If you want to wait half an hour to get a drink and listern to 80's music then this place is for you. Prob only for about an hour, there are some nicer places to go!
anonymous - 18 Apr 2005 17:09
Thought it was you. Don't worry mate, nothing meant by the last comment, but I'll sort you out with some Madonna boobs! (Don't say I dont give ya nothing!)
reflexdj - 5 Apr 2005 15:48
Ewww Andy im a guy!!!! It's Calum
killswitch - 5 Apr 2005 13:27
Well anonymous, you have to tell me who you are, then you might get something ;-)

Hey guys and girls, thanks for all the nice comments about the bar. I know what you mean about the sat night dj though. But hey, ask for something different, I'm always open to requests. I would rather play what you want to hear!

Andy
reflexdj - 31 Mar 2005 09:41
2 years of working there and i must admit its still a good night out, good music, good staff. Hey ya Andy, why couldnt ya chuck me some free bubbly for me b/day?
anonymous - 31 Mar 2005 01:51
Hey, my name is Andy and I DJ at this bar/club. You got to like 80's music really to have a good night. If you don't, then this isn't the bar for you. Lots of good tunes, and flashing lights. Most of all frienly staff and customers.
Come on in and pay us a visit.
reflexdj - 17 Mar 2005 11:46
Not really for me this place. It has never been busy when I have been in there, and has lacked atmosphere. The revolving dancefloor is a gimmick that quickly loses its appeal, and I dislike the music. The only reason I went it was due to a few friends persuading me. Then again maybe it's not aimed for my generation (20yr olds). Either way, I didn't like it.
Jamstern - 27 Dec 2004 13:02
Such a great place. I would love to work there! I am loving the moving dance floor and pole's. It's nice to have a place with different music to the other Clubs.
Zoe A - 10 Nov 2004 16:51
Wat a nite out!! Reflex is everything that the 80's was!! Cheesey, but cool!!1
Steve - 28 Jul 2004 14:50
In a word - GREAT
Gareth - 20 Jul 2004 16:48
Works as a venue for a late beer during the week. Went in there on a Tuesday night and had a decent pint of Guinn at 11.00 pm. Unusually for Watford it has Friendly door staff and bar staff.
El Diablo - [email protected] - 1 Apr 2004 16:35
Really not impressed with the DJ there on a Saturday night. Please can more people ask him for variety and he may get the message. Other than that, great place to go for a drink and a dance.
Lisa - 28 Mar 2004 23:43
went there last nite (sat) was excellent, was my first time but defdfinatly wont be my last! great lively crowd and brilliant friendly staff! cheap drinks, great music, o ploe and a revolving dance floor! what more can you want? brilliant 10/10
claire - 21 Mar 2004 16:23
The reflex is due to re-open on the 27th feb. After the fire which was started on the roof.Drinks are from mon-thurs= 2 for 2.
Roy Moore - 24 Feb 2004 15:26
not good and as cold in there as ever. revolving dancefloor is barely 2 metres in diameter and the novelty wears off very quickly. cheap drinks? compared to where?! can be dire getting served. how many weeks in a row can you hear "take on me" by a-ha without being sick of it? ps open again after fire?
steve - 23 Feb 2004 22:39
i go there nearly every fri or sat night its great very friendly enjoy it everytime!
hazel - 20 Jan 2004 12:33
A good night out. Friendly staff, 80s music, revolving dancefloor. Provided me & 5 friends (aged 25-27) with an excellent venue for our New Year celebrations.
Darren - 2 Jan 2004 13:13
Was o'neills music room but now has reopened as an 80s themed/cocktail bar.
Great laugh, brilliant staff, best atmosphere in the whole of Watford, no trouble at all. Cheap drinks, deffinetly worth a visit. I LOVE IT!!!
