Currently closed.

St Austell brewery advertising for yet another publican to take over. This pub/hotel is in a wonderful part of the world with a great history behind it but seems to have had a new publican nearly every year.....some better than others.... in the past five years or so.
It seems a shame/rather odd that such a place seems not to be able to retain its licensee's.

We paid 3 visits to this pub over the last couple of days because it is the only proper pub in Lynton. Previous reviewers have described this place well; a mixture of locals and tourists in a shabby, convivial pub. The £3.30 Tribute had run out by our last visit today but the HSD was in fine form last night as we listened to a great female singer until midnight. Loved the wall murals, certainly more interesting than your usual nondescript prints.

Great little pub...friendly barman, friendly locals, cheap but good beer and a lovely warm atmosphere. Good music as well (apart from having to suffer a Queen album). Thoroughly recommend.

Went in here for the first time this week for lunch. We were greeted by a very smart man behind the bar. The interior is a little shabby and needs some updating, but it is clean. I ordered a pint of Proper Job, and as it was the first to be served that day he pulled off a fair quantity from the pipes before he filled my glass. The beer was excellent. We ordered lunch; a ham baguette and a cheese sandwich, expecting to be given just that, but they came on large plates with very generous helpings of both salad and fries. The baguette was 4.95 and the sandwich 4.50. My baguette contained plenty of very good home cooked ham. I noticed that the barman (who may be the licensee) greeted everyone who entered, the majority, like us, appeared to be visitors to the town. The toilets were spotlessly clean. There is a notice outside stating that Tristan and Naomi welcome you to the Crown. In view of an earlier review on this site referring to Martin & Bev it would appear that there has been a further change of licencees recently. Having been unhappy with previous visits to the well known pub down the hill at Lynmouth we will certainly be returning to the Crown very soon.

Definitely a locals pub, but we were made to feel very welcome here recently. We particularly liked the choosing and playing of LPs on the deck in the corner. Nicely looked after beers too.

Been in a couple of times not a bad place really. Always seems to be a locals place but i cannot find any other pubs in this town.
Is this the only one?

7/10

Not exactly what I had expected when walking through the door. Very much a public bar with odd little touches such as the murals of gypsy violinists on the wall. The clientelle seemed to be a reasonably harmonious mix of locals and tourists, the former stand at the bar and the latter sit around the tables.
Didn't try the food but the beer (it seems to be a St. Austell tied house) was reasonably well-kept.
Not in the top hundred or anything but generally an okay place to while away an hour.

nice pint pity about the pubs stinking dog!

I thought the pub had a quirky charm, it has paintings on all the walls which, from what I was told were done by a locally famous artist. It has a warm cosy feel and the staff were very polite and friendly. Everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves and the outdoor dining area was lovely and added a beautiful touch.
The food was great and my partner had a pint of Proper Job which he said was also lovely.
I really don't have a bad word to say as my stay was perfect and I will defiantly be returning next year

I visited this pub in during May half term and it was a great pub. The beer (St Austell) was well kept and the food was also very good.....we ate there twice but was touch and go both times as to whether we could get a table because it was so busy.

I revisited the pub at the end of July.....what a difference a couple of weeks makes. It was empty...... the beer was OK at best.....and the new publicans, (yes it would appear to have changed again), were well what shall we say....not the most welcoming. Barely got a smile out of the landlady when she served me and the landlord sat at the end of the bar holding court with a couple of locals and ignoring everyone else. Then for some bizarre reason he seemed it a good idea to put on some heavy metal music and let his children ride through the bar on their scooters.....most odd.

Left the pub shortly afterwards and visited the only other pub in Lynton which was packed......mainly with people who used to use the Crown I suspect

We are Martin and Bev and have just taken over The Crown at Lynton. We are now doing a Curry Night on a Thursday and a Quiz on a Sunday, with usually Live Music on a Saturday. We are Cask Marque approved.
Our New menu starts next week witha FREE salad bar. The Mayor of Lynton is coming next week.
We welcome customers old and new and want to give you fantastic customer service. Please tell us in person if we fall short of our aim.

Ate here recently, having been tempted by the vegetable and stilton crumble. The vegetables were frozen mixed veg, the crumble wasn't crumble but just wholemeal flour tipped on top then burnt under the grill and there was no evidence of any stilton whatsoever. Highly disappointing. The new owners or managers had just moved in and were busy setting up their new Sky subscription; if they've any sense they'll sort out the kitchen first. Beer was ok, but nothing special in quality or choice. Left feeling ripped off and wishing we hadn't bothered.

Boxing Day. Long walk Valley of the Rocks meant we had earned a pint and decent food. Immediately put off by loud, drunk intrusive (local?) man in the company of 3 or 4 others. Our half pints of Proper Job and TRibute were excellent....But due to the slightly theatening atmosphere...we made our excuses and left.

Discovered this pub while in Lynton over Easter and felt very welcome there.
Not the most exciting interior, but the food was excellent, and so was the service. Nice place!

This used to be the best pub in the town but has recently changed ownship. Unfortunately, the change is for the worse - the menu has been reduced and the quality of the food has declined. The beer is fine but aprt from that there is very little to recommend it. Great shame.

Agree with the others on this one. Probably the better pub in the village, unfortinately the other two are quite small and often empty.

Not very impressed with customer service, was told at 7.30pm you could order food right up until 8:45pm. So we sat down and took about 10 minutes choosing our order, when we returned to the bar we were told that were now too busy to take any orders for the rest of the evening. Tell us this now we've purchased a bottle of wine - and not even an apology!!

Agree with the others about the locals, they all know each other very well in the area and so talk as loud as you like about tourists if we were a different breed! So I guess they never use a bar/pub when they go on holiday then.

Definitely the best of the three pubs in the village centre and usually friendly to strangers. Good food and beer, though remember that this is North Devon and so service can be a little slow at times. Evenings can be lively with the right crowd:)

The Crown Hotel (appears also to be known as "Whip and Collar" Restaurant & Bar) - confusing to visitors! Nice location. Has a covered seating area outside big enough for about 4 tables. Inside is an old-style bar. Locals seemed well-behaved. There was a distinct lack of staff the afternoon I popped in (ie- no-one serving behind the bar.. a real problem if you're thirsty after a long hike..!) I did get my pint after a 5min wait, and then made it to a table outside just before a real down-pour!! Other patrons food did look and smell quite good though, so this may be worth sampling at some stage. Probably a good bar to frequent in the evening. TJ

Found this bar friendly and filled with a mix of both locals and visitors over Easter. The Exmoor Gold was fine but my mates starting on the St Austell quickly switched (more down to choice of brewery than quality of pint).
Food is served in the back room which was empty on our first visit (Thursday night), had a party of hens on Friday and was packed on Sunday (little other choice).
There is also a little used hotel style lounge and bar which was mostly empty.
Agree with RollerRuss that the Globe and Queens are far from inviting but found the Crown more worthwhile than the climb back up from Lynmouth
lout_from_the_lane - 26 Apr 2006 17:43
The food was reasonable. This is the good point. Unfortunately I experienced biased towards locals/residents when seating for the restaurant, rude service from the proprietors and staff, over bearing locals making it obvious it is a 'locals' pub, and not particularly well kept beer. Above all this was the refusal to allow us to order off their bar snacks menu (finishes at 5pm, we asked at 7.30), which is fair enough, only to then watch a local punter arrive and order off it under our very noses. If you are staying in Lynton, unlucky as the only other option is The Globe which didn't look too inviting from the outside, whilst The Queens was shut. I suggest getting down to Lynmouth, in particular The Village Inn.
RollerRuss - 6 Apr 2005 12:27
Certainly the best of the three pubs on Market Street. Good food, good drink, nice atmosphere. Get there early and behave yourself and you might just get to stay a bit late.
Good for: Getting drunk after a hard days walk across Exmoor.
