More of a staging post for going up east with Daaaaaaaaaavid and Swiss Toni.

Last orders called at 10.45. Told to leave the pub at 1105 along with everyone else. Allowed to finish our drinks outside. TV turned off at 11 so unable to watch Olympic highlights.

Plus side speckled hen was good but this no way made up for a horror story.
realaleforever - 8 Aug 2012 10:43
I think it appeals as a sports bar but it does do half decent beer. It is a station pub so it can be overrun with people.

I've rated them 6. It would be a four but they earned two bonus points because they opened the day after the IRA blew up Bishopsgate even though the area was an utter shambles and they'd lost every pane of glass in their windows. Respect to the publican on that alone.

I passed a fairly agreeable couple of hours after work in here this week, talking cricket with a mate. Only tried the IPA, which was fine. A bit on the dark and dingy side if I'm totally honest, but otherwise a pretty good place for a couple of beers on a weekday evening.
mally_drinker - 20 Jan 2012 10:12
A friend and I chose to mingle amongst the Essex geezers in here to watch the Arsenal v West Ham match and the place was pretty packed. Still, service was good, allowing me to get a pint of Royal London with only the standard GK ales the alternative. Its main redeeming feature is its inventive layout, allowing different sports to be broadcast on the many plasma TV's. Probably does a roaring trade year-round due to its location next to the station and although I struggle to see when I'll be back, I reckon you could do alot worse.
ChrisP87 - 21 Mar 2010 08:14
Thoroughly awful youth club where students shout at Sky Sports

At first sight they seemed to have four ales on. Two went off as soon as I asked. 4/10 is generous.

MankyBadger - 25 Feb 2010 23:03
Popped into the City Bar for a half of Peroni and it was empty so after noticing the upstairs seating and additional limited standard draught I popped into the bar next door which was much more what Id expect from a pub. The Aussie barman was very friendly in this decent sized bar with a plasma at either end and the facility to show Sky Sports.

The standard Greene King Ales are available alongside a larger standard selection than the City Bar and again Peroni.

For a station pub this is a decent place, its just a shame about the pungent smell of Ketchup polluting the air.

I wouldnt be put out if I had to go here again.
Strongers - 29 Sep 2009 22:04
Cant really add a lot to the flavour of the previous reviews, in that this is a so so pub whose main redeeming feature is its close proximity to Liverpool St. Station. Standard GK Ales were on offer and as previous reviewers have commented plenty of plasma screens in both upstairs and downstairs bars and when it gets warm the large glass windows get fully opened, so the pub is fairly airy at ground level even when packed.
So in conclusion an OK pub for a pint close to Liverpool St. Station if you cant be arsed to walk a little bit further to find something better.

Very large, multiple rooms and bars. Always crowded on a Friday night. The dulcit sounds of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' and 'Mustang Sally' will drive you to buy drinks with a higher alcohol content and cotton wool to staunch the blood flowing freely from your ears. Last time I was there, a street person showed me bleeding wounds on his arms in an attempt to solicit money. He did not succeed. Wide range of drinks, can't recall what was on draught, if anything. Prices were as you would expect. The toilets were brightly lit china.
BitterShurn - 6 May 2009 15:27
They need to be more clear about which football they are showing in which bar. Last night they announced that the Man U game was moving from the upstairs to the downstarir bar at half time! It didn't, but the whole thing seems chaotic and the staff don't seem to know what's going on.
seagullfan - 25 Feb 2009 07:51
In there again last night. Beer's pricey, innit! Good view upstairs of the mighty Chelsea scraping a win against Cluj (who?), once they switched the telly to the right channel!
zabadak - 10 Dec 2008 13:19
Nipped in for a swift couple a couple of Sunday evenings back on way back from Norwich to London. Never really like the look of it from outside, having walked by on multiple occasions, but it was really good inside. Spanish football on TV and a mixed crowd in....not City types with it being a Sunday. Seemed to be a mixture of locals and people to/from the station. The staff were friendly and the Abbot Ale went down a treat.
banksy - 2 Dec 2008 01:20
Watched the footie in there last night. Choice of viewing: Arse downstairs, Man U upstairs. Good view, decent sound. Drinks a bit pricey, mind...!
zabadak - 6 Nov 2008 17:52
OK railway pub but nothing special - handy to while away a few minutes before the train. Staff friendly and beers OK if a tad expensive, even for London.
BobOs - 8 Oct 2008 16:02
I normally go into this pub after work. It's a nice pub with friendly staff but the drinks in my opinion are expensive. I also feel that this pub is not as popular as it was a year or 2 ago.
mitchell902106 - 31 Aug 2008 21:17
possibly the best station pub around. good layout and shows the sport. a benchmark for station pubs but not one i'd go out of my way for
westyw9 - 15 Apr 2008 14:09
i go to this pub before i go to see tottenham play. I do like it in their with it's freindly bar staff and a plesent business style atmosphere. I also have had food in their and it was to a very good level which also was priced well enough.
andyspurs - 19 Mar 2008 09:08
Appears to be a Greene King pub (Abbot, IPA, etc.) but I couldn't see a brewery sign. Nothing special, with it's most noteworthy feature being a bank of four slot machines along the end wall which blink and flash furiously in a rather annoying manner.
rpadam - 28 Feb 2008 00:02
So so pub. A generally friendly atmosphere amongst the mixture of city workers and tourists who frequent this place, which is unusual for pubs near London stations. Shame about some of the bar stuff though, who are not exactly the friendliest people on the face of this earth. One in particular deserves a prize for her attitude problem. I was in The Railway just before Christmas and she served me a pint of lager in a cracked glass. A piece of glass broke off and I nearly swallowed it. When I returned to the bar to ask for a replacement, the bar maid had vanished but her colleague begrudgingly gave me a replacement - no apology though and the suggestion that I was trying it on even though my lip was clearly bleeding.

I also stopped off there last night on the way home from work (didn't want to after the previous incident but my mate said he would be in there so I decided to give it another try). Unfortunately for me, the same barmaid served me. When I realised that I didn't have enough money on me, I apologised and rushed over to my friend who gave me the extra few pence I needed. I returned to the bar and once again apologised, only to met with a scowl and the words - you bring money when you come to the bar, alright? It's fantastic attitudes like this that result in customers seeking out other pubs, in my case the infinitely superior Lord Aberconway.
Wilko25 - 23 Jan 2008 12:03
The Railway Tavern is now showing true widescreen football again (after a technical fault meant dodgy pictures for months). Anyway, it's now fixed, so enjoy!
widescreen - 22 Dec 2007 12:05
Dont mind this pub. Service was fine and the pint of IPA I had was excellent. Toilets are reasonable clean which is tough when you are this close to the station. Not the best atmosphere but a good place to admire the ladies walking down Liverpool Street, especially when the big windows are open
TheHorsesMouth - 29 Aug 2007 13:00
Dont know where the racism stuff is coming from have been in this pub quite a few times over the last couple of months if it was true the place would be empty yes??. Nothing but a city workers crowd with the odd spattering of tourists Reviews from 6+ months are a bit outdated friendly staff quick service even at 5pm on a friday when it is rammed, lunch time food just perfect. if your near liverpool street try it, but it will b busy..
clydesdale21 - 30 Jul 2007 18:08
Not the best Pub i've been in, but had no real issues with service. Didnt see any trouble or anyone particulaly obnoxious. Fairly busy, only real comment I would make is that it seemed to lack atmoshphere. Nothing to stop me visiting again for a pint though.
Andy_Poole - 12 Mar 2007 16:22
This is the first stop for my and boyfriend when I get off the train at Liverpool Street. We always have a luverly time here and I cant wait for next Friday when we see each other again.
JuicyluvsSpunky - 27 Feb 2007 13:26
i read the guardian. i am 24 i . i had already paid 6.70 for 1 double vodka and coke, took 2 gulps and THEN asked for ID. i said i dont have any sorry. = LEAVE NOW OR ..... I can understand them asking befor and it was my fault for not having no ID. i would of just said no ok ill leave but after paying nearly 7 and then being asked for ID. I mean i hardley look young! and read the guardian it just gets me made. PLUS IT TOOK ME OVER 5 MINUTES TO GET SURVED. this pub should close
STYLECOUNCIL - 24 Feb 2007 20:41
Didn't know about the BNP thing but if true will never go in here again

Previously I'd thought the biggest drawback was the large clear glass windows overlooking Liverpool St where any passing colleague or member of senior management could see you as they wandered past
murgatroyd - 2 Feb 2007 09:33
A pub favoured by racists. Nuff said. I am not saying the management are racist - I have no reason to believe they are, other than that they took money from racists. 0/10
anonymous - 31 Jan 2007 21:27
Regardless of whether its a BNP hang out or not, its just a shit pub. So no moral dilemmas result from the Guardian article of yesterday. Hooray.

Amusingly the Wenlock Arms has been (still is?) a meet-up point for a charming organisation called "Class War".
anonymous - 23 Dec 2006 15:15
Yep, the worlds most boring newspaper, the Guardian, finally did something noteworthy by exposing this the Tavern as a regularly meeting spot not just for the cranally challenged members of the BNP but also as a venue that TAKES cash for their annual Xmas party. Presumably the pub provided complimentary crackers, party hats and burning crosses.

Obviously the owners dont mind what kind of people they take their cash from (tell me, will the paedophile union be their next week?). Treacherous, thick and pathetic - those are three words they can shove right up their backsides.

anonymous - 22 Dec 2006 16:05
A regular BNP meeting point
anonymous - 22 Dec 2006 13:27
Our first stop when my girlfriend comes to town.
Nice quiet place during the day, packed at night with an eclectic bunch. Decent surroundings, quick to be served. 8/10 for the pub. 10/10 for my g/f Juicy.
SpunkyLuvsJuicy - 21 Nov 2006 06:26
Quite a nice meeting point in the city on a Saturday night for a cheeky beer before moving on...
drunkmarv - 10 Nov 2006 11:04
A good pub with nice staff - you get served really quickly - which is surprising for how busy it is. The 3 different bars are great, very versatile so you can choose your mood or outside was great in the hot weather - Bar staff will even bring you drinks outside if you ask! Nice one.
anonymous - 3 Aug 2006 15:46
I gotta say, I would also prefer a 4:3 CRT to a 16:9 plasma showing distorted 4:3 pictures! :)
Well, I would hope that I'm not the only reviewer for any pub here on BITE, so the all-round picture will build up from other contributors. I personally think the TV IS an important aspect, so combined with other reviews of other aspects, it can only be a good thing.
I probably WOULD take a look at the composite issue, but you've got to remember that the cause could be anything from the Sky Box settings to the type of cable being used to whether the SCART socket is actually RGB enabled, etc... My current campaign has an easy diagnosis and fix, and the improvements are far more dramatic than fixing dot crawl, for example.
BTW, name me any pub using a dodgy HDTV/SCART combo on their primary screens so I can have a good old laugh at their stupidity. Probably best to email me rather than post on here.
widescreen - 15 Jul 2006 19:37
Indeed although the crux of going to a pub to watch the football is about the atmosphere, drink and quality of the establishment, rather than the display on the TV. Otherwise you may as well stay at home and watch it on your own widescreen TV as you'll get a better view.

I mean, would you rather go to a hellacious pub that smells, serves disgusting beer, has extremely rude staff and is full of people looking for a fight (not the Railway Tavern I hasten to add) just because it has an LCD or plasma TV with 16:9 display? My vote goes for a nice, friendly pub, with good ales and a good atmosphere with a CRT TV with a 4:3 display.

Each to his own, but I think there are better pub-related issues to campaign for rather than the widescreen TV ratios; what will you do once they all make the switch? It is also interesting that you dont mention other significant problems that affect pub TVs and are just as annoying, such as using composite rather than RGB display modes or plugging a HDTV into a digi-box using a bog-standard scart, causing pixilation and ghosting problems.

Anyway, I say we should be trying to get more people to drink real ale rather than p1ssy chemical lager, or stopping pubs from serving huge heads on the beer, or improving customer service.

AleKing - 13 Jul 2006 10:52
Can't quite agree with the comment of the last poster, only because people don't visit a restaurant to enjoy lampshades, but people do make a point of going to the pub to watch the footie. Take the comment as an endorsement of the pub - a place where people can enjoy the football fully... not with 1/3 of the picture missing.
widescreen - 12 Jul 2006 17:24
A couple of alright ales on in this place, although it is indistinguishable from most of the boozers around Liverpool Street. Still, it is better than the Pitcher & Piano.

As for the widescreen TVs, I am not over fussed as a pub is about booze, atmosphere and clients. I think going into a pub to review their TVs is the equivalent of going into a restaurant, disregarding the food, service and ambiance, and instead reviewing the lampshades.
AleKing - 12 Jul 2006 17:06
was here last week around lunchtime was packed , but got served reasonably quick and found a seat by the windows which was nice watching the talent walking past on lunch , the beer wasnt bad the staff seemed ok , not a bad pub , but wouldnt make this one of my regular haunts when in london
romfordir - 27 Mar 2006 16:53
Can never make my mind up about this place - sometimes the beer is fine, other times it's poor. Sometimes it's really smokey then the next time it's not..... good place to go for a quick one as i work nearby, but only ever used as a meeting place before going somewhere a bit better... nice big windows to watch all the mungos running for their train
adamsant - 12 Jan 2006 14:08
This is a great boozer first class service even when full as it is most of the day!. Well kept Greene King ales and a good wine list.
leggless - 10 Nov 2005 06:30
I visited the Railway tavern last week and was very impressed, the whole pub has been done up and the beer pumps and drip trays shone! service was friendly and quick (and offered a choice of 3 real ales)- even when the pub became busy and my food (pizza) arrived within 15 mins. Its a typical pub type pub downstairs although I had a walk around and the upstairs room has sofas and quieter music making it a lovely place to share a bottle of wine over dinner. I would recommend this place to anyone.
chewy - 17 Oct 2005 15:01
I've got to agree with PieFace, it's a pub well situated for the trains and as such isn't going to be one of the 'elite' drinking holes in the city..but the beers good, the barstaff friendly and the customers are an eclectic bunch. It's a good boozer for a few scoops before going home or wherever.
harlequin - 23 Sep 2005 02:28
There's a few harsh comments here. This place is never going to be a winner bearing in mind it's a railway pub but the pints of Abbots Ale I've just been drinking were nicely pulled and tasted spot on. Better to drink here during the daytime I suppose.
PieFace - 14 Jun 2005 14:44
They have a karaoke disco on Friday nights from 7:30pm
BackAche - 2 Jun 2005 15:32
I go there a bit, close to station & reasonable atmosphere. I went there to watch the footy this week, they had the Chelsea vs Arsenal game in the main bar & the Everton vs Man U game upstairs which I thought was a good idea.

BeerGuru - 22 Apr 2005 14:25
This place was a real dump 5 or 6 years ago, but its really gone down hill since Warburgs took over accross the road. Cold Pizza and warm beer. Real shortage of quality pubs in this area.
Selly - 7 Apr 2005 12:00
A nice big pub that is well worth investigating if you find yourself stuck waiting for a train in the area. Modern decor without trying too hard to be trendy. Flat screen TVs dotted liberally throughout make it a good place to watch the football and the background music is just that and not set at conversation killing levels. Not as pricey as some in the area, but still not exactly cheap. The mezzanine level is a great spot for a quiet chat or people watching and has very comfy sofas, however negotiating the narrow metal spiral staricase becomes dificult when laden with drinks from the bar downstairs and even more challenging once the drinks have been consumed! the Cigar dispensor machines are a nice touch. Has several hand pumps dispensing a wide variety of beers all called "London Pride" and all tasting suspiciously like "London Pride". Decent variety of lagers and spirits though. It was clean and service was quick and pleasant. Only real down side was the food. I was in there at about 6.30 and half the menu was unavailable at that point although they serve food virtually all night.
Mr.Monkfish - 20 Jan 2005 09:30
Bit tatty and could use with more effort on the clearing glasses/ashtrays front. Beer instantly forgettable. They do (or did) some manner of 'Pizza in the Pub' malarkey which was approximately acceptable. OK if you're meeting a mate who doesn't know the city as it's easy to find from the station - but once you've met up, take them somewhere better.
MrLash - 19 Jan 2005 12:13
Not very impressive service on the food front. Took ages to arrive (during lunch time hours), and then it was not what I had ordered with no offer of compensation. Poor basically.
Alexander - 5 Nov 2004 13:54
If you want football, or just a place to meet and have a few post-work beers, without being surrounded by tossers, this is your place.
matthew - 8 Sep 2004 14:59
Bit of a skanky place by city standards. Often full of builders - not too bad for a quick pint as the service is good. But due to the heacy smoke in the place you don't really want to stay inside - hence not stay!
Alex v T - 17 Aug 2004 15:28
BRING BACK THE CURRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DAVE - 10 Feb 2004 12:49
Fantastic busy pub showing all sporting events. A must if you find yourself in the area and even worth traveling for !!!!
Emmett - 28 Nov 2003 15:48
High quality lagers, friendly atmosphere, fast service, inexpensive good food, and very close to the station. If only you could get a seat!
Tom - 18 Nov 2003 10:10
Without a doubt the best bar in the city. Marvellous. And Scott the barman is a legend.
Pavement Lee - 14 Aug 2003 11:30
It's a dive....

Only go if you want to booze the night away and inhale marijuna smoke (allegedly). 2/10.
Darren in the City - 17 Jul 2003 14:08
standing room only...
