user reviews of the Bellemoor, Southampton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The treacle pudding and custard is awesome. Worth coming here just for that.

I note that the pub normally does four cask ales, and has put on a few hundred different ones over the past couple of years. This is a pub that is worth coming back to.

Clean and pleasant family pub near Southampton Common. Relaxed atmosphere with music softly playing in the background. Staff friendly and helpful. Does a range of cask ales - the two on our visit were Ringwood Best Bitter and 49er. Four cheap Sunday roasts plus a veggie version which is a crispy bean burger plus veg and veggie gravy. It was edible and cheap. Pub is ok. I'd be happy to visit again. It's not a special pub, but if you're in the area and the Cowsherd is full, this is ok.

"food and drinks about three times the price"

Hyperbole Alert!

Somewhat disappointing pub which enjoys an enviable location next to the main entrance to Southampton Common. Lacks any real atmosphere or charm in my opinion. Similar decor to many Wetherspoons pubs but food and drinks about three times the price. Add to that the generally slow and often surly service and you end up with an experience you don't particularly wish to repeat. You feel it could do so much better.

Fairly anonymous pub on the interior and festooned with spy cameras to survey the various and plentiful carrels and other seating nooks 'n' crannies but otherwise not demonstrably a bad pub: prompt and not unfriendly lunchtime service, reasonably priced basic food (sandwiches, jacket potatoes and main meals), some decent guest draught beers as noted by other review below eg London Pride, toilets well kept. Handy location on the junction with the eponymous Bellemoor Road and opposite Southampton Common.

Main impression was that it's rather like an above-average Wetherspoons but forgot which brewery it is.

They seem to be trying and the standard is above average so overall, worth at least a 5/6, I think the current 4.1/10 rating is unrealistically negative...

have been to the quiz nights on tuesdays a few times now and the 'lady' who reads out the questions is a dork, she cannot string two words together and thinks she's great because she's got the answers in front of her when really she is thick as shit!! she gives answers to her favourite teams, meaning other teams have no chance of winning the quiz. She likes the sound of her own voice and is a complete moron!! the other chap who presents every now and then is much better, GIVE HER THE BOOT FOR GODS SAKE!!

I use this pub about 4 times a month. I go for the food as it is good value for money. Some staff could do with some 'customer service' training, as they are rather cold to customers. In my view, it is an OK place for a pint and a bite to eat.

As a family place to eat I wouldn't bother and I refuse to eat or drink here again. If you are on your own and a quick convenient pint is all you want then fine.
I was refused service just because I would not to let my 3 year old son out of my sight. The staff member in question was extremely rude, offered no alternative or help and constantly shouted "it's the law". This is the first time I have been discriminated against for being a single parent father.
I would strongly recommend The Cowherds on the other side of the common.

S-L-O-W service is right. That is, if you can get the staff's attention. They clearly aren't being paid for their productivity.

Recently moved to Southampton have been to this pub a few times now, found the food good value for money nothing special (kinda a quick bite if u can't be bothered to cook). London Pride, Becks on draft and a good chioce of wine reasonabley priced.

Next time I'll stick to lamb shank - ribeye steak doesn't do so well in the microwave.

I use to bring the missus here when I lived up the road. Yeah it's got pretty decor to please mormons, however I always thought the beer was way overpriced and the service was worse than Tim Henmans.

Painfully lethargic is right.Overheard in the Bellemoor:
Hello?.......Hello?.....Could someone top my guinness up please?.......Is someone there?.....Its been settling for half an hour i think its ready?....I quite wanted another before closing time...Excuse me....bugger it, i'll do it myself.

I'm a patient man but there are limits. They do a nice, unhurried pint of guinness.
Order all of your drinks for the evening the second you get someone's attention. They'll probably have given you some of them by the time you leave.

Not a bad pub apart from the above. If you're really, really old or are easily startled by sudden movement, this is the perfect pub for you.

Been using this place for about a year. I think I spent most of that time waiting for a drink. The staff in here are painfully lethargic. Beer's ok, food varies. Overview: "Intensely Moderate"

I havent been since the refit but have heard good things. The college kids are banned so should be alright for a quite drink.

Recently refurbished pub that hasn't lost its locals. Liz and her staf are very friendly. The beer is well kept and they have guest beers as well as a decent wine list. The new extension and decor divide the pub into three areas: a bit for standing round the games machines, general seating/eating area and a separate non-smoking area with comfy chairs. The food is good, if perhaps a little over-priced for the area.
