A great looking pub. I really enjoyed myself here. I was here so I did not go outside into the beer garden except to have a quick look. There were lots of solid-looking seats with real cushions.
Inside reminds me of Santa's grotto. Lots of nick-nacks, paintings, posters and up-lights. It gave the whole place a magickal look. I had a steak pie and veg and it was very good, and pretty reasonably priced. I drank the Hobgoblin Gold, but there was at least one more guest beer available.
I'd definitely make a detour to go back to this pub.

Picturesque pub restaurant set in the stunning old village.3 beers on,doombar, hobgoblins gold and butcombe bitter.tried the butcombe which was good.bit of a fishy smell as you drink with dinners.

This is not a pub for beer drinkers (meaning real ale). The food when we visited was pricey but excellent, so we definitely got what we paid for.

The service was dreadful. I ordered the drinks then my wife ordered the food, we both had the same experience. The tall brunette (female) serving, obviously thought that she was doing everyone a favour by being there. Smile, customer contact, service were not in her vocabulary.

The landlord spoiled our experience by thanking us for coming as we left. So there is hope. I rate this 10 for food and 1 for service.

This pub has gone really expensive (drink and food) and appears to be taking advantage of once being a really good pub. The ale was really cold too (same temperature as the lager). Agree also about the bar staff - one evening the 2 girls behind the bar seemed more interesting in texting friends than serving customers (I waited 2 minutes at an empty bar while they both texted friends, or maybe each other). Shame as it used to be a good pub.

Food is still good, but expensive.

Decent enough beer on offer but the bar staff need to serve people in the order they arrive at the bar not their friends and locals first!

Fairly expensive as well.

A very friendly and welcoming landlady but unfortunately supported by some of the most unpleasant staff I have ever encountered in a pub.

Oh, and take lots of money with you as it aint cheap.

Lovely, little pub - great interior and exterior. Although the white wine wasn't all that great, would definitely say this place is worth a visit when in Shanklin.

The price of food put us off from entering. A peek through the window showed Doombar and Theakstons XB on offer.

Recently paid first visit of the year. They've changed the real ales, now Hook Norton Best and Old Peculiar. Both in tip top condition and reasonably priced (even after this 'wonderful' goverment's budget rise). The food was as good as ever, and remains the best pub in Shanklin, it's only rival is the Fishermans Cottage on the front

Live music every single night, wonderful homemade food and a good, although expensive, selection at the bar. Great atmosphere, friendly place.

Ventnor Best Bitter OK. Too interested in food but a reasonable pub nonethless.

Nice little boozer with good food. Shame food not served all day, only up to 2.30pm during the day.

Best pub for food in Shanklin, and plentiful. Two real ales on offer, their own 'Village Idiot' brewed by the Ventnor Brewery, and Theakstons, on our last visit. Also has big eating area upstairs when no space in the main bar.

Good food, big portions, ale is good too (Ventnor brewery). Agree some of the staff can be a bit miserable, and at times start clearing up before last orders.

Good entertainment most week nights too. One of the better pubs in Shanklin.

Food not as good as it was last year. Some bar staff a bit miserable and inattentive but still really like it as it's lovely surroundings and a nice courtyard garden with a playhouse for the children (good entertainment some nights too.) Look forward to going back to the wonderful Isle of Wight!!
